The final ATLAS Run 1 measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in the decay channel H→ZZ*→ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′−, where ℓ, ℓ′=e or μ, are presented. These measurements were performed using pp collision data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.5 and 20.3 fb−1 at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The H→ZZ*→4ℓ signal is observed with a significance of 8.1 standard deviations, with an expectation of 6.2 standard deviations, at mH=125.36 GeV, the combined ATLAS measurement of the Higgs boson mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ*→4ℓ channels. The production rate relative to the Standard Model expectation, the signal strength, is measured in four different production categories in the H→ZZ*→4ℓ channel. The measured signal strength, at this mass, and with all categories combined, is 1.44−0.33+0.40. The signal strength for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion or in association with tt¯ or bb¯ pairs is found to be 1.7−0.4+0.5, while the signal strength for vector-boson fusion combined with WH/ZH associated production is found to be 0.3−0.9+1.6.

A search is performed for top-quark pairs (tt¯) produced together with a photon (γ) with transverse energy greater than 20 GeV using a sample of tt¯ candidate events in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In total, 140 and 222 tt¯γ candidate events are observed in the electron and muon channels, to be compared to the expectation of 79±26 and 120±39 non-tt¯γ background events, respectively. The production of tt¯γ events is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations away from the null hypothesis. The tt¯γ production cross section times the branching ratio (BR) of the single-lepton decay channel is measured in a fiducial kinematic region within the ATLAS acceptance. The measured value is σtt¯γfid×BR=63±8(stat)−13+17(syst)±1(lumi) fb per lepton flavor, in good agreement with the leading-order theoretical calculation normalized to the next-to-leading-order theoretical prediction of 48±10 fb.

We present a novel approach to locate multiple acoustic sources in far-field environments, in order to solve an interesting problem in different application domain, such as: audio surveillance systems and soundscape analysis frameworks. This approach aims at finding a solution to the ambiguities in Direction Of Arrivals (DOAs) combination caused by simultaneous multiple sources. The algorithm is based on two steps: the separation of the sources by means of beamforming techniques and the comparison of the Incident Signal Power (ISP) spectrum by means of a spectral distance measure. We implemented a prototype, composed by two linear arrays, that has been successfully tested in a real noisy environment. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes the implementation of an innovative musical interface based on the sound localization capability of a microphone array. Our proposal is to allow a musician to plan and conduct the expressivity of a performance, by controlling in realtime an audio processing module through the spatial movement of a sound source, i.e. voice, traditional musical instruments, sounding mobile devices. The proposed interface is able to locate and track the sound in a two-dimensional space with accuracy, so that the x-y coordinates of the sound source can be used to control the processing parameters. In particular, the paper is focused on the localization and tracking of harmonic sound sources in real moderate reverberant and noisy environment. To this purpose, we designed a system based on adaptive parameterized Generalized Cross-Correlation (GCC) and Phase Transform (PHAT) weighting with Zero-Crossing Rate (ZCR) threshold, a Wiener filter to improve the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and a Kalman filter to make the position estimation more robust and accurate. We developed a Max/MSP external objects to test the system in a real scenario and to validate its usability.

We study the problem of finding the optimal connection between two disconnected vertex-weighted trees. We are given a distance function on the vertices and seek to minimize the routing cost of the tree resulting from adding one single edge between the two trees. The routing cost is defined as the sum of the weighted distances between all pairs of vertices in the induced tree-metric. The problem arises when augmenting and/or repairing communication networks or infrastructure networks. We present an asymptotically optimal quadratic-time algorithm for the general case and show that the problem can be solved more efficiently for the Euclidean metric, when vertices are mapped to points in the plane, as well as for compactly representable graph metrics.

We consider a framework for bi-objective network construction problems where one objective is to be maximized while the other is to be minimized. Given a host graph G = (V,E) with edge weights we ∈ and edge lengths e ∈ for e ∈ E we define the density of a pattern subgraph H = (V′,E′) ⊆ G as the ρ(H) = ∑eΕE′we/∑eΕE′ e ratio . We consider the problem of computing a maximum density pattern H with weight at least W and and length at most L in a host G. We consider this problem for different classes of hosts and patterns. We show that it is NP-hard even if the host has treewidth 2 and the pattern is a path. However, it can be solved in pseudo-polynomial linear time if the host has bounded treewidth and the pattern is a graph from a given minor-closed family of graphs. Finally, we present an FPTAS for a relaxation of the density maximization problem, in which we are allowed to violate the upper bound on the length at the cost of some penalty. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we propose a method of eye detection based on skin color analysis under varying illumination. The proposed method consists of several phases, including color conversion, skin color segmentation and face mask calculation, facial feature extraction and eye candidate determination, and detection of human eyes. To eliminate the effect of lighting change on the performance of eye detection, color conversion is first performed. Face mask calculation based on skin color segmentation is then carried out to reduce the possible searching region of human eyes. Eye candidates detected using facial features are used to define the possible human eyes. Human eyes are thus detected by the geometric features of gravity and spatial centers for these eye candidates. Results show that the proposed method works well for faces with different poses and multiple faces under varying illumination. The eye detection time of 21.8 ms is achieved for an image of size 213×320 pixels, indicating computational efficiency of the proposed system. © 2011 IEEE.

The mobile devices have grown rapidly with the progresses of information technology those years. The mobile devices, such as i-Phone, i-Pad, Tablet PC and smart-phone, have become personal and business tools. Those devices are specially developed for mobile users on the basis of the conceptual design of personal digital assistant (PDA) long time ago, but the scopes of the usages extend much more extensive through integrated multimedia needs. This paper proposes a model called integrated usability model (IUM), derived from the technology acceptance model (TAM), to transfer the design criteria into the design guidelines. By using IUM, the developers for multimedia mobile device can use the conceptual indicators like mobile, integration and convenience to reduce the large-scale design factors and evaluate the capability and acceptance for the users. It turns out that the developers can speed up the design processes and avoid the repeated and time-consuming reworks. A mobile multimedia device development for the integrated graphic hand-sketch tablet is presented in this paper. This development uses IUM to reduce the design criteria and then transfer the result criteria into design guidelines. This paper demonstrates the practices of the multi-demand product design as the case validation of IUM. © 2011 IEEE.

Directional relations are fundamental to spatial data queries, analysis and reasoning. Consequently there has been a significant amount of effort to determine directional relations between two regions. However, many existing methods do not perform well when the regions are neighboring or intertwined. In this paper we introduce a new model for directional relations which is based on a splitting line separating the two regions in question. We identify essential quality criteria for directional relation models and translate them into measurable properties of a given splitting line. We present an efficient algorithm that computes an optimal splitting line for two regions and perform extensive experiments. Our results show that the splitting line model captures directional relations very well and that it clearly outperforms existing approaches on pairs of neighboring or intertwined regions. © 2011 ACM.

We apply ascending biding behavior of English auction to solve the revenue loss problem of generalized second price auction (GSP) in repeated sponsored search auction (SSA) for the search engine provider (SEP). The mechanism proposed in this paper is denoted by Non-decreasing Sponsored Search Auction (NDSSA). We focus on analyzing SEP's revenue lower bound and auction efficiency after converging. We proof that SEP's revenue in NDSSA is at least equal to α times of that in Vickrey-Clarke-Groves auction (VCG), while α is the reciprocal of the first click-through rate (CTR). Since any CTR is normalized to a decimal, SEP in NDSSA will obtain more revenue than in VCG. Moreover, NDSSA is efficient, and advertisers with higher valuations will be ranked in better slots. © 2011 IEEE.
