SSAM: A Haskell Parallel Programming STM Based Simple Actor Model

As computers with manycore architecture are being widely spread, parallel programming becomes a pending issue. While parallel programming has been a challenging issue, Haskell is known to be of the best available one. The immutability and declarative nature of Haskell suit well the need for parallelism. In our previous work, we implemented the SAM, a parallel programming model based on Haskell. In this paper, we propose the SSAM, an updated version of SAM, by solving the performance overhead of SAM socket. We discuss the architecture of SSAM and its major functions and show the 14% scalability upgrade in a performance test.

Recently, cloud computers are widely used due to the development of computing environment and network speed. Unikernel is considered to be an attractive operating system in the manycore environment that effectively provides cloud computers. HalVM is a unikernel coded in Haskell. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Haskell running in a unikernel, which has shown good parallel programming performance in a manycore environment. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Haskell running in a unikernel, while Haskell has shown good performance in a manycore environment. To do this, we select HaLVM as the target operating system and analyze the performance by testing various Haskell parallel programming models. Test result shows that HaLVM is scalable only on IVC. We also implement a library to make programming with IVC more convenient, and use this library to compare extensibility experiments. Our test shows HaLVM's scalability is 112.42% higher than Linux environment.

For several economical, financial and operational reasons, forecasting energy demand becomes a key instrument in energy system management. This paper develops a natural gas forecasting approach, which consists of two major phases: 1) it classifies the natural gas consumption daily pattern sequences into different groups with similar attributes. 2) the design and training of multiple autoregressive Gaussian Process models phase is carried out using the Algerian natural gas market data together with exogenous inputs consisting in weather (temperature) and calendar (day of the week, hour indicator) factors. The main novelty in this work consists of the investigation of multiple different clustering techniques for better analysis and clustering of natural gas consumption data. The impact of the obtained clusters, by each technique, is then summarized and evaluated with respect to the prediction accuracy.

There is a necessity to schedule the system and user processes by the operating system to getting maximum utilization of the CPU and obtaining high throughput. This paper presents a dynamic scheduling algorithm that make use of genetic algorithm operations for scheduling multi non-preemptive task on uniprocessor system to get minimum average waiting time and average turnaround time. The algorithm dep.nd on construct fitness function that take in its consideration the dead time of process to avoid the starvation problem, in addition to obtaining maximum throughput. The results from proposed algorithm simulation by matlab (8.3) illustrates the successful of this method to obtain optimal result by giving the minimum average turnaround time for executing the given processes. © 2017 IEEE.

The demand on distribution network reconfiguration abilities is increasing. This paper proposes a Finite State Automaton model of a distribution network that deals with topologically safe reconfiguration. Autonomous operation of distribution networks can be designed, analysed and implemented in day-to-day operation with the aid of these automata: through supervisory control. Two approaches to supervisor design are proposed. One for the normal operating mode and the other for the contingency mode. Simple and comprehensive examples illustrate the approaches. © 2017 IEEE.

Wavelet transform based technique for text image localization

In this paper, a robust technique based on discrete wavelet transform, edge detection, and morphology operation for scene text detection is proposed. There are several stages in the proposed method. In the first stage, a single wavelet decomposition LH, HL and HH subbands are applied for detecting edges in original scene text image. The projection technique is applied in the second stage to preliminary detect text and non-text pixels. In third stage, 4-connected components are applied, and then area geometric feature is used as threshold to remove non-text region. At last stage, morphological operations are applied to connect isolated text components and to remove non-text regions. The proposed method is applied on a various images such as images of low contrast, complex background images and images of different fonts and size of text. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect regions of the text perfectly. © 2016 The Authors

SNOLA is a Thematic Network of Excellence recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness composed of the main Spanish researchers in the field of learning analytics. This network emerged in 2013 focusing mainly on the technology underlying learning analytics development, but also interested on the integration of other views and disciplines that give the network a wider scope. During these years, SNOLA has carry out numerous actions with the goal of promoting the collaboration on this field, the diffusion of knowledge and initiatives, the collection of resources and the provision of broad support. Remarkable examples of these efforts have been LASI Spain events, workshops at TEEM conferences or the numerous webinars. In this case, the EDUCON 2018 has given us the opportunity to organize this special session where 5 papers have been selected for presentation. © 2018 IEEE.

We propose a novel frequency control approach in between centralized and distributed architectures, that is a generalized continuous-time feedback control version of the dual decomposition optimization method. Specifically, a convex combination of the frequency measurements is centrally aggregated and followed by an integral control, which is broadcast as the control signal, and then by the optimal local allocations. We show that our controller comprises many previously proposed strategies for specific parameter sets. Under mild parametric assumptions, we prove local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop equilibria of the power system, which is modeled as a nonlinear, differential-algebraic, dynamical system that includes traditional generators, frequency-responsive as well as passive loads, where the sources are already equipped with primary droop control. Our feedback control is designed such that the closed-loop equilibria of the power system solve the optimal economic dispatch problem.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of different burnishing strategy on a C45 steel machining. Burnishing is a well-known, cold working surface improving technology, it is usually applied for cylindrical workpiece. In the reported research a novel developed magnetic assisted ball burnishing (MABB) tool was applied which was designed for MABB machining of flat and harmonic surfaces. To increase its efficiency, different types of machining strategies were applied. After the burnishing process the machined surfaces were measured by surface roughness tester to determine the most important Rsk and Rku tribological parameters. According to the results it can be stated that all different burnishing strategies have special application areas where they can be used efficiently (e.g. sliding surface, moulding tool and after- or pre-machining for ultra-precision machining).
