A new method based on the well-known technique of Grammatical Evolution, is introduced for data classification. The method constructs classification programs in a C - like programming language in order to classify the input data, producing simple if - else rules. The method is executed in mobile (Android/IOS) environments and the final classification program is displayed on the mobile device screen. © 2014 ACM.

Power consumption is becoming an increasingly important component of processor design. As technology node shrinks both static and dynamic power become more relevant. This is particularly critical for the cache hierarchy. Previous implementations mainly focus on reducing only one kind of power in the cache, either static or dynamic. However, for a more robust approach that will remain relevant as technology continues to shrink, both aspects of power need to be addressed. Recent processors, e.g. Intel Core or IBM Power8, implement simultaneous multithreading (SMT) cores to hide high memory latencies. In these systems, the dynamic energy in the L1 cache is even more stressed since this cache level is shared by several threads running on the same core. This paper proposes and evaluates the use of phase adaptive caches in all structures of a 3-level cache hierarchy of a SMT cores. Compared to the use of conventional caches, our work results on significant dynamic and leakage energy savings with scarce performance impact.

This paper presents an innovative framework concept combined with online labs for teaching and learning of engineering subjects. The concept integrates comprehensive approaches of different classical and innovative aspects. The paper gives an overview of current state-of-art technologies in remote and virtual labs and some existing activities for transnational online experimentation frameworks. New comprehensive teaching and learning concept for robotics and smart devices is presented together with practical results. The implemented remote lab portal - DistanceLab is presented in detail focusing on three different remote labs: Virtual microcontroller lab, Smart greenhouse lab, and Mobile robot lab.

The 2U-size cubesat RAIKO was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in July 2012, and released to space in October 2012. The preset sequences of the 30-min initial separation phase were successfully carried out, and 46 photos were taken and stored to memory by the onboard CMOS and CCD sensors. Four Japanese universities collaborated in joint operations of RAIKO, which included successful S-band command/telemetry operations at a telemetry downlink rate of 100 kbps using the 100-mW onboard transmitter. In addition, Ku-band beacon signals were successfully monitored to determine the orbit and atmospheric disturbances. This paper presents an outline of RAIKO, the ground station network, the operation method, and associated results. The cubesat RAIKO inherited the satellite bus technology of a 50-kg microsatellite, and various technology demonstrations were achieved. Through the joint operation of RAIKO, the ground station network was practically improved and will contribute to the operations of future micro- and nanosatellites.

In this study, we proposed a multi-piecewise thinning description method. Thinning is a preprocessing technology often applied in the fields of binary image processing; it is used to transform thick elements in an image into lines with a single pixel width. Because lines include closed and open lines, an effective description method is required for post-processing procedures. Regarding the proposed method, branch points of thinning lines are first identified and used as a basis for segmenting the lines, which are originally connected, into multiple line segments. Subsequently, we employed the find contour function available in the OpenCV library to describe the coordinates of the contours of the line segments. The starting and endpoints of closed lines can be directly obtained using the contour results of closed lines. By contrast, the starting and endpoints of open lines are achieved by first using turning points to confirm the position of line-end points and employing the adjacent pixels of the line-end and branch points before the contour results of open lines can be used. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method effectively achieved accurate descriptions for thinned lines.

A stable and reliable power distribution system is an inevitable pre-requisite for the technological and smarter power system. Furthermore, the traditional methodology for improving reliability of distribution system under smart grid environment will be unavailing. For this purposed, a novel approach is presented for multi objective placement and number of the Fault Indicator (Fl) in the smart distribution systems. The reliability index and investment cost are considered as multifarious objectives in the multi objective problem. Due to its good handling of non-convex and mixed integer problem, a Fuzzy Clustering-based Genetic Algorithm (FCGA) is utilized for optimization problem. The simulation is conducted on a 50 node real system to trace the capability of proposed algorithm.

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND)1 is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles — cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos with energies exceeding 108 GeV. Its ultimate goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. It will do so by detecting an unprecedented number of UHECRs and by looking with unmatched sensitivity for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them. Three key features of GRAND will make this possible: its large exposure at ultra-high energies, sub-degree angular resolution, and sensitivity to the unique signals made by UHE neutrinos. The strategy of GRAND is to detect the radio emission coming from large particle showers that develop in the terrestrial atmosphere — extensive air showers — as a result of the interaction of UHE cosmic rays, gamma, rays, and neutrinos. To achieve this, GRAND will be the largest array of radio antennas ever built. The relative affordability of radio antennas makes the scale of construction possible. GRAND will build on years of progress in the field of radio-detection and apply the large body of technological, theoretical, and numerical advances, for the first time, to the radio-detection of air showers initiated by UHE neutrinos. The design of GRAND will be modular, consisting of several indep.ndent sub-arrays, each of 10 000 radio antennas dep.oyed over 10 000 km2 in radio-quiet locations. A staged construction plan ensures that key techniques are progressively validated, while simultaneously achieving important science goals in UHECR physics, radioastronomy, and cosmology early during construction. Already by 2025, using the first sub-array of 10 000 antennas, GRAND could discover the long-sought cosmogenic neutrinos — produced by interactions of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays with cosmic photon fields — if their flux is as high as presently allowed, by reaching a sensitivity comparable to planned upgraded versions o

Estimation of the orientation and location of a rigid object in 3D space using its 2D projection is considered in the current paper. In this case, a state-space model is proposed and applied to an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which estimates and tracks the parameters of 6 degree of freedom (DOF) movement (rotation and translation) of the object in 3D space. At the first stage, a matrix which projects the feature points in 3D space to 2D space is introduced based on the rotation-translation equations. Secondly, using the arrays of this matrix, the coordinates of the feature points in the image space are modeled by a state-space model. Finally, the 6DOF parameters are estimated using an EKF. The proposed algorithm is then evaluated by simulating the human head movements and the simulation results reveal that it can estimate the Euler angles with the estimation error less than 0.2 degree.

Textile antennas for body-worn applications have some very specific requirements and needs. From an electrical engineer's point of view, good radiation characteristics and impedance matching to the active electronics are important. From the wearer's perspective, the antenna should be unobtrusively integrated into the clothing, and the smart textile comfortable to wear. New techniques offer the potential to fulfill these different needs. One new approach consists of applying metalized eyelets to implement substrate integrated waveguide technology on textile materials. This results in high-performance on-body antennas with excellent behavior in close proximity of the human body. Two realizations are discussed: a wideband design and a miniaturized half mode substrate integrated waveguide dual-band design. Both yield excellent free-space and on-body performance, and superb antenna-body isolation, automatically resulting in very robust characteristics when dep.oyed on-body.

The alternative electromagnetic (EM) fields radiating from a ship are widely recognized as new contributors to the application of underwater target detection. This paper focuses on the estimation of this extremely low frequency (ELF) signature from a fuzzy fusion enhancement aspect. Firstly, the ELF signature estimation problem is expanded to a fuzzy credibility solution issue, and a generalized multi-attribute fuzzy vector which represents each frequency points' line spectrum characteristic is obtained by a statistical procedure on sensor's instantaneous spectral analysis. Then, the fuzzy fusion method is applied to obtain the credible degree of each frequency point to be an ELF. Finally, threshold is set to extract ship's truly ELF signature with largest likelihood and shield interference of the noise ELF signature. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has particular advantage in remote target detection.
