This paper is dedicated to the research and development of quantization methods for wavelet-based video codec. Uniform, nonlinear quantization method and their potential applications for wavelet-based video codec Dirac have been investigated. The optimized quantization method for wavelet-based video codec have been proposed based on analysis of the processing results for various video types using quantization methods mentioned above. The processing results for various types of video show that the proposed method provides up to 4.2% bitrate saving for low distortion level in the intra-frame coding mode, up to 9.8% bitrate reduction for low distortion level and up to 11.2% bitrate saving for medium (acceptable) distortion level in the inter-frame coding mode compared to the uniform quantization method implemented in video codec Dirac.

HPC is used to solve problems that students can't practice Parallel Computing because the computer used is not adequate. The emergence of artificial neural networks (ANNs) caused a great revolution in the knowledge area of pattern-classification and contributed to the fast development of intelligent systems. For an ANN to be effective, its topology parameters must be set up, such as learning rate, number of layers, and number of neurons. Therefore, optimization algorithms can be used to produce more efficient ANNs. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm (GA) to better estimate parameters of an ANN applied to the classification of the type, strength, and orientation of different hand movements from electromyography signals. Acquired data signals were first processed with the Wavelet Transform (WT) to extract the most important features. These features were presented to the optimized hybrid intelligent system (HIS) composed of ANNs and the optimization GA. Classification results are promising, presenting accuracy rates above 90% and reliability rate of 98%. These results support the use of HIS in practical applications such as smart prostheses and automatic medical evaluations.

In this study, a new statistical multiplicative watermark detector in contourlet domain is presented. The contourlet coefficients of images are highly non-Gaussian and a proper distribution to model the statistics of the contourlet coefficients is a heavy-tail Probability Distribution Function (PDF). In this study, a multiplicative watermarking scheme is proposed in the contourlet domain using t location-scale distribution (tLS). Afterward, we used the likelihood ratio decision rule and tLS distribution to design an optimal multiplicative watermark detector. The detector showed higher efficiency than other watermarking schemes in the literature, based on the experimental results, and its robustness against different attacks was verified.

To assist home care for the elderly, we've finished a smart walker in previous study, with the features including destination track navigation, obstacle detection, self-positioning, follow-up, and wireless inductive charging. In this study, we further finish the user's intention detection function on the smart walker to control the smart walker. We install 3 pressure sensors on both sides of smart walker handles respectively to extract the user's force application, which are taken as input signal. Through AdaBoost classifier, it finishes input signal recognition and controls of the smart walker moving forward/backward directly. The user doesn't need to press the switch or click on the panel, but apply force on the handle directly, which makes the operation easier. The experiment validates that the accuracy can achieve higher than 98%, which can simplify the operation effectively and achieve the practical purpose.

Autonomous photovoltaic systems have already been proved as one of the most reliable ways to handle the electrification requirements of remote consumers in isolated areas. The technology improvement in the field of building integrated photovoltaic systems, along with the governmental financial incentives for boosting the corresponding energy sector, have increased the interest of installing small scale photovoltaic systems not only in remote dwellings but also in grid-connected households. The penetration of photovoltaic systems in densely populated areas has made people even more familiar with them and therefore people with environmental consciousness are more likely to adopt the specific technology. In this context, the present work aims in highlighting the capabilities of building integrated photovoltaic systems along with battery storage devices in covering the electrical needs of a typical dwelling using real electricity demand and meteorological data based on Typical Meteorological Year time series. The system is simulated on an hourly basis by using an integrated numerical code that has been developed by the Soft Energy Applications & Environmental Protection Laboratory of the Mechanical engineeringdep.. of Piraeus University of Applied Sciences in Greece. In this work, an attempt has been made to join the AA6082-T651 and AA7075-T651 aluminium alloys by friction stir welding (FSW). The FSW is a solid-state joining process which primarily used on aluminium because the metal is not melted during the process so the base material can not soften. For the welding were using cylindrical pin tool, marble table to avoid the harmful heat conduction, two rotation rate of 500 and1000 rpm and different traverse speeds of 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm/min to weld butt joints. The aim of present study were to experimentally explore the dissimilar bounds. For evaluations, hardness testing were using to create hardness profiles across the joint in through thickness direction and optical microscope to classify the microstructures and crystallographic textures of base materials (BM). Based on the results obtained it can be stated that the FSW suitable for AA7075 and AA6082 welding by further optimization of the process parameters.
