Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA), with 24 to 33 nt, is the largest category of small non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules expressed in animal cells. piRNA complexes have been revealed to both epigenetic and post-transcriptional regulation in germ line and somatic tissues. Generally, they are distinct from microRNA (miRNA) in size and lack of sequence conservation. In this study, class frequency distribution identified the consensus patterns of piRNA across 9 species. To analyze the mechanism of these consensus patters, 4 target prediction tools were integrated. Furthermore, the GO-Term and pathway enrichment were approached for the functional annotation of these targets. The results indicated that two maximal conserved patterns of piRNA were identified in 8 species, whereas maximal consensus pattern in all of 9 species was TAGCTCAGTCGGTAGAGCA seemed to regulate many human genes which involved in binding and activity molecular function. Additionally, these target genes are associated with a number of rare diseases. We believe that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the functionality of piRNA cross species conserved sequences.

Regression Wavelet Analysis (RWA) is a novel wavelet-based scheme for coding hyperspectral images that employs multiple regression analysis to exploit the relationships among spectral wavelet-transformed components. The scheme is based on a pyramidal prediction, using different regression models, to increase the statistical indep.ndence in the wavelet domain. For lossless coding, RWA has proven to be superior to other spectral transform like PCA and to the best and most recent coding standard in remote sensing, CCSDS-123.0. In this paper we show that RWA also allows progressive lossy-to-lossless (PLL) coding and that it attains a rate-distortion performance superior to those obtained with state-of-the-art schemes. To take into account the predictive significance of the spectral components, we propose a Prediction Weighting scheme for JPEG2000 that captures the contribution of each transformed component to the prediction process.

We present a novel biomedical image denoising system that combines Wiener and partial differential equation (PDE) filtering to form a sequential hybrid filter. The local Wiener filter is employed to remove additive Gaussian noise in a first step; then, the PDE filter is applied to the resulting filtered image for further noise removal while preserving image edges. Experimental results showed the superiority of the proposed system over using either of the local Wiener filter or PDE filter alone.

In this paper, an approach to detect stator winding short-circuit faults in squirrel-cage induction motors based on Random Forest and Park's Vector is proposed. This is accomplished by scoring the unbalance in the current and voltage waveforms as well as in Park's Vector, both for current and voltage. To score the unbalance in the d-q space, a Principal Component Analysis is applied to Park's Vector and with the first two principal components the eccentricity is calculated, while the first principal component is used to determine the phase in short-circuit. The proposed strategy has been experimentally tested on a special 400-V, 50-Hz, 4-pole, 2.2-kW induction motor with reconfigurable stator windings in which it was possible to emulate different types of inter-turn short-circuits. The results are quite promising, even only using 1-kHz sampling frequency to acquire the current and voltage waveforms in the three phases, and the use of the Fast Fourier Transform is avoided. The developed solution may be used for tele-monitoring of the motor condition and to implement advanced predictive maintenance strategies.

Data transfer rates for aggregated video data stream and within data centers nowadays require an electrical bandwidth up to 100 GHz. This poses big challenges for the design of proper test and measurement solutions, notably related to the acquisition of signals with such a wide bandwidth. To grant sufficient bandwidth and related sample rate, modern oscilloscopes have been using techniques based on frequency-interleaving and time-interleaving, respectively. Earlier this year, an alternative technique has been presented in a white paper [1],[2] based on which an oscilloscope that can offer an electrical bandwidth that is two times that of the adopted ADC has been launched. This result is obtained by combining the operations of a couple of time interleaved channels, each one made up of a mixer followed by an ADC. The paper presents a synchronous time interleaving technique, which can be regarded as an extension of the aforementioned technique. In fact, the proposed technique can be implemented through an architecture that includes four channels, each one including a mixer and an ADC, the latter having an input bandwidth equal to just one fourth the electrical bandwidth achieved by the system.

Patterns provide a mechanism to express parallelism at a high level of abstraction and to make easier the transformation of existing legacy applications to target parallel frameworks. That also opens a path for writing new parallel applications. In this paper we introduce the REPARA approach for expressing parallel patterns and transforming the source code to parallelism frameworks. We take advantage of C++11 attributes as a mechanism to introduce annotations and enrich semantic information on valid source code. We also present a methodology for performing transformation of source code that allows to target multiple parallel programming models. Another contribution is a rule based mechanism to transform annotated code to those specific programming models. The REPARA approach requires programmer intervention only to perform initial code annotation while providing speedups that are comparable to those obtained by manual parallelization.

Recent trends in mobile cellular networks turn towards dep.oyment of Small Cell Networks (SCNs), where the cell size gets smaller and thus the number of subscribers served in a cell will be relatively smaller and should be considered finite. However, almost works on cellular mobile networks consider an infinite population cell, resulting commonly in infinite queueing models, for which no analytical solution is available for performance measures and only numerical approximations can be obtained. In this paper, a Call Admission Control (CAC) in a finite population micro-cell operating in a SCN, with retrials of blocked new calls, impatience of subscribers and multiple guard channels dedicated to handoff calls, is proposed. For the numerical computation of the steady-state probabilities of the corresponding continuous time Markov chain (CTMC), an efficient algorithm giving automatically the infinitesimal generator is developed, and various performance measures are established in network parameters and stationary probabilities. The guard channels number and retrials effect on the network performance in terms of blocking probability (for new calls and retrials) and dropping probability (of handoffs) is also carried out via experimental results.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of different burnishing strategy on a C45 steel machining. Burnishing is a well-known, cold working surface improving technology, it is usually applied for cylindrical workpiece. In the reported research a novel developed magnetic assisted ball burnishing (MABB) tool was applied which was designed for MABB machining of flat and harmonic surfaces. To increase its efficiency, different types of machining strategies were applied. After the burnishing process the machined surfaces were measured by surface roughness tester to determine the most important Rsk and Rku tribological parameters. According to the results it can be stated that all different burnishing strategies have special application areas where they can be used efficiently (e.g. sliding surface, moulding tool and after- or pre-machining for ultra-precision machining).

This work develops a CMOS active delay line for microwave CW signals. The novel active delay line is mainly based on an injection-locking (IL) technique. The delay of the input signal is linear adjusted with various injection conditions. Comparing with conventional passive or active delay lines, the proposed active delay line has a wider delay tuning range and a higher gain. The implemented CMOS delay line achieves a wide operating range of 2 ~ 2.6 GHz with very wide delay tuning range from 45~220 ns. The power consumption is lower than 7.2 mW.

In this invited presentation, we give an overview on a soundly based approach to Secure software engineering based on the UML extension UMLsec. More specifically, one main current focus is the automated, formally based analysis of software artefacts against security requirements. This is motivated by the observation that the current state of security engineering in practice is far from satisfactory. The goal is thus to start with the actual industrial engineering methods of security-critical software-based systems, to identify problems which are practically amenable to tool-supported, formally sound analysis methods, and to try to solve these problems using these methods. An important objective is to ensure that these analysis methods can actually be used in practice by keeping the additional overhead in using them bounded: First, they take as input artefacts which are already available in current industrial software development (such as UML models and program source code) and do not have to be constructed just to perform the analysis. Second, the tools should be reasonably easy to use and have a strong emphasis on automation. We also present results from some recent work on applying model-based security analysis to the analysis of economic aspects of securing critical infrastructures.
