The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND)1 is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles — cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos with energies exceeding 108 GeV. Its ultimate goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. It will do so by detecting an unprecedented number of UHECRs and by looking with unmatched sensitivity for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them. Three key features of GRAND will make this possible: its large exposure at ultra-high energies, sub-degree angular resolution, and sensitivity to the unique signals made by UHE neutrinos. The strategy of GRAND is to detect the radio emission coming from large particle showers that develop in the terrestrial atmosphere — extensive air showers — as a result of the interaction of UHE cosmic rays, gamma, rays, and neutrinos. To achieve this, GRAND will be the largest array of radio antennas ever built. The relative affordability of radio antennas makes the scale of construction possible. GRAND will build on years of progress in the field of radio-detection and apply the large body of technological, theoretical, and numerical advances, for the first time, to the radio-detection of air showers initiated by UHE neutrinos. The design of GRAND will be modular, consisting of several indep.ndent sub-arrays, each of 10 000 radio antennas dep.oyed over 10 000 km2 in radio-quiet locations. A staged construction plan ensures that key techniques are progressively validated, while simultaneously achieving important science goals in UHECR physics, radioastronomy, and cosmology early during construction. Already by 2025, using the first sub-array of 10 000 antennas, GRAND could discover the long-sought cosmogenic neutrinos — produced by interactions of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays with cosmic photon fields — if their flux is as high as presently allowed, by reaching a sensitivity comparable to planned upgraded versions o

Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been developed as an alternative to the HyperText Transfer protocol (HTTP) to connect resource-limited devices to the Web. In addition to technical advantages, the success of Internet protocols dep.nds also on their economic feasibility for the stakeholders involved in protocol dep.oyment. Therefore, this paper studies the techno-economic feasibility of CoAP by applying a methodological framework. Based on literature review and nine expert interviews, the paper identifies potential dep.oyment challenges of CoAP and suggests solutions to them. The results can be used to facilitate the dep.oyment of CoAP and to guide the potential adopters in decision-making.

Context modeling is key in wavelet-based image coding schemes to achieve competitive coding performance. Commonly, context models are devised for a particular coding system and are employed for many different types of images. The aim of this work is to evaluate the suitability of three well-known context models for coding hyperspectral images, without focusing on a particular wavelet-based coding system. To do so, an entropy-based measure defined using the mechanisms utilized by modern image codecs is employed. The experimental results assess the appropriateness of the context models considering different coding rates and transform strategies. They reveal that some widely-used context models may not be as adequate as it is generally thought. The hints provided by this analysis may help to design simpler and more efficient wavelet-based codecs for hyperspectral images.

U-Service environment based on WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) is poor in reliability of connection and has a high probability that the intrusion and the system failure may occur. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that the legitimate users make use of trustable services without discontinuance or obstacle of the services they are enjoying despite the presence of failures and intrusions. In this paper, we propose an intrusion-tolerant Jini service architecture integrating security and survivability mechanisms in order to provide end users with Jini services having a persistent state in wireless sensor networks. The proposed architecture is able to protect a Jini system not only from faults such as network partitioning or server crash, but also from attacks exploiting flaws. It is designed to provide performance enough to show a low response latency so as to support seamless service usage. Through the experiment on a test-bed, we have confirmed that the architecture is able to provide high security and availability at the level that the degradation of services quality is ignorable. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Emerging assistive technologies, such as assistive domotics and socially assistive robots have considerable potential for enhancing the lives of many elderly and physically challenged people throughout the world. Blind and visually impaired people can use these technologies for many tasks recognizing objects, handling various household duties, navigation in indoor and outdoor environments. Door detection is one of the important issues in indoor navigation. This paper presents a novel vision-based door detection technique. It is based on the geometric properties of the 4-side polygon. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested using large database of images with different levels of complexity. The experimental results show the robustness of the proposed method against changes in colors, sizes, shapes, orientations, and textures of the door. Detection rate of 83% with relatively low false positive rate for simple images is achieved. This proposed algorithm is suitable for real-time, portable applications where it only requires one digital camera and low computational resources.

In this study, we proposed a multi-piecewise thinning description method. Thinning is a preprocessing technology often applied in the fields of binary image processing; it is used to transform thick elements in an image into lines with a single pixel width. Because lines include closed and open lines, an effective description method is required for post-processing procedures. Regarding the proposed method, branch points of thinning lines are first identified and used as a basis for segmenting the lines, which are originally connected, into multiple line segments. Subsequently, we employed the find contour function available in the OpenCV library to describe the coordinates of the contours of the line segments. The starting and endpoints of closed lines can be directly obtained using the contour results of closed lines. By contrast, the starting and endpoints of open lines are achieved by first using turning points to confirm the position of line-end points and employing the adjacent pixels of the line-end and branch points before the contour results of open lines can be used. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method effectively achieved accurate descriptions for thinned lines.

This paper firstly introduces quantum computing theory into the study of granular computing, then puts forward a new granular computing model based on quantum computing theory, which fully makes full use of the parallelism of quantum computing and layered characteristics of the granular computing. As Grover quantum algorithm has some shortcomings in the classical target number of solutions to solve more problems in the search space, this paper further puts forward an improved Grover quantum search algorithm, and experiment results show it is effective.

Background: Test managers have to repeatedly select test cases for test activities during evolution of large software systems. Researchers have widely studied automated test scoping, but have not fully investigated decision support with human interaction. We previously proposed the introduction of visual analytics for this purpose. Aim: In this empirical study we investigate how to design such decision support. Method: We explored the use of visual analytics using heat maps of historical test data for test scoping support by letting test managers evaluate prototype visualizations in three focus groups with in total nine industrial test experts. Results: All test managers in the study found the visual analytics useful for supporting test planning. However, our results show that different tasks and contexts require different types of visualizations. Conclusion: Important properties for test planning support are: ability to overview testing from different perspectives, ability to filter and zoom to compare subsets of the testing with respect to various attributes and the ability to manipulate the subset under analysis by selecting and deselecting test cases. Our results may be used to support the introduction of visual test analytics in practice.

Luby transform (LT) codes are often employed during best-effort packet transfers to offer rateless erasure protection. Efficient as they are, these randomized codes with a small number of input symbols often post an inevitable performance trade-off between the decoding failure rates in their waterfall and error-floor regions. In order to surmount this trade-off, we propose a new encoding strategy that requires a portion of the high-degree output symbols of an LT code to abandon the conventional equally-probable input selection strategy; instead, connect themselves to some specially selected low-degree input symbols. Our simulation results show that short-length LT codes with merely 10 3 input symbols yield significantly lower symbol/block failure rates at a small overhead of reception as they employ the proposed strategy. These performance-enhanced rateless codes can have potential applications in real-time multimedia broadcasting.

This study addresses electrocardiogram (ECG) pulses removal from surface electromyography (sEMG) recordings. We describe a block singular spectrum analysis based adaptive noise canceler (BSSA-ANC) in order to enhance the filtering performance of sEMG signals. The proposed method distinguishes itself by adapting the eigenvalues of every input block data, using an adaptive noise canceling (ANC) filter based on error gradient minimization, during the grouping stage of the well-known SSA technique. Using semi-artificially prepared signals, we demonstrate that the least mean square (LMS) when combined with the proposed technique provides higher filtering performances than with standard mean. The simulation results using real world data confirm the improved noise rejection obtained with the proposed method.
