In this paper we present HotCity, a service that demonstrates how collecting and mining the interactions that users make with the urban environment through social networks, can help tourists better plan activities, through sharing the collectively generated social context of a smart, connected city, as a background layer to mapped POI. The data for our service stems from the collection and analysis of 1-month worth of collected human-physical environment interactions (i.e., Foursquare check-ins) data for Oulu, a medium-sized city in Finland, where our service is dep.oyed in ubiquitous public displays. Our analysis demonstrates that a good model of the city's dynamics can be built despite the low popularity of Foursquare amongst locals. Our findings from the field-based trial of the HotCity service yield several useful insights and important contributions. We found that the method of using a heatmap as an intermediate layer of environmental context does not negatively affect the experience of users at the cognitive level, compared with a more traditional map and POI type of interface, where temporal aspects of context are not present. In the concluding sections, we discuss how this cloud-based service can also be used in a variety of ubiquitous computing platforms. © 2013 ACM.

Large open and closed source organizations like Google, Facebook and Mozilla are migrating their products towards rapid releases. While this allows faster time-to-market and user feedback, it also implies less time for testing and bug fixing. Since initial research results indeed show that rapid releases fix proportionally less reported bugs than traditional releases, this paper investigates the changes in software testing effort after moving to rapid releases. We analyze the results of 312,502 execution runs of the 1,547 mostly manual system level test cases of Mozilla Fire fox from 2006 to 2012 (5 major traditional and 9 major rapid releases), and triangulated our findings with a Mozilla QA engineer. In rapid releases, testing has a narrower scope that enables deeper investigation of the features and regressions with the highest risk, while traditional releases run the whole test suite. Furthermore, rapid releases make it more difficult to build a large testing community, forcing Mozilla to increase contractor resources in order to sustain testing for rapid releases.

Crowded environments pose a challenge to the comfort and safety of those with impaired ability. To address this challenge we have developed an efficient algorithm that may be embedded in a portable device. The algorithm anticipates undesirable circumstances in real time, by verifying simulation traces of local crowd dynamics against temporal logical formulae. The model incorporates the objectives of the user, pre-existing knowledge of the environment and real time sensor data. The algorithm is thus able to suggest a course of action to achieve the user's changing goals, while minimising the probability of problems for the user and others in the environment. To demonstrate our algorithm we have implemented it in an autonomous computing device that we show is able to negotiate complex virtual environments. The performance of our implementation demonstrates that our technology can be successfully applied in a portable device or robot.

Very often the decline of the cognitive abilities related to age determines a gradual withdrawal of older adults within the domestic walls. Part of the problem is the difficulty in navigating in large and crowded environments that are perceived as intimidating by users with declining cognitive and sensitive ability. To alleviate this problem, we propose a walking assistant endowed with autonomous sensing and active brakes able to guide the user. In this paper, we address the problem of how to guide the user with a minimal impact on her/his freedom of motion. We propose a solution based on the use of an active braking system which can be easily accommodated on commercial walkers. The paper proposes a control strategy that strikes an interesting solution to guide the user through the optimal path without restricting her/his freedom of motion.

This paper discusses spatial degrees of freedom(DoFs) characterizations and achievable schemes for the 3-user symmetric MIMO interference channel without channel extensions over time and frequency dimensions. It is assumed that only the local channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters. We provide a constructive proof of achievability on the total spatial DoFs based on interference zero forcing for the 3-user MIMO interference channel. The DoFs and achievable scheme are presented by comparing the number of equations and the number of variables for 3-user interference channel with specific antenna configuration. Then we apply interference zero forcing scheme and signal subspace analysis approach to generalize the idea of interference management for this special case to the common 3-user symmetric MIMO interference channel and establish that the total spatial Dofs min(3 min(M t , N r ), max(M t , N r )) is achievable in 3-user M t ×N r symmetric MIMO interference channel when only local CSI is available at each transmitter.

The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are classified into three topologies such as Diode Clamped, Flying Capacitor and Cascade Multilevel Inverter (CMLI). CMLI topologies include two kind of structure that is named symmetric and asymmetric topologies. Asymmetric Cascade MLI (ACMLI) topologies consist of unequal DC sources. Many modulation techniques have been used in ACMLI topology such as Multi-Carrier PWM (MC-PWM), Space Vector PWM and Selective Harmonic PWM. The MC-PWM technique is achieved by four different types. In this study, MC-PWM techniques which are named Phase Disposition PWM, Phase Opposition Disposition PWM, Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM and Phase Shifted PWM have been compared. It is uncovered that Phase Opposition Disposition PWM technique is more convenient in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion of output voltage and current signals and in terms of the quality of power factor in ACMLI which is performed in this study.

The management of university web sites is becoming more critical than before due to the rapid growth of the population dep.ndent on the world wide web as the most important (if not the only) information source. A university can spread its research outcomes and education achievements through its web site, and consequently gain visibility and influence from the web population. Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (WR) proposed by Centre for Scientific information and Documentation (CINDOC-CSIC), which ranks the university web sites, has obtained much attention recently. The rankings of WR are well recognized as an important index for universities willing to promote themselves by the internet technology. In this paper, we proposed WRES as an early warning system for Webometrics Rankings. WRES gathers the WR indices from the WWW automatically in flexible periods, and provides useful information in real time for the managers of university web sites. If the WR ranking of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic performance, university authorities should reconsider their web policy, by promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications. Besides, the web site manages may adopt effective approaches to promote their WR rankings according to the hints given by WRES. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The Internet has emerged to be an effective platform for world universities to share their academic outcomes and to show their influence and contribution via constructing rich and easy-to-access web sites. At the same time, Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (WR), proposed by Centre for Scientific information and Documentation (CSIC), ranks the world universities by the quantity of digital documents available on their web sites and the quality of the web pages measured by the incoming hyperlinks. Therefore, WR is currently recognized as an important index and opportunity for universities willing to promote themselves by the Internet technology. In this paper, we propose a novel cloud-based information providing system for Webometrics Rankings which employs web mining techniques to gather the WR indices from the Internet automatically, and provides useful information in real time for the managers of university web sites. The proposed system is dep.oyed on Microsoft Azure cloud platform in order to give up-to-data and deeper insights of the WR ranking indicators for its users. It utilizes the scalable computation and storage capability of the cloud platform to continually gather the WR index data from the Internet. The proposed system is designed with architecture suitable for cloud-based application such that the period to thoroughly update the WR ranking data is shortened from six months to be within one week. The proposed service model provides a paradigm for constructing cloud-based service of information providing applications. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we consider the optimal motion planning problem for an autonomous race car. A competitive autonomous car must acquire environmental and opponent information to compute, in real time, the minimum time collision free path and the low level control to track the chosen path. To cope with those requirements, we first solve the problem for a car running in isolation considering the optimal sequence of manoeuvres to approach bends and straight stretches of track. We then propose a discrete abstraction to derive a problem of graph optimisation that has a very efficient, albeit suboptimal, solution. In this context, an overtake manoeuvre against a slower car will be obtained excluding from the path the arcs that could potentially generate a collision. Finally, a control algorithm is used to ensure that the car always remains close to the planned path.

The conducts to copy using other person's source codes and submit as reports are regarded as a problem for program exercises of programming subjects in universities or colleges. An automatic detection algorithm to detect illicit copies is required in these educational organizations. In previous researches, these methods based on the detection standard of the token length have been proposed. These methods use the threshold simply using the character length. In these cases, miss detections occur in the case of the simple program such as the sequence of the print statement or the case that token sequences appear in the middle of a statement. This paper proposes the detection method using the program complexity and the complete token sequence. As the results of experiments, our method can improve the recall R adopting the complexity as the detection standard and the precision P adopting the complete token sequence for exercise programs submitted by students.
