In this study, we proposed a multi-piecewise thinning description method. Thinning is a preprocessing technology often applied in the fields of binary image processing; it is used to transform thick elements in an image into lines with a single pixel width. Because lines include closed and open lines, an effective description method is required for post-processing procedures. Regarding the proposed method, branch points of thinning lines are first identified and used as a basis for segmenting the lines, which are originally connected, into multiple line segments. Subsequently, we employed the find contour function available in the OpenCV library to describe the coordinates of the contours of the line segments. The starting and endpoints of closed lines can be directly obtained using the contour results of closed lines. By contrast, the starting and endpoints of open lines are achieved by first using turning points to confirm the position of line-end points and employing the adjacent pixels of the line-end and branch points before the contour results of open lines can be used. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method effectively achieved accurate descriptions for thinned lines.

Multihoming is among the features of SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol), which makes it more robust and efficient than TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)but more vulnerable under attack. Nevertheless, a strong security can degrade the QoS(Quality of Service) by adding additional delay. Therefore, we propose in this paper, a secure authentication protocol that supports the establishment of multiple connections to protect multihoming networks with the least number of messages, number of parameters in each message and number of communicating nodes. The proposed scheme provides lower delay of authentication and protects against several attacks. Our devised protocol is analyzed using SPAN (Security Protocol Animator) for AVISPA (Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications) tool. Emerging assistive technologies, such as assistive domotics and socially assistive robots have considerable potential for enhancing the lives of many elderly and physically challenged people throughout the world. Blind and visually impaired people can use these technologies for many tasks recognizing objects, handling various household duties, navigation in indoor and outdoor environments. Door detection is one of the important issues in indoor navigation. This paper presents a novel vision-based door detection technique. It is based on the geometric properties of the 4-side polygon. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested using large database of images with different levels of complexity. The experimental results show the robustness of the proposed method against changes in colors, sizes, shapes, orientations, and textures of the door. Detection rate of 83% with relatively low false positive rate for simple images is achieved. This proposed algorithm is suitable for real-time, portable applications where it only requires one digital camera and low computational resources.

In mountain areas, soil moisture is a key parameter for both agricultural management and natural hazard support. This paper presents an approach for retrieval of soil moisture content (SMC) from different satellite sensors with a specific focus on mountain areas. The experimental analysis was carried out on images acquired over the Sudtirol/Alto Adige Province (Italy) during 2010-2011 from the RADARSAT2 in quad-pol mode and Envisat ASAR in Wide Swath mode in VV polarization. The methodology for soil moisture retrieval is based on the Support Vector Regression (SVR) method specifically trained to be able to consider topographic effects of the mountain areas. The comparison with ground measurements collected during field campaigns indicates an RMSE value of around 5% of SMC% while the comparison with fixed ground stations reports an error of around 9% of SMC%. Comparing RADARSAT2 and ASAR SMC, both datasets reveal very similar distributions of SMC values. The cumulative histogram curve for the two datasets shows a slight underestimation of SMC in the ASAR product. This could be ascribed to the reduced resolution of ASAR WS and the use of VV polarization.

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the major existing problems in Intensive Care Units (ICU). CRBSI has a high prevalence and its treatment is quite costly in time and medication. One of the essential efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of CRBSI is the use of existing Clinical Guidelines (CG). Nevertheless, its adoption and integration into daily practice is quite complex due to the lack of software tools that cover all the needs. Considering this problem, in this work we identify some of the needs detected in daily work, and we present two tools for ICUs that makes the introduction of CGs and patient's data visualization simple. As a first goal we propose to obtain a computerized model of the clinical guideline. Gewel is an application that allows the mapping of a textual CG into a workflow model. In this tool we propose a process that (1) organizes the parts of the textual document according to GEM, (2) maps concepts to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, called CH4, so that it can automatically retrieve data and send HL7 messages, (3) supports the design of a workflow model that assists the following up of the steps and the measure of adherence to the CG, and (4) according to Evidence Based Medicine principles, allows the doctors to trace from the task or decision point of the workflow to the exact part of the document where it was originated. Once the CG is computerized and integrated in the EHR, the next goal is to identify key clinical problems, such as CRBSI, and retrieve the relevant information from the EHR. Due to the big amount of the EHR data registered in an ICU, physician's attention should be drawn to the clinical information related to the problem to be solved. We propose a mobile application, called mProblem View, that permits to establish and visualize relations between the elements of the EHR in a Problem-Oriented EHR approach.

The collective motion of a set of moving entities like people, birds, or other animals, is characterized by groups arising, merging, splitting, and ending. Given the trajectories of these entities, we define and model a structure that captures all of such changes using the Reeb graph, a concept from topology. The trajectory grouping structure has three natural parameters, namely group size, group duration, and entity inter-distance. These parameters allow us to obtain detailed or global views of the data. We prove complexity bounds on the maximum number of maximal groups that can be present, and give algorithms to compute the grouping structure efficiently. Furthermore, we showcase the results of experiments using data generated by the NetLogo flocking model and from the Starkey project. Although there is no ground truth for the groups in this data, the experiments show that the trajectory grouping structure is plausible and has the desired effects when changing the essential parameters. Our research provides the first complete study of trajectory group evolvement, including combinatorial, algorithmic, and experimental results. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper reports the user-based usability evaluations performed in Italy of the first release of the learner Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the TERENCE project. This project aims at developing an adaptive learning system for training the reasoning about stories' events of the TERENCE learners in Italy and in UK. Learners are 7-11 year old children, hearing and deaf, that have difficulties in correlating the events of a story, making inferences about them, and detecting inconsistencies. The evaluation of the first release of the TERENCE adaptive learning system software prototypes tackles their usability in order to quickly reveal possible usability problems, as well as to address the TERENCE team to solve them, before the large scale evaluation. Moreover, authors try to carried out important general issues related to the experiment performance. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

A nonminimum-phase channel can always be decomposed into a minimum-phase part and an all-pass part. In our approach, called all-pass CMA, the dimensionality of the CMA algorithm has been reduced to improve blind equalization of a nonminimum-phase channel's all-pass part. The dimensionality reduction has been performed by parameterizing the CMA cost function in terms of the nonminimum-phase zero location of the all-pass part to be compensated. Currently, all-pass CMA can only compensate a single nonminimum-phase zero. However, compared to CMA, it typically provides a faster and more accurate compensation of this zero. © 2013 IEEE.
