Wireless technologies are increasingly adopted for indoor localisation and tracking. Among them, radars based on 60 GHz phased-array transceivers are becoming a viable and low-cost solution, which delivers high accuracy with a low computational cost while preserving people privacy. In this paper, we propose two techniques for radar-based people tracking and localisation that tackle important effects such as delayed and spurious detection. We also offer a thorough and scientifically sound experimental analysis of the performance of the proposed techniques using an off-the-shelf phased-array device (i.e., the System-on-Chip (SOC) TI IWR6843).

Optimising Communication Overhead in Federated Learning Using NSGA-II

Federated learning is a training paradigm according to which a server-based model is cooperatively trained using local models running on edge devices and ensuring data privacy. These devices exchange information that induces a substantial communication’s load, which jeopardises the functioning efficiency. The difficulty of reducing this overhead stands in achieving this without decreasing the model’s efficiency (contradictory relation). To do so, many works investigated the compression of the pre/mid/post-trained models and the communication rounds, separately, although they jointly contribute to the communication overload. Our work aims at optimising communication overhead in federated learning by (I) modelling it as a multi-objective problem and (II) applying a multi-objective optimization algorithm (NSGA-II) to solve it. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first work that (I) explores the add-in that evolutionary computation could bring for solving such a problem, and (II) considers both the neuron and devices features together. We perform the experimentation by simulating a server/client architecture with 4 slaves. We investigate both convolutional and fully-connected neural networks with 12 and 3 layers, 887,530 and 33,400 weights, respectively. We conducted the validation on the MNIST dataset containing 70,000 images. The experiments have shown that our proposal could reduce the communication by 99% and maintain an accuracy equal to the one obtained by the FedAvg Algorithm that uses 100% of communications. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Discrete cosine transform as universal sentence encoder

Modern sentence encoders are used to generate dense vector representations that capture the underlying linguistic characteristics for a sequence of words, including phrases, sentences, or paragraphs. These kinds of representations are ideal for training a classifier for an end task such as sentiment analysis, question answering and text classification. Different models have been proposed to efficiently generate general purpose sentence representations to be used in pretraining protocols. While averaging is the most commonly used efficient sentence encoder, Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) was recently proposed as an alternative that captures the underlying syntactic characteristics of a given text without compromising practical efficiency compared to averaging. However, as with most other sentence encoders, the DCT sentence encoder was only evaluated in English. To this end, we utilize DCT encoder to generate universal sentence representation for different languages such as German, French, Spanish and Russian. The experimental results clearly show the superior effectiveness of DCT encoding in which consistent performance improvements are achieved over strong baselines on multiple standardized datasets. We apply the chaos supremacy of laser chaos system to the high stabilization of THz waves. Stability was demonstrated by down converting the optical beats between laser longitudinal modes in the THz domain to the radio frequency domain and comparing a conventional free running CW laser diode to a chaotically oscillating laser diode. Because of their exceptional stability, chaotically oscillating lasers are attractive options for optical pump sources in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Test automation is crucial for agile software projects to enable frequent delivery of working software with cost and time and minimal bugs. However, selecting the right automated testing tool is considered challenging due to the wide range of such existing tools. Additionally, the challenges occur clearly due to several issues such as the programming code language, the categorization of the developed system, and the tester’s knowledge and skills. This paper aims to address this gap by proposing an evaluation framework for comparing and classifying the existing automated testing tools used in agile projects. The framework is developed based on an extensive literature review of existing agile testing methodologies and common commercial automation testing techniques. The key criteria for tool evaluation are identified to cover the main testing objective aspects such as test design support, testing interfaces, reporting capabilities, etc. These criteria are considered the core methodology for this study used to analyze and compare the popular open-source and commercial tools. The proposed evaluation framework provides agile practitioners with guidelines to assist in selecting the appropriate tools based on their specific project needs such as budget, timelines, and technical expertise. This study is considered a comparative evaluation of existing agile testing tools to highlight their key strengths and limitations. The findings of this study categorized the testing tools based on the interface, code, design, and report features. This research contributes to assisting the project developer and tester in selecting suitable tools for the adoption of automated testing tools in their agile software projects. It also identifies the direction for future work, such as integrations with modern development methodologies and technologies.

In this paper, the performance of a Digital Video Broadcasting Over Satellite Link, a digital Video second-generation for satellite broadcasting (DVB-S2), was investigated and studied as a case study. The simulation was done by using Matlab in order to evaluate DVB-S2 performance developments in channel coding (LDPC codes) combined with modulation schemes (QPSK and 8-PSK ), code rates, forward error correction (FEC) and transmission channels. The obtained simulation results were graphically presented, where the bit error rate as a function of the signal to noise ratio (S/N) was evaluated as well. © 2022 IEEE.

The rapid adoption of smartphones and the explosive growth of data traffic due to these devices have been phenomenal. As the world anticipates more connected devices - the Internet of Things (IoT), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, and wearable devices - and more value-added applications and services (ultra-high-definition video, 360° video, virtual reality, smart cars, etc.), leading industry experts are calling for the sixth generation (6G) networks. Federated learning is a common distributed machine learning framework. Through the training of the global model, the problems of large communication overhead and data privacy protection in traditional centralized machine learning are solved. Federated learning (FL) is essential in optimizing wireless communication networks' resources. On the other hand, wireless communications are crucial for FL. Therefore, the purpose of this survey paper is to bridge this gap in the literature by discussing the interdep.ndency between FL and backhaul wireless communications. © 2023 ACM.

This paper presents a study on speech emotion recognition using deep learning techniques. The focus is on utilizing the Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song (RAVDESS) and the Toronto Emotional Speech Set (TESS) datasets. The proposed approach involves preprocessing the audio signals by converting them into a sequence of numbers and normalizing them using max normalization. Furthermore, the signals are augmented using three methods: noise with a 0.015 noise rate, pitch adjustment, and a combination of noise with a 0.03 noise rate and pitch adjustment. The extraction of audio features includes a combination of two features, namely Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC) and Root Mean Square (RMS) energy, which provide distinct information from each other. These features are then used to train a CNN for emotion classification. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in accurately recognizing emotions from speech signals. The proposed approach achieves an accuracy of 93.6% on the RAVDESS dataset and 99.9% on the TESS dataset. These results highlight the potential of the proposed approach in practical applications such as speech therapy and human-computer interaction.

Collaborative recommendation approaches based on nearest-neighbors are still highly popular today due to their simplicity, their efficiency, and their ability to produce accurate and personalized recommendations. This chapter offers a comprehensive survey of neighborhood-based methods for the item recommendation problem. It presents the main characteristics and benefits of such methods, describes key design choices for implementing a neighborhood-based recommender system, and gives practical information on how to make these choices. A broad range of methods is covered in the chapter, including traditional algorithms like k-nearest neighbors as well as advanced approaches based on matrix factorization, sparse coding and random walks. Energy communities are emerging entities which need their own Information and Communication System. Resilience is a key metric of such communities, and it has to be implemented for both energy supply versus public network outages and for its information system versus cyber-attacks, acting as cyber-citadels which have to resist external malicious attacks while having also digital interactions with external entities. The paper presents solutions for a resilient energy community with appropriate implementations of digital interaction for data exchange, in order to acquire external energy service for specialized companies and to deliver also information and communication-related services for external users. Principles of a Contractual Data Protection Regulation are presented, as an adaptation of data protection tailored for automated energy services and based on secure data exchange. The principles are verified in a demonstration project which has also external entities with digital interaction. © 20XX IEEE.
