Collaborative web environments can support medical knowledge construction since geographically dispersed individuals can share artifacts and build diagnoses together. Thus, health professionals and students can exchange views and experiences by discussing medical cases. The purpose of this paper is to present Sanar, a collaborative web environment where professionals and students can create discussions about new cases or contribute to existing cases' discussions. This solution promotes the growth potential of the group through individual contributions, with the aim of building the medical case. It also allows the study of the different mechanisms of interaction in a global context, through the potential of Web 2.0. The Sanar prototype was developed and evaluated by doctors living in Brazil and Spain, who indicated the usefulness of the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

The Internet has emerged to be an effective platform for world universities to share their academic outcomes and to show their influence and contribution via constructing rich and easy-to-access web sites. At the same time, Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (WR), proposed by Centre for Scientific Information and Documentation (CSIC), ranks the world universities by the quantity of digital documents available on their web sites and the quality of the web pages measured by the incoming hyperlinks. Therefore, WR is currently recognized as an important index and opportunity for universities willing to promote themselves by the Internet technology. In this paper, we propose a novel cloud-based information providing system for Webometrics Rankings which employs web mining techniques to gather the WR indices from the Internet automatically, and provides useful information in real time for the managers of university web sites. The proposed system is dep.oyed on Microsoft Azure cloud platform in order to give up-to-data and deeper insights of the WR ranking indicators for its users. It utilizes the scalable computation and storage capability of the cloud platform to continually gather the WR index data from the Internet. The proposed system is designed with architecture suitable for cloud-based application such that the period to thoroughly update the WR ranking data is shortened from six months to be within one week. The proposed service model provides a paradigm for constructing cloud-based service of information providing applications.

A broadband microstrip comb-line antenna using a corporate feeding system was developed. The antenna was composed of four colinearly-arranged comb-line antennas with traveling-wave excitation fed by a parallel-feeding circuit of tournament configuration. The total phase deviation due to frequency change became one fourth of the ordinary series feeding from the end of the antenna. Furthermore, the terminations of the inner two comb-lines were connected at the overall center of the developed antenna. Therefore, the narrowband matching elements are not necessary and the amplitude deviation of the aperture distribution for input from one side due to frequency change is compensated by deviation for input from the other side. Broad bandwidth can be expected by using the proposed configuration. The proposed antenna was designed at 76.5 GHz. The effect of the proposed feeding-circuit for broadband operation was confirmed by comparing the measured performances of the antennas fed by other feeding circuits;the end feeding, the center feeding and the ordinary corporate feeding. The bandwidth of the proposed corporate feeding antenna with the center connecting was approximately 14% and 7% wider than the antennas of the center feeding and of the ordinary corporate feeding, respectively. Modeling business process allows an organization to think about its way of conducting business while helping discover weakness in its processes. Although it is common for participants to collaborate within an organization, it is essential to define how different participants from different organizations collaborate as a community, to reach a common business goal. In this context, the realization of business processes by means of services becomes more important, providing support for separating their definition from the technologies implementing them, allowing a better response to changes. A model-driven approach for the direct generation of services from business processes provides several advantages such as reuse of the knowledge imbibed in the correspondences defined between the involved metamodels and traceability between elements in both metamodels, allowing for a better Business-IT alignment. In this article we present an approach for the automatic generation of SoaML service-oriented models from collaborative business process models in BPMN2. © 2012 Authors.

This paper aimed at constructing a two-tier on-line testing system. Questions were designed based on integration of concept cartoons and multimedia in hopes that the unexplainable contents of an object can be appropriately represented and interpreted through the means of concept cartoons, and that student's understanding of the questions and interests in test taking can be effectively enhanced through pictorial presentation of concept cartoons. This system was to construct a testing tool through which tests were conducted to explore third graders' magnetism misconception. The outcomes indicated that incorporation of concept cartoons in multimedia on-line testing can improve accuracy than traditional written test on paper. During the study, 14 magnetism misconceptions entertained by the pupils were identified and classified. Further, the on-line testing tool can attain satisfactory results in system utilization, animation design, attracting students' attention and enhancing their understanding of the questions. It demonstrated the fact that integration of concept cartoons with two-tier on-line testing can improve question comprehension and students' attention. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Subsidy reduction and the increased importance of photovoltaic energy generation have triggered the need to develop accurate approaches to measure, estimate and possibly forecast energy production with the goal of enabling early detection and diagnosis of parametric faults before they become catastrophic and lead to partial or full shut down of the plant. Moreover the ability of accurately predicting the energy output of a photovoltaic plant is becoming increasingly important to operate efficiently the existing power grid infrastructure that has difficulties with intermittent, unpredictable power sources. In this paper a new model of photovoltaic solar parks designed to estimate efficiency, predict energy production and enable early fault detection is presented. The proposed model is based on an equivalent electro-thermal model of the PhotoVoltaic (PV) cell, which takes as input the irradiance, ambient temperature and wind speed measured by existing sensors and data-logging equipment used in most solar PV parks. The proposed model is demonstrated to accurately predict the performance of real-life MW scale plants. By directly comparing predicted vs. actual energy production, it also allows easy and early identification and diagnose of malfunctions and efficiency drops of PV systems.

With the development of Cloud computing, more and more Cloud systems are designed and dep.oyed to solve large-scale problem in the area of business and science engineering. However, few efforts are taken to address the issue of performance evaluation in Cloud environments. In this paper, we present an integrated performance evaluation middleware, which is aiming to provide users and researchers an easy-to-use toolkit to evaluate their Cloud system's runtime performance, or compare the performance when different resource management policy and task scheduling algorithms are taken into account. Massive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results indicate that its configurable feature is very useful when users are conducting performance comparing under different conditions. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. -All rights reserved.

Correct annotation and identification of salient regions in Kidney biopsy images can provide an estimation of pathogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. This paper presents a tool for the automatic or manual segmentation of such regions along with methodology for their characterization in terms of the exhibited pathology. The proposed implementation is based on custom code written in Java and the utilization of open source tools (i.e. RapidMiner, ImageJ). The corresponding implementation details along with the initial evaluation of the proposed integrated system are also presented in the paper.

In this paper we analyze and classify the work we did to perform an international course put together from two courses at national higher education institutions. We analyze from perspectives of organization and communication to identify which implemented didactics proved to be most valuable and which last. Special focus is on technical communication tools that enabled cooperation. However we conclude that most valuable communication for (later) collaboration are face-to-face settings that provide enough time to get to know later collaborators and speed up the processes of understanding necessary to perform successful collaboration.

Analyses of climate change impacts on wind speed and energy potential by using ANN

The main objectives of this study are; i) to define variations of wind velocity and energy potential in Istanbul and Isparta, ii) to study trends, cyclic components, micro, meso and macro scale effects and climate changing, iii) to predict wind energy potential by using artificial neural networks (ANN). Wavelet methodologies present better results on temporal and spatial data analyses. Results of this paper evaluate wind energy potential, its annual and inter-annual variability, self similarity; and relation with periodic and non-periodic fluctuations of wind speed values in two study areas.
