A stable and reliable power distribution system is an inevitable pre-requisite for the technological and smarter power system. Furthermore, the traditional methodology for improving reliability of distribution system under smart grid environment will be unavailing. For this purposed, a novel approach is presented for multi objective placement and number of the Fault Indicator (Fl) in the smart distribution systems. The reliability index and investment cost are considered as multifarious objectives in the multi objective problem. Due to its good handling of non-convex and mixed integer problem, a Fuzzy Clustering-based Genetic Algorithm (FCGA) is utilized for optimization problem. The simulation is conducted on a 50 node real system to trace the capability of proposed algorithm.

Memory rehabilitation and training is an important activity for patients with Acquired Brain Damage, including Cerebral Vascular Accident (stroke) and Traumatic Brain Injury patients. Although many interactive web-based and computer applications have been developed, the use of mobile devices apps has not been sufficiently studied from the point of view of its usability for these users. In this paper, a preliminary usability and accessibility study of a memory game for mobile devices (developed from scratch under Android OS) is presented. This study, based on the Shadow Expert Technique, allows improving the prototype and provides useful hints for increasing acceptability of Android applications, not only by Acquired Brain Damage patients but also by other people with cognitive disorders.

User profiling is an important part of content-based and hybrid recommender systems. These profiles model users' interests and preferences and are used to assess an item's relevance to a particular user. In the news domain it is difficult to extract explicit signals from the users about their interests, and user profiling dep.nds on in-dep.h analyses of users' reading habits. This is a challenging task, as news articles have short life spans, are unstructured, and make use of unclear and rapidly changing terminologies. This paper discusses an approach for constructing detailed user profiles on the basis of detailed observations of users' interaction with a mobile news app. The profiles address both news categories and news entities, distinguish between long-term interests and running context, and are currently used in a real iOS mobile news recommender system that recommends news from 89 Norwegian newspapers. This paper presents a reasoning method based on the combination of Textual CBR and RBR to deal with the case described by the natural language with the intention of resolving the information retrieval in the flight-test procedure. Then experiments are made by using the reasoning system based on the method. The results show that not only could the method retrieve the cases from the system correctly, but also the Textual CBR procedure could complement the RBR procedure when the latter one cannot retrieve the case correctly. Thus the method could efficiently increase availability of the reasoning system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Traditional cellular network infrastructure provide fixed radio coverage. The temporal changes in user distribution throughout the day and from day to day leads to inefficient use of radio resources. Our position is to create an adaptive radio coverage to match the radio resources and user demand. The main approach for creating flexible radio coverage (in our view) is to replace large cells with many small cells that can be switched ON and OFF as needed. The small cells have the added crucial advantage of supporting the very high data rates expected in future networks. The proposed approach will rely on developing advanced Self Organizing Network (SON) techniques to dep.oy, monitor and manage radio resources in the small cells. This paper discusses requirements for this approach and how it can be implemented within the SON.

The article presents an application of Adaptive Splitting and Selection (AdaSS) ensemble classifier in a real-life task of designing an efficient clinical decision support system for breast cancer malignancy grading. We approach the problem of cancer detection form a different angle - we already know that a given patient has a malignant type of cancer and we want to asses the level of that malignancy to propose the most efficient treatment. We carry a cytological image segmentation process with fuzzy c-means procedure and extract a set of highly discriminative features. However, the difficulty lies in the fact, that we have a high disproportion in the number of patients between the groups, which leads to an imbalanced classification problem. To address this, we propose to use a dedicated ensemble model, which is able to exploit local areas of competence in the decision space. AdaSS is a hybrid combined classifier, based on an evolutionary splitting of object space into clusters and simultaneous selection of most competent classifiers for each of them. To increase the overall accuracy of the classification, in the hybrid training algorithm of AdaSS we embedded a feature selection and trained weighted fusion of individual classifiers based on their support functions. Experimental investigation proves that the introduced method is more accurate than previously used classification approaches.

Estimation of the orientation and location of a rigid object in 3D space using its 2D projection is considered in the current paper. In this case, a state-space model is proposed and applied to an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which estimates and tracks the parameters of 6 degree of freedom (DOF) movement (rotation and translation) of the object in 3D space. At the first stage, a matrix which projects the feature points in 3D space to 2D space is introduced based on the rotation-translation equations. Secondly, using the arrays of this matrix, the coordinates of the feature points in the image space are modeled by a state-space model. Finally, the 6DOF parameters are estimated using an EKF. The proposed algorithm is then evaluated by simulating the human head movements and the simulation results reveal that it can estimate the Euler angles with the estimation error less than 0.2 degree.

The MyHealthAvatar (MHA) is an EC FP7 project aimed to focus on research and demonstration actions, through which the achievability of an innovative representation of the health status of citizens is explored. The aim of MHA survey was to enhance our understanding of patient and public views about the MHA platform. First, we investigated the background (sociodemographic characteristics) of our respondents, their understating of the basic terms like EHR and PHR. Second, we addressed complex questions about the expected and proposed for implementation MHA platform's functionalities and of special interest were the questions about the security and privacy concerns the end users might have. In general terms the survey allowed us to examine individuals' specific hopes and concerns about MHA platform and now we have a deeper understanding of patient and public views about further MHA platform's functionalities.

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND)1 is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles — cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos with energies exceeding 108 GeV. Its ultimate goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. It will do so by detecting an unprecedented number of UHECRs and by looking with unmatched sensitivity for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them. Three key features of GRAND will make this possible: its large exposure at ultra-high energies, sub-degree angular resolution, and sensitivity to the unique signals made by UHE neutrinos. The strategy of GRAND is to detect the radio emission coming from large particle showers that develop in the terrestrial atmosphere — extensive air showers — as a result of the interaction of UHE cosmic rays, gamma, rays, and neutrinos. To achieve this, GRAND will be the largest array of radio antennas ever built. The relative affordability of radio antennas makes the scale of construction possible. GRAND will build on years of progress in the field of radio-detection and apply the large body of technological, theoretical, and numerical advances, for the first time, to the radio-detection of air showers initiated by UHE neutrinos. The design of GRAND will be modular, consisting of several indep.ndent sub-arrays, each of 10 000 radio antennas dep.oyed over 10 000 km2 in radio-quiet locations. A staged construction plan ensures that key techniques are progressively validated, while simultaneously achieving important science goals in UHECR physics, radioastronomy, and cosmology early during construction. Already by 2025, using the first sub-array of 10 000 antennas, GRAND could discover the long-sought cosmogenic neutrinos — produced by interactions of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays with cosmic photon fields — if their flux is as high as presently allowed, by reaching a sensitivity comparable to planned upgraded versions o

Textile antennas for body-worn applications have some very specific requirements and needs. From an electrical engineer's point of view, good radiation characteristics and impedance matching to the active electronics are important. From the wearer's perspective, the antenna should be unobtrusively integrated into the clothing, and the smart textile comfortable to wear. New techniques offer the potential to fulfill these different needs. One new approach consists of applying metalized eyelets to implement substrate integrated waveguide technology on textile materials. This results in high-performance on-body antennas with excellent behavior in close proximity of the human body. Two realizations are discussed: a wideband design and a miniaturized half mode substrate integrated waveguide dual-band design. Both yield excellent free-space and on-body performance, and superb antenna-body isolation, automatically resulting in very robust characteristics when dep.oyed on-body.
