This paper is about the use of perceptual principles for melody estimation. The melody stream is understood as generated by the most dominant source. Since the source with the strongest energy may not be perceptually the most dominant one, it is proposed to study the perceptual properties for melody estimation: loudness, masking effect and timbre similarity. The related criteria are integrated into a melody estimation system and their respective contributions are evaluated. The effectiveness of these perceptual criteria is confirmed by the evaluation results using more than one hundred excerpts of music recordings.

The requirement of high quality electric power supply from utility is a common practice today. Thus, no matter in planning, designing, or system dispatching, it is desired to give un-interrupted electric power to customers. However, when the loading of a distribution system power feeder is too high or the feeder needs to be maintained, the feeder load should be transferred to other feeder. There are two types of feeder load transferring, interrupted and un-interrupted. The un-interrupted type means that the electric power supplied to customers will not be interrupted during feeder load transferring. However, there are several factors to affect the feeder current magnitude during load transferring, such as transformer impedances, primary side power level, and original loading of the feeder. If the current is too high, the feeder protection system will trip the feeder breakers to shut down the power supply system. A novel approach is presented to reduce the feeder current magnitude during load transferring. The phasor measurement units (PMU) will be used to obtain the synchronous voltage magnitude and phase angle of the transformers, of which feeders are transferred. A power conditioner is installed in the secondary side of the transformer. Then the phase angle values from the PMUs will be sent to the power conditioner and the suitable phase shifting will be used to reduce the phase angle difference between the two transformers. The simulation results show the feeder current magnitude will be greatly reduced during load transferring. The power supply reliability is raised.

We present a novel approach to locate multiple acoustic sources in far-field environments, in order to solve an interesting problem in different application domain, such as: audio surveillance systems and soundscape analysis frameworks. This approach aims at finding a solution to the ambiguities in Direction Of Arrivals (DOAs) combination caused by simultaneous multiple sources. The algorithm is based on two steps: the separation of the sources by means of beamforming techniques and the comparison of the Incident Signal Power (ISP) spectrum by means of a spectral distance measure. We implemented a prototype, composed by two linear arrays, that has been successfully tested in a real noisy environment.

We consider that a set of distributed agents desire to reach consensus on the average of their initial state values, while communicating with neighboring agents through a shared medium. This communication medium allows only one agent to transmit unidirectionally at a given time, which is true, e.g., in wireless networks. We address scenarios where the choice of agents that transmit and receive messages at each transmission time follows a stochastic characterization, and we model the topology of allowable transmissions with asymmetric graphs. In particular, we consider: (i) randomized gossip algorithms in wireless networks, where each agent becomes active at randomly chosen times, transmitting its data to a single neighbor;(ii) broadcast wireless networks, where each agent transmits to all the other agents, and access to the network occurs with the same probability for every node. We propose a solution in terms of a linear distributed algorithm based on a state augmentation technique, and prove that this solution achieves average consensus in a stochastic sense, for the special cases (i) and (ii). Expressions for absolute time convergence rates at which average consensus is achieved are also given.
