Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a well-studied area in natural language processing (NLP) and the reported results in the literature are generally very high (~>%95) for most of the languages. Today, the focus area of most practical natural language applications (i.e. web mining, sentiment analysis, machine translation) is real natural language data such as Web2.0 or speech data. Nevertheless, the NER task is rarely investigated on this type of data which differs severely from formal written text. In this paper, we present 3 new Turkish data sets from different domains (on this focused area; namely from Twitter, a Speech-to-Text Interface and a Hardware Forum) annotated specifically for NER and report our first results on them. We believe, the paper draws light to the difficulty of these new domains for NER and the possible future work.

A novel digital musical interface based on sound source localization using a microphone array is presented. It allows a performer to plan and conduct the expressivity of a performance by controlling an audio processing module in real-time through the spatial movement of a sound source (i.e., voice, traditional musical instruments, and sounding mobile devices). The prototype interface consists of an adaptive parameterized Steered Response Power Phase Transform (SRP-PHAT) with a Zero-Crossing Rate (ZCR) threshold and a Kalman filter that provides a more accurate estimate and tracking of the source position if there is movement. A real-time software based on external Max object was developed to test the system in a real-world moderately reverberant and noisy environment, focusing on the performance of pseudo-periodic sounds in a multisource scenario.

In this study, the results of the ongoing work of the authors on the topic of the analysis of the acoustical environment from reverberant signals will be presented. Initially, some theoretical aspects on the relationships of the statistical quantities of the room transfer functions and the reverberant signals will be given. Then, the way that these statistical relationships can assist acoustical scene analysis methods will be discussed. The advantage of the use of twochannel (i.e. binaural) instead of single channel signals will be underlined. Finally, the implementation details of methods for the estimation of various acoustical parameters from signals will be presented. Copyright 2012 ACM.

This paper presents a novel parts state correction method using image processing. In order to correct state, this paper illustrates the method of how to detect the hole in parts' location and how to calculate parts' deviate angle mainly based on Hough transform. This method is proved to be useful and efficient in practice. The paper is innovative in three facts. First, the matching image is a more efficient way for this purpose than the complex combination which is composed by sensors and machinery. Second, Hough transform is easy to detect the hole in the special parts. Third, this algorithm can fit a multi-purpose situation through flexible adjusting matching image module. This method can be widely used in other similar applications. © 2012 IEEE.

Nowadays, numerous daily life applications related to wireless networks, sensors, low power electronics, biomedical applications etc. demand small amount of electrical power for their operation. These applications are rapidly increasing and bringing to the fore the need for small scale electrical power generation. To this end, strong efforts are being made to exploit ambient and man made energy sources such as electromagnetic radiation including sun, infrared and RF radiation, thermal sources, mechanical stress and strain, vibrations, biochemistry etc. Acoustic signals seem to be such an alternative ambient energy source. Firstly, this work gives an overview of the proposed harvesting methods and systems derived from related patent applications during the past decade. Moreover, a first estimation of the available ambient acoustic power density is presented and then is compared to the ambient power density of the aforementioned energy sources. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Correct annotation and identification of salient regions in Kidney biopsy images can provide an estimation of pathogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. This paper presents a tool for the automatic or manual segmentation of such regions along with methodology for their characterization in terms of the exhibited pathology. The proposed implementation is based on custom code written in Java and the utilization of open source tools (i.e. RapidMiner, ImageJ). The corresponding implementation details along with the initial evaluation of the proposed integrated system are also presented in the paper.

Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solvers are used heavily in electronic engineering verification tools for checking satisfiability of Boolean formulas. Most state-of-the-art SAT solvers are based on the DPLL algorithm and require the input formula to be in conjunctive normal form (CNF). We represent the vhpform of a given NNF formula in the form of two graphs called vpgraph and hpgraph. The input formula is translated into a 2-dimensional format called vertical-horizontal path form (vhpform). In this form disjuncts (operands of) are arranged orizontally and conjuncts (operands ofˆ) are arranged *** formula is satisfiable if and only if there exists a vertical path through this arrangement that does not contain two opposite literals (l and ¬l). The input formula is not required to be in CNF. This algorithm is very important both for the design of integrated circuit and the development of electronic engineering. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Many cultural heritage institutions are confronted with a big challenge when it comes to adapting the process of registration, annotation and digitization of their collections to meet the new technological demands for providing their collections online with Web and mobile technologies. With limited funding and limited professional resources, annotation is often lagging behind significantly in terms of quantity and level of detail. Quantity as well as quality of the annotations is the key to finding relevant objects by various groups of users in online collections. As many experiments with cultural heritage data online show, human computation can be useful for collecting large quantities of data. Various of these experimented with a crowd of lay people to help with the annotation of cultural heritage artefacts. However, a common concern relates to the resulting quality. The current trend appears to focus on supporting 'the crowd' to achieve the desired level of quality. In this paper, we discuss the results of the first phase of an evolutionary system design performed in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, as part of the SEALINCMedia project. By providing personalized support to the individuals and groups in the 'crowd' when annotating museum collection objects, we also support the integration of the annotation result in the RMA content management system. The contribution of this paper is twofold: (1) requirements specification for a crowdsourcing annotation process and (2) design of the personalization functionality in a crowdsourcing annotation system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

Web 2.0 has facilitated interactive information sharing on the WWW, allowing users the opportunity to articulate their opinions on different topics. In this framework, certain practices implement information monitoring systems so as digests, reports on keywords and thematic queries regarding opinions on government decisions to be created. Analysis of rubrics associations, primary semantic and statistical interpretation of the texts is usually carried out. It is, on the other hand, rather difficult to get punctual predicts and estimate sufficiently forum users' opinion strength. In this work we present a methodology which automatically mines and estimates the strength of users' opinions on text forums regarding government decisions. According to our methodology, quantitative features are automatically mined from forum posts and then passed to a Support Vector Machine based classifier where the users' opinion strength is estimated. The proposed methodology has been validated in real data and initial experimental results are presented. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for information Processing.
