The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are classified into three topologies such as Diode Clamped, Flying Capacitor and Cascade Multilevel Inverter (CMLI). CMLI topologies include two kind of structure that is named symmetric and asymmetric topologies. Asymmetric Cascade MLI (ACMLI) topologies consist of unequal DC sources. Many modulation techniques have been used in ACMLI topology such as Multi-Carrier PWM (MC-PWM), Space Vector PWM and Selective Harmonic PWM. The MC-PWM technique is achieved by four different types. In this study, MC-PWM techniques which are named Phase Disposition PWM, Phase Opposition Disposition PWM, Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM and Phase Shifted PWM have been compared. It is uncovered that Phase Opposition Disposition PWM technique is more convenient in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion of output voltage and current signals and in terms of the quality of power factor in ACMLI which is performed in this study.

During a real time control process, a set of controllers that use different control policies have been used to control the temperature of a simulated room during 200 minutes under the same conditions. All the realized simulations have been repeated five times with two different sets of set points. A quantitative comparison between the performance of the conventional controllers and the new Adaptive and Self-Organizing Fuzzy Controller proposed in this work will be performed. This latter can adapt and self-organize their internal parameters in real time using just a few qualitative information about the plant (the monotonicity sign and the delay time) and without allocate a rule base. Using all results of the performed simulations as a set of sampling for the statistical tool ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance), we have been able to emphasize the extrapolability of the obtained results (the committed error and the power consumption) and illustrate the great contribution that brings the new Adaptive and Self-Organizing Fuzzy Control policy proposed in this paper.

With a very limited knowledge of the plant (delay and monotonicity sign) and without any kind of off-line pre-training, a Self-Organizing and Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller is developed to reduce the energy consumption during a control process. Our on-line adaptive controller is able to modify and to adapt the rule base of the system by learning from the real behavior of the plant. A comparison results - based on the real electrical consumption - between several conventional control algorithms and the adaptive one is presented, this latter has been able to provide a quite interesting output signal that optimizes the energy consumption without losing the control performance.

We propose a method to automatically translate a preexisting activity recognition system, devised for a source sensor domain S, so that it can operate on a newly discovered target sensor domain T, possibly of different modality. First, we use MIMO system identification techniques to obtain a function that maps the signals of S to T. This mapping is then used to translate the recognition system across the sensor domains. We demonstrate the approach in a 5-class gesture recognition problem translating between a vision-based skeleton tracking system (Kinect), and inertial measurement units (IMUs). An adequate mapping can be learned in as few as a single gesture (3 seconds) in this scenario. The accuracy after Kinect → IMU or IMU → Kinect translation is 4% below the baseline for the same limb. Translating across modalities and also to an adjacent limb yields an accuracy 8% below baseline. We discuss the sources of errors and means for improvement. The approach is indep.ndent of the sensor modalities. It supports multimodal activity recognition and more flexible real-world activity recognition system dep.oyments.

Tooth bleaching is receiving an increasing interest by patients and dentists since it is a relatively non-invasive approach for whitening and lightening teeth. Instrument designed for tooth color measurements and visual assessment with commercial shade guides are nowadays used to evaluate the tooth color. However, the degree of color change after tooth bleaching varied substantially among studies and currently, there are no objective guidelines to predict the effectiveness of a tooth bleaching treatment. Fuzzy logic is a well known paradigm for data modelling; their main advantage is their ability to provide an interpretable set of rules that can be later used by the scientists. However these models have the problem that the global approximation optimization can lead to a deficient rule local modelling. This work proposes a modified fuzzy model that performs a simultaneous global and local modelling. This property is reached thanks to a special partitioning of the input space in the fuzzy system. The proposed approach is used to approximate a set of color measurements taken after a bleaching treatment using the pre-bleaching measurements. The system uses as rule antecedents the colorimetric values of the VITA commercial shade guide. The expected post-bleaching colorimetric values are immediately obtained from the local models (rules) of the system thanks to the proposed modified fuzzy model. Additionally, these post-bleaching CIELAB coordinate values have been associated with VITA shades through the evaluation of their respective membership functions, approximating which VITA shades are expected after the treatment for each pre-bleaching VITA shade.

In this paper we show the difficulties encountered when performing full system simulation of a distributed memory parallel system. To illustrate the problem, we have chosen a workbench that evaluates the impact on application performance of some simple congestion-control mechanism that can be implemented in the interconnection network. Applications of choice are some of those included in the NAS parallel benchmarks. Running a full-system, execution-driven simulation that combines Simics with an interconnection network simulator, we observe some unexpected, negative interactions of overlapping congestion control techniques implemented at the network level and at the host level.
