Medial representations are a widely used technique in abdominal organ shape representation and parametrization. Those methods require good medial manifolds as a starting point. Any medial surface used to parameterize a volume should be simple enough to allow an easy manipulation and complete enough to allow an accurate reconstruction of the volume. Obtaining good quality medial surfaces is still a problem with current iterative thinning methods. This forces the usage of generic, pre-calculated medial templates that are adapted to the final shape at the cost of a drop in volume reconstruction. This paper describes an operator for generation of medial structures that generates clean and complete manifolds well suited for their further use in medial representations of abdominal organ volumes. While being simpler than thinning surfaces, experiments show its high performance in volume reconstruction and preservation of medial surface main branching topology. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper a new system is developed for autonomous robots to detect and track multi-objects in uncontrolled environments and in real time for the purpose of decreasing the processing time needed and obtaining better error rates than current systems. To achieve this, a novel multi object tracking algorithm is introduced, implemented and enhanced using multithreading where every thread corresponds to a detected motion area. The implementation considered not only objects tracking but also the object motion estimation to speed up the overall tracking process. In addition, a modified color tracking algorithm is also introduced and integrated in the built system. It is based on the HSV color space. This avoids the problems of overlapping detected motion areas. Experimental results on the built system demonstrate that the proposed system reduced the computational time to approximately 54% compared to published results and reduced the position error to less than 1%.

A broadband microstrip comb-line antenna using a corporate feeding system was developed. The antenna was composed of four colinearly-arranged comb-line antennas with traveling-wave excitation fed by a parallel-feeding circuit of tournament configuration. The total phase deviation due to frequency change became one fourth of the ordinary series feeding from the end of the antenna. Furthermore, the terminations of the inner two comb-lines were connected at the overall center of the developed antenna. Therefore, the narrowband matching elements are not necessary and the amplitude deviation of the aperture distribution for input from one side due to frequency change is compensated by deviation for input from the other side. Broad bandwidth can be expected by using the proposed configuration. The proposed antenna was designed at 76.5 GHz. The effect of the proposed feeding-circuit for broadband operation was confirmed by comparing the measured performances of the antennas fed by other feeding circuits;the end feeding, the center feeding and the ordinary corporate feeding. The bandwidth of the proposed corporate feeding antenna with the center connecting was approximately 14% and 7% wider than the antennas of the center feeding and of the ordinary corporate feeding, respectively. We learn graph-based similarity measures for the task of extracting word synonyms from a corpus of parsed text. A constrained graph walk variant that has been successfully applied in the past in similar settings is shown to outperform a state-of-the-art syntactic vector-based approach on this task. Further, we show that learning specialized similarity measures for different word types is advantageous.

This paper aimed at constructing a two-tier on-line testing system. Questions were designed based on integration of concept cartoons and multimedia in hopes that the unexplainable contents of an object can be appropriately represented and interpreted through the means of concept cartoons, and that student's understanding of the questions and interests in test taking can be effectively enhanced through pictorial presentation of concept cartoons. This system was to construct a testing tool through which tests were conducted to explore third graders' magnetism misconception. The outcomes indicated that incorporation of concept cartoons in multimedia on-line testing can improve accuracy than traditional written test on paper. During the study, 14 magnetism misconceptions entertained by the pupils were identified and classified. Further, the on-line testing tool can attain satisfactory results in system utilization, animation design, attracting students' attention and enhancing their understanding of the questions. It demonstrated the fact that integration of concept cartoons with two-tier on-line testing can improve question comprehension and students' attention. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Subsidy reduction and the increased importance of photovoltaic energy generation have triggered the need to develop accurate approaches to measure, estimate and possibly forecast energy production with the goal of enabling early detection and diagnosis of parametric faults before they become catastrophic and lead to partial or full shut down of the plant. Moreover the ability of accurately predicting the energy output of a photovoltaic plant is becoming increasingly important to operate efficiently the existing power grid infrastructure that has difficulties with intermittent, unpredictable power sources. In this paper a new model of photovoltaic solar parks designed to estimate efficiency, predict energy production and enable early fault detection is presented. The proposed model is based on an equivalent electro-thermal model of the PhotoVoltaic (PV) cell, which takes as input the irradiance, ambient temperature and wind speed measured by existing sensors and data-logging equipment used in most solar PV parks. The proposed model is demonstrated to accurately predict the performance of real-life MW scale plants. By directly comparing predicted vs. actual energy production, it also allows easy and early identification and diagnose of malfunctions and efficiency drops of PV systems.

With the development of Cloud computing, more and more Cloud systems are designed and dep.oyed to solve large-scale problem in the area of business and science engineering. However, few efforts are taken to address the issue of performance evaluation in Cloud environments. In this paper, we present an integrated performance evaluation middleware, which is aiming to provide users and researchers an easy-to-use toolkit to evaluate their Cloud system's runtime performance, or compare the performance when different resource management policy and task scheduling algorithms are taken into account. Massive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results indicate that its configurable feature is very useful when users are conducting performance comparing under different conditions. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. -All rights reserved.

Efficient utilization of the computational resources is an urgent demand especially if real time constraints should be guaranteed. Moreover, an acceptable level of reliability should be provided due to the critical nature of some real time applications. This paper proposes a new approach for processing power reservations that efficiently utilizes all the available processing power to improve reliability and schedulability of indep.ndent real time tasks on a uniprocessor. The basic idea of the proposed approach is to use all of the available processing power in the time interval between the arrivals of two successive tasks or when an existing task dep.rts. The advantages of this mechanism are: 1) it reduces the execution time required for each task and hence increases its reliability. 2) At the arrival of a new task;the processing power requirements for the executing tasks to meet their deadlines are smaller, which gives the new arriving tasks higher chances to be accommodated with the existing ones. 3) Efficient processing power utilization may reduce the power consumption in processors with dynamic voltage scaling. An illustration example and simulation experiments showed that our approach provides a more reliable scheduling scheme with higher acceptance rate compared to the traditional approach based on Rialto operating system. © 2012 International Journal of computer science Issues.

Today, enterprises to be efficient and competitive within their business environments should seamlessly adapt, collaborate and interoperate with each other. However, the diversity in the way they organize their knowledge through ontologies, brings about the crucial need for establishing semantic interoperability between all communicating parties. One approach to solve this problem is the use of MENTOR, a particular methodology based on the development of a common, top-level reference ontology that serves as an intermediary in the communications between the various enterprises, harmonizing not semantically coincident ontologies that represent the same segment of reality. This methodology allows the enterprises to keep their own ontologies and semantics unchanged internally, enhancing thus semantic interoperability between them with low intra-enterprises changes, cost and effort. This paper proposes the integration of MENTOR methodology within an Interoperability Service Utility (ISU), i.e. an intelligent system that serves as a utility software component to promote interoperability among communicating enterprises. The present work describes design and implementation specifications of such an infrastructure and explains how MENTOR methodology will enable the proposed ISU to seamlessly provide the necessary set of e-services that will deliver and sustain interoperability across its enterprise users. © 2012 IEEE.

The conventional methods using χ2 value have been proposed to detect anomaly attacks. These systems, however, merely treat the one feature such as the source IP address or the destination port number as the probabilistic variable. The method based on multiple variables has not been proposed to aim to improve the accuracy of anomaly detection. In this paper, we propose the multiple features χ2 method named the CSDM (Chi-square-based Space Division Method) to improve the detection accuracy. The F-measure values of CSDM and the conventional method are compared to evaluate these systems. We also focus on the learning mechanism and it's affection for both systems. As the results of experiments using the source IP address, the destination port number, and the interval time deviation of arriving packets as the probabilistic variables, the proposed CSDM improves the F-measure compared to the conventional method meaning that the CSDM using multiple features can improve the F-measure over DoS/DDoS attacks and double attacks with 30% attacking rate. In addition, the learning time of the 2 days in the CSDM system is enough to learn the behavior of normal condition and can reveal the quick learning@performance with the high F-measures. © 2012 IEEE.
