Attempts to develop a ubiquitous health care monitoring system arisen from the need of automatic real-time medical services for emergent diseases. Besides, the physiological statuses gathered and maintained by this system are very helpful for diagnosis and early warning. To improve the medical services and diagnosis accuracy, a Wireless Health Advanced Mobile Bio-diagnostic System (abbreviated as WHAM-BioS) is proposed. This study focuses on network/communication technology in the WHAM-BioS and proposes a novel clustered sensor network (CSN) architecture for long-term periodical telecare applications. In the proposed CSN architecture, most network functions are concentrated in a special purpose device called the human body gateway (HBG). The sensor nodes focus on detecting and reporting their detection results to their HBG To reduce the design complexity and the implementation cost for the sensor nodes, the proposed architecture proposed several protocols to help each HBG to provide a contention free environment for their sensor nodes. The contention free environment significantly reduces the power consumption in data retransmission. Besides, to further reduce the power consumption of the sensor nodes, this study also proposes a power saving mechanism which reduces the power consumption in idle listening. Based on the proposed network architecture and protocols, a prototype system is implemented. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper defines a new layered architecture for supporting optical burst switching in an optical core network. The architecture takes into account both the control plane as well as the data plane. The paper describes the functionality and the primary protocols that are required at each layer. Grid services provide an important abstract layer on top of heterogeneous components (hardware and software) that take part into a Grid environment. In this scenario, applications, like scientific visualization, require access to data of non-conventional data types, like fluid path geometry, and the evaluation of special user programs on these data. In order to support such applications we are developing CoDIMS-G, which is a data and program integration service for the Grid. CoDIMS-G provides users transparent access to data and programs distributed on the Grid, as well as dynamic resource allocation and management. We conceived a new node scheduling algorithm and designed an adaptive distributed query engine for the grid environment. Copyright 2004 ACM.

This paper is concerned with the global stability of limit cycle oscillations for a particular class of systems and uetworks. In previous work, we defined a class of parameter-dep.ndent nonlinear systems exhibiting an almost globally asymptotically stable limit cycle. The results were proven for values of the parameter in the vicinity of a bifurcation value. In the present paper we restrict ourselves to a piece wise linear version of this class of systems and adapt numerical tools recently proposed in the literature to prove global stability of the limit cycle for a fixed value of the parameter above the bifurcation value. Furthermore, we show how the global stability results for one isolated oscillator are useful to prove the existence of a globally syuchroue oscillation in particular networks of identical oscillators. One way to broadcast a popular video is to partition the video into segments, which are broadcasted on several streams periodically. The approach lets multiple users share streams;thus, the stress on the scarce bandwidth can be alleviated without sacrificing viewers’ waiting time. The segment partition can be categorized into two types: vertical and horizontal. One representative scheme based on vertical segmentation is the recursive frequency-splitting (RFS) broadcasting, which has the smallest waiting time in the literature. Based on the scheme, we propose a smooth RFS (SRFS) scheme, which can broadcast VBR-encoded videos smoothly. By dynamically arranging portions of the segments on the streams, the approach reduces the peak bandwidth consumption and the variance. Finally, we conducted a simulation to evaluate our scheme. The results indicate that the SRFS outperforms the RFS scheme on reducing the bandwidth variance and peak. The reductions can even reach 96% and 12%. The overhead is slightly higher average bandwidth. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this study, fzMail (developed in the framework of SMILe1 research), a productivity tool for intelligent managing of e-mail, is presented. Its features make either individuals or organizations e-mail communications management easier by using automatic message classification. Techniques like Fuzzy Logic and Data Mining are dealt with, in order to arrange, categorize and show every new message to the user in the best way possible, as well as to efficiently organize previously stored messages. The conceptual representation of the messages allows the analysis of the whole text in an e-mail message, as the sorting results are organized in categories that make a later conceptual search possible. Semi-automatically generated synonymy and ontology dictionaries are used with this purpose. fzMail offers an easy use from its Web settings and portability guarantees, with an implementation fully based on Java/XML.

One representative approach is the Fast Broadcasting (FB) scheme. The scheme does not obtain shortest waiting time but it can offer a more reliable video transmission on wireless networks. However, the scheme mainly supports transmission of CBRencoded videos. In this paper, we propose a FB-based scheme for VBRencoded videos. The scheme can smooth required bandwidth. From the simulation results, the SFB scheme has smaller required bandwidth, buffers, and disk transfer rate than the FB scheme. For a video, the maximum difference of its required bandwidth is less or equal to max(Bimax- Bimin), where Bimax and Bimin represent the maximum and minimum required bandwidth on stream i. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper presents an approach for intuitive and precise solid modeling in virtual reality environments. It develops a hierarchically structured and constraint-based data model to support object modeling, and uses automatic constraint recognition and precise constraint satisfaction to assist object manipulation. The proposed data model integrates a high-level constraint-based model, a mid-level hybrid solid model, and a low-level polygon model for object definition, object creation, and real-time interaction respectively. Constraint-based modeling operations and typical locating methods are also provided in the paper with details.

This paper describes an architectural approach that facilitates the dynamic adaptation of systems to changing domain rules. The approach relies on "coordination contracts", a modelling and implementation primitive we have developed for run-time reconfiguration. Our framework includes an engine that, whenever a service is called, checks the domain rules that are applicable and configures the response of the service before proceeding with the call. This approach enhances dep.ndability in two essential ways: on the one hand, it guarantees that system execution is always consistent with the domain logic because service response is configured automatically (i.e., without any need for programmer intervention);on the other hand, it makes it possible for changes to be incorporated into existing domain rules, and from new rules to be created, with little effort, because coordination contracts can be superposed dynamically without having to change neither the client nor the service code. Our approach is illustrated through a case study in financial systems, an area in which dep.ndability arises mainly in the guise of business concerns like adherence to agreed policies and conditions negotiated on a case-by-case basis. We report on an information system that ATX software developed for a company specialised in recovering bad credit. We show in particular how, by using this framework, we have devised a way of generating rule-dep.ndent SQL code for batch-oriented services. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
