With the boom of Networks and Internet, more and more applications have an inherent distributed character. Distributed functional language can support high-level distributed coordination with automatic management of many coordination aspects, due to its features like good abstraction mechanisms, a high-level computation language, and sophisticated type system. This paper briefly reviews the features and benefits of functional language Glasgow distributed Haskell (GdH). It also compares GdH with object-oriented distributed languages. It concludes that GdH potentially offers significant benefits for constructing high-level distributed coordination.

Advances in wireless communications and networking technologies as well as computer and medical technologies, enable the development of small size, power efficient and more reliable medical multi-parameter recording systems, which can be used for continuous monitoring of patients. Through this paper we present the basic architecture and initial development steps of an m-Health monitoring system that will be used in order to monitor children with suspected cardiac arrhythmias. The proposed system will be based on sensor networks, in order to monitor a subject while being in a predefined area like his/her house; while a module based on PDAs and wearable ECG recorders will be used in order to extent the coverage outside the patient's house. The system will be based on a variable sampling rate to conserve power for the possible arrhythmia episode. The system design has been completed, the hardware specifications have been decided and currently the system is going through the development phase.

For H.264/SVC, different layers or frames have different order of precedence according to their importance on video quality and the decoding process. Network should provide more protection for high priority layers or frames when SVC stream is transmitted over IP network. This paper proposes an active queue management algorithm based on priority dropping and PID algorithm, called PID_PD, which first drops the least important packets when network congestion arises. PID_PD implements differentiated service in IP layer to provide high quality video for end user. In addition, PID_PD does not create a side effect for the performance of control system. In this paper, we use BCC (Binomial Congestion Control) as source rate control protocol. BCC and PID_PD form a close-loop control system. By using a classic control theoretic approach to analyze the stability of the close-loop system, we present a method to decide the PID_PD parameters. Simulation shows PID_PD can protect important video data well, lower the disturbance of background flow, and decrease the packet loss rate of SVC flow.

It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

This paper presents an algorithm to solve the inverse kinematics problem for a complex wrist structure six degree of freedom (6DOF) robotic manipulator. The last three rotating axes do not intersect at one point and there are off axes in its coordinate frames. The proposed algorithm based on the rotation vector concept, which is also used to describe the orientation of manipulator end-effector. All the possible solutions of the inverse kinematics problem can be obtained by using the proposed algorithm which is tested practically on the MA2000 robotic manipulator.
