The requirements elicitation process is particularly difficult in Global Software Development (GSD) environments owing principally to cultural differences and communication problems derived from the geographical distance that separates stakeholders. For this reason it is necessary to train professionals in the skills needed to confront a requirements elicitation process in a GSD environment. In this paper we present the generic and specific competences derived from our review of literature that a software engineer must have if s/he Li to carry out requirements elicitation. We have used these skills to design a tool to support the teaching of requirements elicitation in GSD. This tool is a simulator which, by using virtual gents, will enable students and professionals to acquire a subset of the skills necessary for requirements elicitation in GSD.

In this paper we present a solar energy harvesting circuit for low-power applications describing circuit architecture and guidelines for an optimal design. We evaluate the performance of two implemented prototypes intended to power a wireless embedded system under different light intensities and different switching frequencies. Measurements show that higher switching frequencies allow reaching the maximum efficiency (~90%) at higher light intensities, whereas lower operating frequencies perform better under lower irradiance. Experimental results show that circuit optimization dep.nds on light conditions and the proposed solar energy harvester can autonomously supply the nodes of a wireless sensor network WSN.

Network optimization especially in power industry is one of the main goals of system engineering. It not only reduces the cost of the system but also improves its stability. Among various methods of optimal control of power networks, like Linear Optimal Control (LOC), a model-based adaptive optimal method has been presented here which can also be used in multi machines systems with multimode high and low-frequency oscillations; although this paper only addresses linear and reduced machine-order equations which are derived from an equivalent system with an infinite-bus and a line. In this paper a model for the machine and the network is first presented and then by definitions of reference model and errors, these errors will be tend to zero in an optimal way, so that the system actually tracks the reference model. This method will be seen to be a general one and is applicable both in high and low frequencies.

The requirements elicitation process is that which is the most critical in software development. For this reason it is necessary to train professionals in the skills needed to confront this process. Traditionally this has not been an easy task and with the arrival of new paradigms such as global software development (GSD) it has become more difficult. It thus becomes necessary to rely on new methods and tools which should support this process in a GSD environment. In this work we outline the characteristics of a simulator for the education and training of global requirements engineering and indicate the competences that this simulator would allow us to develop.

The growing design complexity of today's embedded real-time systems requires new techniques aiming the raising of the abstraction level since earlier stages of design in order to deal with such complexity in a suitable way. This paper reports a case study, which provides an assessment of two well-know high-level paradigms, namely Aspect- (AO) and Object-Oriented (OO) Paradigms. Concepts of both paradigms were applied at modeling phase of a Distributed Embedded Real-Time System (DERTS). The handling of DERTS’ functional and non-functional requirements (at modeling level) using AO and OO concepts is discussed. Both paradigms are compared using of a set of software engineering metrics, which were adapted to be applied at modeling level. The presented results show the suitability of each paradigm for DERTS specification in terms of reusability quality of model elements.

Noise signals are often encountered in several science and engineering fields. They can be originated by a lot of different mechanisms, some of which are still not sufficiently understood. Since reliability and performance of many systemsdep.nd on their noise sensitivity and noise rejection capability, suitable noise sources are required to lead appropriate tests to investigate the behavior of the same systems in the presence of noise. At present, only white noise sources are available on the market. Technicians that need to generate colored noise could use arbitrary waveform generators as noise sources;but, they will barely find application notes that support them in this challenging task. This work presents tutorial notes related to the simulation of colored noise, in particular of composite-power-law noise, and proposes an analog generator that exploits an arbitrary waveform generator as noise source.

Biophotonic imaging can be used to characterize tumor growth in animal models. Estimation of the numbers and location of target cells is dep.ndent on accurate segmentation of a target region from the background luminescence of the animal body. Existing software systems extract general regions of interest in complex images but can fail to detect details or faint regions of interest in the presence of higher luminescent activity. Limited work has been published in the analysis of these images. We explore the use of popular medical image segmentation techniques in segmentation of bioluminescence images. The ability of each algorithm in detecting regions of interest is tested using established performance measures. Based on the characteristics of bioluminescence images of animal tumor models, and the performance of the algorithms, we formulate a framework for segmentation techniques best suited for this application.

This paper describes the motivation and learning subsystems of Arisco which is a mechatronic head with interactive capacity which includes high expressivity through gesturing, voice recognition, text to speech generation, visual tracking, and internet information retrieval. The general architecture is first described in the paper. Then, the learning capacity of Arisco is addressed. It learns and performs associations between different stimulus responses through several dynamic neural networks, guided by motivational drives. A number of experiments are discussed, covering stimulus competition, habituation, classical and operant conditioning.

This paper shows the relevance of a design approach based on emerging behaviours and context potentialities in educational environments. It reports on a music educational course evaluated over a period of five months by a team of interaction designers. The analysis of the activities allowed us to collect two types of data: the problematics and the emergent qualities of the context. The results of the analysis and the definition of a theoretical framework converged toward the description of some challenges for the design, which will be explored in the future collaboration.
