This paper addresses the problem of fault detection in the context of a collection of agents performing a shared task and exchanging relative information over a communication network. A techniques in the literature is used to construct a meaningful observable system equivalent to the original unobservable system of systems. A solution involving Set-Valued Observers (SVOs) and a left-coprime factorization of the system is proposed to estimate the state in a distributed fashion and a proof of convergence of the estimates is given under mild assumptions. The performance of the detection algorithm against deterministic and stochastic faults;and when the system is subject to unmodeled disturbances is assessed through simulations. © 2015

In this study, we described the effects of image smoothing on image segmentation, introduced a method proposed by Yang et al. For removing smoothing effects (hereafter referred as Yang's method), and modified this method to solve image segmentation problems. The results showed that Yang's smoothing method still required further improvements, therefore, two solutions to solving problems related to this method were proposed. In Yang's method, the researchers only considered removing the effects of central pixels in a mask on mask calculation, neglecting the effects of edge pixels in a region of a mask on mask calculation. Therefore, we incorporated an edge mask calculation into Yang's method. Moreover, in Yang's method, distinct color masks are contained in the color components of a single pixel, which cause these components to yield differing adjustment results. Thus, the solution to this problem is to adopt a single-colored mask for color adjustments. The experimental results verified that the method proposed in this study effectively improved Yang's method and removed the effects of smoothing on image segmentation.

In all kind of information exchange, security is essential. One protection goal that has to be enforced is confidentiality. In state-of-the-art protocols, messages are encrypted before they are transmitted to ensure their confidentiality. However, incorporating novel technologies like network coding allows for more efficient solutions. Within this article, we compare different solutions for confidential communication by means of network coding at physical layer and at network layer. We discuss security, efficiency, and computational complexity of these approaches. The results allow to draw conclusions about the choice of a suited communication scheme dep.nding on the system model and the relevant parameters.

Due to technology scaling, the number of processor cores on a chip constantly increases. Already today, we reach the domain of so called many-core systems-on-chip. However, this advance comes at the cost of reliability, which especially affects the communication performance of the underlying network-on-chip. Today's resiliency concepts for network-on-chip like automatic repeat request with retransmission are not feasible anymore and lead to long latencies and high network load. In this paper, we propose an on-chip transmission concept based on random linear network coding to provide high resiliency and an efficient communication in many-core processors at the same time. The concept offers a flexible and efficient computable coding scheme, which is well suited for on-chip communication and allows to exploit the path diversity of large networks. First, we use a flit-level cycle-accurate simulation model to investigate the performance potential of the proposed transmission scheme on a network-on-chip with 64 cores. Second, we propose an analytic model for random linear network coding in network-on-chip with retransmission, which is able to provide a very accurate performance estimation close to the cycle-accurate simulation. Finally, we apply the analytic model to investigate the performance potential on the large-scale, assuming a processor with 1024 cores.

Void Formation on PERC Solar Cells and Their Impact on the Electrical Cell Parameters Verified by Luminescence and Scanning Acoustic Microscope Measurements

Ideally formed local Al-contacts of passivated emitter and rear contact solar (PERC) cells feature an eutectic and an uniform local back surface field (LBSF). Under certain conditions the eutectic is missing after the co-firing process, referring to the well-known voids. So far light beam induced current (LBIC) measurements are used to obtain information concerning the passivation quality of the LBSF in local contacts in general. In addition, the destructive technique of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is established for distinguishing whether a void features a sufficiently thick BSF-layer or a very thin/no BSF-layer. However, both methods are very time consuming. This paper shows a non-destructive and fast characterization of solar cells by applying electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements to investigate the effect on the electrical parameters after locating the voids by scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). For filled contacts EL and PL measurements correlate well with the resulting values for series resistance (R S ) and dark saturation current density (j 0 ): the formed LBSF leads to a good surface passivation (high PL signal intensity, low value for j 0 ) and the eutectic layer ensures a good electrical contact (high EL signal intensity, low value for R S ). Voids with a sufficiently thick LBSF show a high PL signal intensity whereas the intensity is significantly reduced for a very thin or completely missing LBSF. Increased values for R S can be explained by the missing eutectic layer. In addition, the electrical connection of the LBSF to the paste can be derived from the value of R S .

Today the cloud-desktop service, or Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), is massively replacing Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI), as confirmed by the importance of players entering the DaaS market. In this paper we study the workload of a DaaS provider, analyzing three months of real traffic and resource usage. What emerges from the study, the first on the subject at the best of our knowledge, is that the workload on CPU and disk usage are long-tail distributed (lognormal, weibull and pare to) and that the length of working sessions is exponentially distributed. These results are extremely important for: the selection of the appropriate performance model to be used in capacity planning or run-time resource provisioning, the setup of workload generators, and the definition of heuristic policies for resource provisioning. The paper provides an accurate distribution fitting for all the workload features considered and discusses the implications of results on performance analysis.

Surface clutter can corrupt both Earth and planetary Radar Sounder (RS) observations preventing definitive interpretation of subsurface features, which are often the primary interest of geologists and planetary scientists. Clutter is usually detected by manual or automatic techniques that require ancillary information about the topography of the surface. However, this topography information is not always available. In this paper, we propose a novel method for clutter detection that is indep.ndent from ancillary information. This method uses a two channel RS system to exploit the cross-channel interferometric phase difference and is made up three main steps: i) feature extraction and theoretical phase difference estimation, ii) RS interferogram formation and iii) comparison of theoretical and real phase difference distributions. The proposed method has been validated on RS data acquired in Greenland.

In this paper, a relay-based energy-efficient cooperative communication strategy is proposed, under the hypothesis that the relay transmits with power drawn from energy-harvesting (EH) sources. Assuming a deterministic EH model under which the harvested amount of energy is known prior to transmission, a spectrally efficient adaptive Bit-Interleaved Coded (BIC) OFDM modulation scheme has been investigated. To guarantee the successful reception of a packet, Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) protocol has been adopted. Assuming a long term static channel, the expected goodput (EGP) metric is used as cost function to be optimized. The most significant step-ahead of the proposed approach with respect to state-of-the-art is to increase the cooperation gain by using a bargaining game algorithm. Since most renewable sources are highly intermittent, they can induce significant fluctuation on the available power. The bargaining game algorithm takes into account the energy status of the relay and helps the source node to decide whether to cooperate or not with the relay. Achieved simulation results show that the bargaining game algorithm actually helps the nodes to select the right strategy, with a substantial goodput improvement, in particular when the energy availability of relay becomes intermittent due to the harvesting.

The TERENCE project was an European FP7 project that improved reading comprehension of its primary users, namely, 7-11 years old children, hearing and deaf 1, from primary schools, with deep text comprehension problems. The project developed an adaptive learning system (ALS) delivering learning material and tasks in an adaptive fashion, according to the profiles of its learners. The paper describes the TERENCE evaluation methodology, its innovative aspect (i.e., the parallel investigation of psycho-pedagogical effectiveness and usability), and focuses on the relationship between usability and psycho-pedagogical data. The study shows that precision in smart games is linearly related to comprehension. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
