This paper describes an ant-based clustering algorithms and suggests its application as a swarm art conceptual tool. The algorithm, called KANTS, consists on a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants) that represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, KANTS is used outside a purely scientific framework. The algorithm is applied to two different types of data (sleep Electroencephalogram signals and colored photographs) for generating 2-dimensional abstract representations of those sets of data. We call the images pherogenic drawings, since they are a visual representation of the algorithm's pheromone maps. The method is contextualized within the swarm art field as well as within the authors' previous works on swarm art. © 2012 IEEE.

Visual event sensors only output data when changes in the scene happen at very high frequency. This allows for smartly compressing the scene and thus, enabling real-time operation. Despite these advantages, works in the literature have struggled to show a niche for these event-driven approaches compared to conventional sensors, especially when focusing on accuracy performance. In this work, we show a case that fully exploits event sensor advantages: for manipulation action recognition, learning events achieves superior accuracy and time performance. The recognition of manipulation actions requires extracting and learning features from the hand pose and trajectory and the interaction with the object. As shown in our work, approaches based on event sensors are the best fit for extracting these dynamic features contrarily to conventional approaches based on full frames, which mostly extract spatial features and need to reconstruct the dynamics from sequences of frames. Finally, we show how using a tracker to extract the features to be learned only around the hand, we obtain an approach that is scene- and almost object-agnostic and achieves good time performance with a very limited impact in accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

Relaxing a failing query to the successful one with smallest semantic gap is the goal in Web service discovery. A schema for query relaxing is proposed based on both service ontologies and users' behavior, where the conceptual hierarchies and the conceptual distribution density of the ontologiese are taken into account during query relaxing and the conceptual hierarchies of a ontology are enlarged based on users' behavior. A failing query can be relaxed to a successful one based on service ontologies and users' behavior with progressive processing. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper describes the use of ant colony models for photographic rendering, that is, for the dep.ction or interpretation of photographic images. A description of a previously proposed ant-based edge detection method called pherographia is given in order to contextualize this paper's proposal. Then, the application of the KANTS algorithm to photo-rendering is introduced. KANTS is ant-based clustering algorithm described by a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants). These units represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, a data set consists of the RGB values of a digital (or digitalized) photograph. Two different approaches for the initialization of the environment are tested, each one resulting in radically different output images: when the environment is initialized with the RGB values of the same image that is used to generate the data set, the final result is very similar to the original photo;a random initialization of the environment leads to an abstract interpretation of the photo. The results are contextualized within previous swarm artworks by the authors. © 2013 IEEE.

Tooth bleaching is receiving an increasing interest by patients and dentists since it is a relatively non-invasive approach for whitening and lightening teeth. Instrument designed for tooth color measurements and visual assessment with commercial shade guides are nowadays used to evaluate the tooth color. However, the degree of color change after tooth bleaching varied substantially among studies and currently, there are no objective guidelines to predict the effectiveness of a tooth bleaching treatment. Fuzzy logic is a well known paradigm for data modelling; their main advantage is their ability to provide an interpretable set of rules that can be later used by the scientists. However these models have the problem that the global approximation optimization can lead to a deficient rule local modelling. This work proposes a modified fuzzy model that performs a simultaneous global and local modelling. This property is reached thanks to a special partitioning of the input space in the fuzzy system. The proposed approach is used to approximate a set of color measurements taken after a bleaching treatment using the pre-bleaching measurements. The system uses as rule antecedents the colorimetric values of the VITA commercial shade guide. The expected post-bleaching colorimetric values are immediately obtained from the local models (rules) of the system thanks to the proposed modified fuzzy model. Additionally, these post-bleaching CIELAB coordinate values have been associated with VITA shades through the evaluation of their respective membership functions, approximating which VITA shades are expected after the treatment for each pre-bleaching VITA shade.

The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are classified into three topologies such as Diode Clamped, Flying Capacitor and Cascade Multilevel Inverter (CMLI). CMLI topologies include two kind of structure that is named symmetric and asymmetric topologies. Asymmetric Cascade MLI (ACMLI) topologies consist of unequal DC sources. Many modulation techniques have been used in ACMLI topology such as Multi-Carrier PWM (MC-PWM), Space Vector PWM and Selective Harmonic PWM. The MC-PWM technique is achieved by four different types. In this study, MC-PWM techniques which are named Phase Disposition PWM, Phase Opposition Disposition PWM, Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM and Phase Shifted PWM have been compared. It is uncovered that Phase Opposition Disposition PWM technique is more convenient in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion of output voltage and current signals and in terms of the quality of power factor in ACMLI which is performed in this study. © 2013 IEEE.

During a real time control process, a set of controllers that use different control policies have been used to control the temperature of a simulated room during 200 minutes under the same conditions. All the realized simulations have been repeated five times with two different sets of set points. A quantitative comparison between the performance of the conventional controllers and the new Adaptive and Self-Organizing Fuzzy Controller proposed in this work will be performed. This latter can adapt and self-organize their internal parameters in real time using just a few qualitative information about the plant (the monotonicity sign and the delay time) and without allocate a rule base. Using all results of the performed simulations as a set of sampling for the statistical tool ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance), we have been able to emphasize the extrapolability of the obtained results (the committed error and the power consumption) and illustrate the great contribution that brings the new Adaptive and Self-Organizing Fuzzy Control policy proposed in this paper.

In previous work, the efficiency of a new Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller (AFLC) was successfully tested on a real time control process. It's to know that the adaptation process do not require any kind of offline pre-training or information about the mathematical model of the plant. Starting from a defined structure of Fuzzy Logic Controller, the error and its derivative were the only information used to tune this adaptive controller. The adaptation and self learning are done by adjusting their internal parameters in real time. These papers aim to expose and focus on the enhancement proposed by the original authors of this control algorithm in order to proceed to a series of comparisons using two different control processes (Tank level and temperature of a room) that can reflects the control performances improvement. The Adaptive controller performances are improved by giving him more freedom and endowing him by evolved tools that can strongly support any kind of unexpected changes on the controlled plant behaviors. The controller exposed here can start the control with a very basic structure, assigning (arbitrarily) one membership function for each input. Through two stages, the control algorithm starts the adaptation and the control of the plant firstly by adjusting the rules consequences using the output error then in the second stage and when the adaptation process cannot bring no more improvement, the controller starts the evolved process to get a new topology that can guarantee more accuracy by adding new membership functions in the inputs spaces.

In this paper, we present a large-scale interactive book browsing installation for children's libraries called StorySurfer. The StorySurfer prototype is developed within the Interactive Children's Library project, which includes interests from within design, research, industry, and libraries. The objective of the project is to give room for and encourage the physical activities of children, while pursuing to connect these with the basic digital and analogue services of the library e.g. borrowing and handing in books, searching for information, and providing access to a rich variety of media. In recent years, electronics and computer technology have been applied to the development of survey instruments, and the methods of measurement have widely changed. We make use of sophisticated systems in daily base such as Total-Station, GPS and Laser-scanner, to name a few. However, a system based on light wave and/or radio wave has a weakness that it would not work if the waves were intercepted. An inertial survey system, on the other hand, functions indep.ndently of those waves, and it must be convenient under such circumstances. Therefore the authors are developing a portable and low-priced strap-down inertial navigation system. In this paper, the results from the field tests are presented, which have been performed on the equipment made on an experimental basis in order to investigate how the accuracy dep.nds on the measurement strategy, namely the nonstop or the stop-and-go strategy. © 2014 ISPRS.
