This paper is about multiple-F0 tracking and the estimation of the number of harmonic source streams in music sound signals. A source stream is understood as generated from a note played by a musical instrument. A note is described by a hidden Markov model (HMM) having two states: the attack state and the sustain state. It is proposed to first perform the tracking of F0 candidates using a high-order hidden Markov model, based on a forward-backward dynamic programming scheme. The propagated weights are calculated in the forward tracking stage, followed by an iterative tracking of the most likely trajectories in the backward tracking stage. Then, the estimation of the underlying source streams is carried out by means of iteratively pruning the candidate trajectories in a maximum likelihood manner. The proposed system is evaluated by a specially constructed polyphonic music database. Compared with the frame-based estimation systems, the tracking mechanism improves significantly the accuracy rate.

The growing design complexity of today's embedded real-time systems requires new techniques aiming the raising of the abstraction level since earlier stages of design in order to deal with such complexity in a suitable way. This paper reports a case study, which provides an assessment of two well-know high-level paradigms, namely Aspect- (AO) and Object-Oriented (OO) Paradigms. Concepts of both paradigms were applied at modeling phase of a Distributed Embedded Real-Time System (DERTS). The handling of DERTS’ functional and non-functional requirements (at modeling level) using AO and OO concepts is discussed. Both paradigms are compared using of a set of software engineering metrics, which were adapted to be applied at modeling level. The presented results show the suitability of each paradigm for DERTS specification in terms of reusability quality of model elements.

This paper discusses different formal models to represent educational processes and their use by computer systems. Currently most of these models are tied to specific application scenarios and tools, which reduces the transferability and re-usability of these models in different contexts. To achieve the interoperable use and transfer between different educational systems we propose the meta-modeling approach GOLEM (Graphically Organized Learning and Educational Metamodel) using an intermediary visual language the different models are mapped to. We describe the different mappings and discuss potential and limitations of the transformations.

It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

With the popularity of video broadcasting service on Internet, many significant broadcasting schemes were proposed to reduce the clients' waiting time. These schemes mostly require clients to receive video segments altogether from all channels. As a result, clients with limited bandwidth, such as XDSL, cannot enjoy video-broadcasting services. To overcome this problem, this work proposes the adjustable interleaving staircase-harmonic broadcasting scheme (AISHB), which offers a tradeoff between any two of three resources: server bandwidth, client buffer spaces, and client bandwidth. When client bandwidth is not limited, the scheme requires a client to buffer only 25% of a playing video and the waiting time is slightly higher than the optimal waiting time. In comparison with the fast broadcasting, recursive frequency-splitting, and harmonic broadcasting, AISHB saves the buffer requirements by 50%, 33%, and 33%. If client bandwidth is restricted, AISHB achieves the smallest waiting time among all currently known broadcasting schemes.

This paper introduces a novel scheduling problem called the active interval scheduling problem in hierarchical wireless sensor networks for long-term periodical monitoring applications. To improve the report sensitivity of the hierarchical wireless sensor networks, an efficient scheduling algorithm is desired. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a compact genetic algorithm (CGA) to optimize the solution quality for sensor network maintenance. The experimental result shows that the proposed CGA brings better solutions in acceptable calculation time.
