Visual event sensors only output data when changes in the scene happen at very high frequency. This allows for smartly compressing the scene and thus, enabling real-time operation. Despite these advantages, works in the literature have struggled to show a niche for these event-driven approaches compared to conventional sensors, especially when focusing on accuracy performance. In this work, we show a case that fully exploits event sensor advantages: for manipulation action recognition, learning events achieves superior accuracy and time performance. The recognition of manipulation actions requires extracting and learning features from the hand pose and trajectory and the interaction with the object. As shown in our work, approaches based on event sensors are the best fit for extracting these dynamic features contrarily to conventional approaches based on full frames, which mostly extract spatial features and need to reconstruct the dynamics from sequences of frames. Finally, we show how using a tracker to extract the features to be learned only around the hand, we obtain an approach that is scene- and almost object-agnostic and achieves good time performance with a very limited impact in accuracy.

The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has presented a promising solution to the environmental and resource challenges posed by conventional combustion engine vehicles. With their potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance air quality, the adoption of EVs is essential for a more sustainable future. However, despite their benefits, widespread adoption remains limited. Thus, understanding the key factors that impact consumer adoption is crucial for promoting their use. This study aims to identify and analyze the various determinants that influence EV adoption, including social and demographic, political, economic, technological, and environmental factors. The findings offer valuable insights into the most significant barriers to EV adoption and provide potential strategies to encourage their use. Furthermore, this study examines the feasibility and sustainability of integrating EVs with public transportation via park-and-ride stations, emphasizing the importance of promoting sustainable transportation given the continued reliance on personal vehicles for park-and-ride travel.

Hypersurface, a software defined metasurface (SDM) paradigm constitutes a revolutionary technology aiming at offering programmatic control over all aspects of a propagating wave, altering its direction, power, polarization and phase. In the absence of line of sight (LOS) between a transmitter and a receiver, HSF can provide seamless connectivity via programmatic reflection. However, such an application requires fine tuning of the metasurface reconfiguration parameters, which may not be effective when done in an open loop fashion due to model uncertainties. In this work, we consider a feedback-based formulation of the problem, which involves maximization of the received power and propose the use of Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) for the controller implementation due to fact that it is model-free and adheres to the maximization problem. Extensive simulations indicate that the proposed scheme is successful in guiding the impinging wave to the receiver within reasonable time even in the presence of time varying delays incurred by message propagation. In addition, a discrete time implementation is considered, investigating its limitations as we increase the sampling time while also characterizing the traffic within the controller network.

In previous work, the efficiency of a new Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller (AFLC) was successfully tested on a real time control process. It's to know that the adaptation process do not require any kind of offline pre-training or information about the mathematical model of the plant. Starting from a defined structure of Fuzzy Logic Controller, the error and its derivative were the only information used to tune this adaptive controller. The adaptation and self learning are done by adjusting their internal parameters in real time. These papers aim to expose and focus on the enhancement proposed by the original authors of this control algorithm in order to proceed to a series of comparisons using two different control processes (Tank level and temperature of a room) that can reflects the control performances improvement. The Adaptive controller performances are improved by giving him more freedom and endowing him by evolved tools that can strongly support any kind of unexpected changes on the controlled plant behaviors. The controller exposed here can start the control with a very basic structure, assigning (arbitrarily) one membership function for each input. Through two stages, the control algorithm starts the adaptation and the control of the plant firstly by adjusting the rules consequences using the output error then in the second stage and when the adaptation process cannot bring no more improvement, the controller starts the evolved process to get a new topology that can guarantee more accuracy by adding new membership functions in the inputs spaces.

Memory rehabilitation and training is an important activity for patients with Acquired Brain Damage, including Cerebral Vascular Accident (stroke) and Traumatic Brain Injury patients. Although many interactive web-based and computer applications have been developed, the use of mobile devices apps has not been sufficiently studied from the point of view of its usability for these users. In this paper, a preliminary usability and accessibility study of a memory game for mobile devices (developed from scratch under Android OS) is presented. This study, based on the Shadow Expert Technique, allows improving the prototype and provides useful hints for increasing acceptability of Android applications, not only by Acquired Brain Damage patients but also by other people with cognitive disorders.
