Energy efficiency is an essential requirement on future computer architectures. Thereby, the efficiency of the communication will play an important role. Within this paper, we present an energy model for a unicast multi-hop communication. The model allows to derive predictions about the energy of a future computing platform. Further, it can be used to identify which components of the system or tasks related to communication have a significant influence on the overall energy and, hence, require special attention in the design phase. We discuss how values for processing delays and power consumption can be determined for a future computing platform and present values for a target platform. The energy model is applied to derive energy predictions for this platform.

The main difficulty to implement modern image coding systems in a GPU is that the algorithms employed in the core of the coding scheme are inherently sequential. We recently proposed bitplane image coding with parallel coefficient processing (BPC-PaCo), a coding scheme that, contrarily to most systems, permits the processing of multiple coefficients of the image in parallel. This enables the use of SIMD computing, ideal for its implementation in a GPU. This paper introduces and evaluates the GPU implementation of BPC-PaCo employing two different strategies that tradeoff computational throughput and compression efficiency. The proposed implementation is compared to the best CPU and GPU implementations of JPEG2000, the state-of-the-art image compression standard. Experimental results indicate that BPC-PaCo achieves a computational throughput that is an order of magnitude superior to that achieved with such implementations with a small reduction in coding efficiency.

Modeling the performance of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is a task that has received a lot of attention and has produced a large body of related literature. Most of the times, such literature is based on analytic assumptions or computer simulations, and results not always match reality. In this paper we use data collected over a one-month period in a 50-nodes wireless community network in Barcelona to compare the experimental throughput we measured over multi-hop paths with the capacity estimated using the well known conflict graph model. Our experiments show that the model generally overestimates the available capacity, despite the availability of precise information on the underlying network graph. We also use the data to test the performance of the BMX6 routing protocol that runs on the network nodes and show that in the large majority of cases the path chosen by BMX6 corresponds to the path with the highest available capacity, which is a key feature to guarantee the maximum exploitation of the network resources.

In this study, we described the effects of image smoothing on image segmentation, introduced a method proposed by Yang et al. For removing smoothing effects (hereafter referred as Yang's method), and modified this method to solve image segmentation problems. The results showed that Yang's smoothing method still required further improvements, therefore, two solutions to solving problems related to this method were proposed. In Yang's method, the researchers only considered removing the effects of central pixels in a mask on mask calculation, neglecting the effects of edge pixels in a region of a mask on mask calculation. Therefore, we incorporated an edge mask calculation into Yang's method. Moreover, in Yang's method, distinct color masks are contained in the color components of a single pixel, which cause these components to yield differing adjustment results. Thus, the solution to this problem is to adopt a single-colored mask for color adjustments. The experimental results verified that the method proposed in this study effectively improved Yang's method and removed the effects of smoothing on image segmentation.

Policies and measures to reduce aircraft noise exposure to a tolerable level are assessed for two different types of airports in Germany. Based on a reference scenario describing the forecasted detailed flight movements for 2020, noise contours are calculated with the ATM/ATC/CNSc) simulator NAVSIM and the integrated noise model INM, then maps of the noise exposure of the population are generated. For assessing the exposure, not only the maximum noise level in built-up areas, but in addition annoyance (highly, annoyed, annoyed, little annoyed), sleep disturbance and risk of high blood pressures and heart attacks are generated and transformed into monetary values (damage costs) using results of contingent valuation (willingness to pay) studies. Then, short- And medium term measures for noise reduction are identified including noise charges, night-flight ban or restrictions, noise reducing approach and dep.rture procedures, movement quotas and others. An increase in noise-related takeoff and landing charges, introduction of noiseoptimized approach procedures and a night-flight ban turn out to be the most effective measures. However, long-term noise abatement objectives cannot be achieved with these measures. The most promising possibility for achieving the long-term noise objectives is to support the development of new aircrafts with a drastic reduction in noise emissions, e.g. by drastic reductions of noise limits. © 2015 by ASME.

Nonlinear time-series method with the help of the TISEAN Program is applied to study the chaotic behavior in physical aging of A10S90 glass accelerated with thermal annealing at 40 °C. The kinetics of enthalpy losses was measured experimentally to determine the phase space reconstruction parameters, the results being presented in terms of a comparison with naturally long-term aged glass of the same composition. The observed deterministic chaoticity (involving chaos and fractal analysis tools such as detrended fluctuation analysis, attractor identification using phase space representation, delay coordinates, mutual information, false nearest neighbors) is parameterized so as to compare with microstructural models of long-term natural (more than 2 decades) and light-assisted physical aging in As-Se glasses. © 2015 ISAST.

In all kind of information exchange, security is essential. One protection goal that has to be enforced is confidentiality. In state-of-the-art protocols, messages are encrypted before they are transmitted to ensure their confidentiality. However, incorporating novel technologies like network coding allows for more efficient solutions. Within this article, we compare different solutions for confidential communication by means of network coding at physical layer and at network layer. We discuss security, efficiency, and computational complexity of these approaches. The results allow to draw conclusions about the choice of a suited communication scheme dep.nding on the system model and the relevant parameters.

Paraphrase evaluation is used to determine whether two input sentences share a same meaning. The automatic analysis for paraphrase evaluation technology has a potential use in the area of information retrieval technology since correctly paraphrased sentences can be used as alternative input sentence in the retrieval process. In this paper, we suggest an evaluation method that is suitable for the Korean language by using morphological analysis. Using our method, we present preliminary results on how our automatic evaluation scores compare to the human evaluation scores.

This paper addresses the problem of fault detection in the context of a collection of agents performing a shared task and exchanging relative information over a communication network. A techniques in the literature is used to construct a meaningful observable system equivalent to the original unobservable system of systems. A solution involving Set-Valued Observers (SVOs) and a left-coprime factorization of the system is proposed to estimate the state in a distributed fashion and a proof of convergence of the estimates is given under mild assumptions. The performance of the detection algorithm against deterministic and stochastic faults;and when the system is subject to unmodeled disturbances is assessed through simulations. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The six Degrees of freedom (6-Dof) Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) aims to build a map of an unknown environment and simultaneously use this map to compute the location with 6-Dof poses. To solve this problem, probabilistic approaches such as Particle Filters (PF) have become dominant methods. PF suffers from certain problems (e.g. the need for large number of particles and so on) which induce high computational complexity. In this paper, an efficient SLAM framework is proposed and new ideas for each module are presented. By combining machine vision and a PF algorithm called the Exponential Natural Particle Filter (xNPF), the predicted results converge close to the true target states. Experimental results validate the potential of the proposed approach.
