Due to technology scaling, the number of processor cores on a chip constantly increases. Already today, we reach the domain of so called many-core systems-on-chip. However, this advance comes at the cost of reliability, which especially affects the communication performance of the underlying network-on-chip. Today's resiliency concepts for network-on-chip like automatic repeat request with retransmission are not feasible anymore and lead to long latencies and high network load. In this paper, we propose an on-chip transmission concept based on random linear network coding to provide high resiliency and an efficient communication in many-core processors at the same time. The concept offers a flexible and efficient computable coding scheme, which is well suited for on-chip communication and allows to exploit the path diversity of large networks. First, we use a flit-level cycle-accurate simulation model to investigate the performance potential of the proposed transmission scheme on a network-on-chip with 64 cores. Second, we propose an analytic model for random linear network coding in network-on-chip with retransmission, which is able to provide a very accurate performance estimation close to the cycle-accurate simulation. Finally, we apply the analytic model to investigate the performance potential on the large-scale, assuming a processor with 1024 cores.

This paper addresses the problem of high computational requirements in the implementation of Set-Valued Observers (SVOs), which places stringent constraints in terms of their use in applications where low computational power is available or the plant is sensitive to delay. It is firstly shown how to determine an overbound for the set-valued estimates, which reduces the overhead by limiting the number of inequalities defining those set-valued state estimates. In the particular setting of distributed gossip problems, the proposed algorithm is shown to have constant complexity. This algorithm is of prime importance to reduce the computational load and enable the use of such estimates for real-time applications. Results are also provided regarding the frequency of the triggers in the worst-case scenario. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulation.

Surface clutter can corrupt both Earth and planetary Radar Sounder (RS) observations preventing definitive interpretation of subsurface features, which are often the primary interest of geologists and planetary scientists. Clutter is usually detected by manual or automatic techniques that require ancillary information about the topography of the surface. However, this topography information is not always available. In this paper, we propose a novel method for clutter detection that is indep.ndent from ancillary information. This method uses a two channel RS system to exploit the cross-channel interferometric phase difference and is made up three main steps: i) feature extraction and theoretical phase difference estimation, ii) RS interferogram formation and iii) comparison of theoretical and real phase difference distributions. The proposed method has been validated on RS data acquired in Greenland.

In ongoing discussions participants tend to pick up their smart phones to retrieve relevant information for clarification, severely hampering the flow of the discussion. We introduce ambient search as a variant of information retrieval where a system unobtrusively provides relevant information snippets in the background without the need to steer devices actively. In this demo paper, we describe a first prototype of our ongoing research activities towards such a system. Copyright © 2014 by the paper's authors.

User profiling is an important part of content-based and hybrid recommender systems. These profiles model users' interests and preferences and are used to assess an item's relevance to a particular user. In the news domain it is difficult to extract explicit signals from the users about their interests, and user profiling dep.nds on in-dep.h analyses of users' reading habits. This is a challenging task, as news articles have short life spans, are unstructured, and make use of unclear and rapidly changing terminologies. This paper discusses an approach for constructing detailed user profiles on the basis of detailed observations of users' interaction with a mobile news app. The profiles address both news categories and news entities, distinguish between long-term interests and running context, and are currently used in a real iOS mobile news recommender system that recommends news from 89 Norwegian newspapers. Classification techniques based on Artificial Intelligence are computational tools that have been applied to detection of intrusions (IDS) with encouraging results. They are able to solve problems related to information security in an efficient way. The intrusion detection implies the use of huge amount of information. For this reason heuristic methodologies have been proposed. In this paper, decision trees, Naive Bayes, and supervised classifying systems UCS, are combined to improve the performance of a classifier. In order to validate the system, a scenario based on real data of the NSL-KDD99 dataset is used. © 2014 IEEE.

To improve utilization of resources, efficient resource sharing technique is the key requirement. Recently, Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) has been explored as a resource sharing technique for the modern Internet architecture. The VNE techniques suggested in literature, fault tolerance of connections and nodes of network has not been taken into account. Therefore, these techniques improve resource utilization but their performance is not reliable in realistic network scenario considering the presence of failure in real network environment. To incorporate fault tolerance into account while designing VNE technique, this paper proposes a method for enhancing fault tolerance and reducing delay using Non-dominated Sorting based Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). A multi-objective optimization problem is mathematically derived. The two objectives of the optimization problem are fault tolerance and delay of a network path. Modified NSGA-II is developed to solve the optimization problem. Analysis of simulation results confirms that M-NSGA-II effectively optimizes both the objectives of the problem of VNE.

Typical aerospace embedded computers have many characters in common, especially in the aspect of the design of computer architecture. To evaluate this category of computers, 3 typical aerospace embedded computers were sampled and their characters of architecture and common technology were analyzed. Eight characters of architecture were concluded, and three evaluation dimensions were proposed. A basic guideline and a practical reference value or design were attached to each architecture character. The relationship was analyzed among the final assessment result, the evaluation dimensions and the architecture characters. Any aerospace embedded computer can be scored according to the assessment model for various estimate requirements. The evaluating method and progress were illustrated through one kind of advanced aerospace embedded computer's evaluation case. The case indicates that the assessment model is clear, effective and practical. It can provide some guidance for the design and performance analysis of aerospace embedded computers.

Long-term self-monitoring of weight is beneficial for weight maintenance, especially after weight loss. Connected weight scales accumulate time series information over long term and hence enable time series analysis of the data. The analysis can reveal individual patterns, provide more sensitive detection of significant weight trends, and enable more accurate and timely prediction of weight outcomes. However, long term self-weighing data has several challenges which complicate the analysis. Especially, irregular sampling, missing data, and existence of periodic (e.g. diurnal and weekly) patterns are common. In this study, we apply time series modeling approach on daily weight time series from two individuals and describe information that can be extracted from this kind of data. We study the properties of weight time series data, missing data and its link to individuals behavior, periodic patterns and weight series segmentation. Being able to understand behavior through weight data and give relevant feedback is desired to lead to positive intervention on health behaviors.

This paper addresses the problem of finite-time convergence in a social network for a political party or an association, modeled as a distributed iterative system with a graph dynamics chosen to mimic how people interact. It is firstly shown that, in this setting, finite-time convergence is achieved only when nodes form a complete network, and that contacting with agents with distinct opinions reduces to a half the required interconnections. Two novel strategies are presented that enable finite-time convergence, even for the case where each node only contacts the two closest neighbors. These strategies are of prime importance, for instance, in a company environment where agents can be motivated to reach faster conclusions. The performance of the proposed policies is assessed through simulation, illustrating, in particular the finite-time convergence property.
