Community networks have emerged under the mottos of “break the strings that are limiting you”, “don't buy the network, be the network” or “a free net for everyone is possible”. Such networks create a measurable social impact as they provide to the community the right and opportunity of communication. As any other network that mixes wired and wireless links, the routing protocol must face several challenges that arise from the unreliable nature of the wireless medium. Link quality tracking helps the routing layer to select links that maximize the delivery rate and minimize traffic congestion. Moreover, link quality prediction has proved to be a technique that surpasses link quality tracking by foreseeing which links are more likely to change its quality. In this work, we focus on link quality prediction by means of a time series analysis. We apply this prediction technique in the routing layer of large-scale, distributed and decentralized networks. We demonstrate that this type of prediction achieves about a success probability of about 98% in both the short and long term.

Existing explainability approaches for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are mainly applied after training (post-hoc) which is generally unreliable. Ante-hoc explainers trained simultaneously with the CNN are more reliable. However, current ante-hoc explanation methods mainly generate inexplicit concept-based explanations tailored to specific tasks. To address these limitations, we propose a task-agnostic ante-hoc framework that can generate interpretation maps to visually explain any CNN. Our framework simultaneously trains the CNN and a weighting network - an explanation generation module. The generated maps are self-explanatory, eliminating the need for manual identification of concepts. We demonstrate that our method can interpret classification, facial landmark detection, and image captioning tasks. We show that our framework is explicit, faithful, and stable through experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first ante-hoc CNN explanation strategy that produces visual explanations generic to CNNs for different tasks.

A synchronous reference frame controller with a multi-resonant harmonic compensator for single-phase grid-connected inverters is proposed in this paper. The essence of the proposed control strategy is to use a synchronous reference frame PI controller (SRFPI) to regulate the output current with zero steady state error, together with a multi-resonant harmonic compensator to provide an efficient attenuation of the grid voltage background harmonic distortion, and an average power controller to regulate the active and reactive powers. A detailed design procedure for the proposed control strategy is presented based on a frequency response approach. Extensive simulations confirm the validity of the proposed strategy. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel method in the synchronous reference frame to extract the reference compensating current for single-phase shunt active power filters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated using a detailed mathematical analysis. The results confirm the excellent performance of the proposed strategy. Distributed control systems involve three main disciplines: control systems, real time systems, and communication systems. control systems, due their stringent timing constraints, demand real time computing technology. Distributed control systems need communication systems when distributing sensors, actuators, the control procedures and data messaging. In general, demands of distributed control systems and properties of real time scheduling algorithms differ, for example, for activation patterns of tasks. Robotics is a field which does not only become more and more important in industry and production but is becoming part of many peoples every day life and as such, the interaction between robots and humans is an essential field of research. In this work, we present a face - being an important part of a natural communication - and show that animated facial expressions can be used to express the robot's emotions. To do so, we developed a set of animated facial expressions to be shown on the screen of the MASHI robot, a telepresence robot with a wide-screen display mounted on top. A survey was conducted to evaluate the recognition value of the facial expressions as well as to evaluate whether displaying the full face or rather just the eye-region affects this recognition rate. The evaluation of this survey shows that most of our emotions are recognized better if a mouth is provided. Yet, the recognition rate is still acceptable without displaying the mouth. In summary, all emotions were well recognized and therefore, displaying these on robots like MASHI will contribute to a more natural human-robot interaction.

In general, characteristics of classical control theory and properties of real-time scheduling algorithms may cause unexpected control system responses in the implementation of real-time computer-controlled systems. Revising real-time scheduling properties, we analyse which are the main timing problems that current scheduling algorithms may introduce in the execution of control loops. Next, we categorise those timing problems, that is, jitters on task-instances executions, in a control context. Afterwards, we show, by simulations, different types of control system performance degradation that these jitters may cause. Finally, we propose possible solutions that solves this degradation, based on irregular sampling discrete-time system models with varying time delays.

In this paper, a novel wireless load-sharing controller for parallel connected UPS inverters is proposed. As opposed to the conventional droop method, the proposed method achieves stable steady-state frequency and amplitude. The paper explorers the output impedance of the UPS inverters, and an adaptive virtual output impedance is proposed in order to reduce its line impedance impact. Experimental results are presented from two 6 kVA UPS inverters controlled by TMS320LF2407A DSP boards, showing the feasibility of the proposed approach. © 2005 IEEE.

Teleoperation in harsh environments has to tackle the problem of working with images of poor quality, as the visual feedback means for the human operator. This paper describes a procedure for image augmentation, based on the models of the scene elements, which are built from the images acquired in a previous phase, before the execution of the task, when the visual environment conditions are still good enough.

Hypersurface, a software defined metasurface (SDM) paradigm constitutes a revolutionary technology aiming at offering programmatic control over all aspects of a propagating wave, altering its direction, power, polarization and phase. In the absence of line of sight (LOS) between a transmitter and a receiver, HSF can provide seamless connectivity via programmatic reflection. However, such an application requires fine tuning of the metasurface reconfiguration parameters, which may not be effective when done in an open loop fashion due to model uncertainties. In this work, we consider a feedback-based formulation of the problem, which involves maximization of the received power and propose the use of Extremum Seeking control (ESC) for the controller implementation due to fact that it is model-free and adheres to the maximization problem. Extensive simulations indicate that the proposed scheme is successful in guiding the impinging wave to the receiver within reasonable time even in the presence of time varying delays incurred by message propagation. In addition, a discrete time implementation is considered, investigating its limitations as we increase the sampling time while also characterizing the traffic within the controller network.
