An integrated performance evaluation middleware for virtual resources in Cloud environments

With the development of Cloud computing, more and more Cloud systems are designed and dep.oyed to solve large-scale problem in the area of business and science engineering. However, few efforts are taken to address the issue of performance evaluation in Cloud environments. In this paper, we present an integrated performance evaluation middleware, which is aiming to provide users and researchers an easy-to-use toolkit to evaluate their Cloud system's runtime performance, or compare the performance when different resource management policy and task scheduling algorithms are taken into account. Massive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results indicate that its configurable feature is very useful when users are conducting performance comparing under different conditions. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. -All rights reserved.

Correct annotation and identification of salient regions in Kidney biopsy images can provide an estimation of pathogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. This paper presents a tool for the automatic or manual segmentation of such regions along with methodology for their characterization in terms of the exhibited pathology. The proposed implementation is based on custom code written in Java and the utilization of open source tools (i.e. RapidMiner, ImageJ). The corresponding implementation details along with the initial evaluation of the proposed integrated system are also presented in the paper.

In this paper we analyze and classify the work we did to perform an international course put together from two courses at national higher education institutions. We analyze from perspectives of organization and communication to identify which implemented didactics proved to be most valuable and which last. Special focus is on technical communication tools that enabled cooperation. However we conclude that most valuable communication for (later) collaboration are face-to-face settings that provide enough time to get to know later collaborators and speed up the processes of understanding necessary to perform successful collaboration.

The main objectives of this study are; i) to define variations of wind velocity and energy potential in Istanbul and Isparta, ii) to study trends, cyclic components, micro, meso and macro scale effects and climate changing, iii) to predict wind energy potential by using artificial neural networks (ANN). Wavelet methodologies present better results on temporal and spatial data analyses. Results of this paper evaluate wind energy potential, its annual and inter-annual variability, self similarity; and relation with periodic and non-periodic fluctuations of wind speed values in two study areas.

Efficient utilization of the computational resources is an urgent demand especially if real time constraints should be guaranteed. Moreover, an acceptable level of reliability should be provided due to the critical nature of some real time applications. This paper proposes a new approach for processing power reservations that efficiently utilizes all the available processing power to improve reliability and schedulability of indep.ndent real time tasks on a uniprocessor. The basic idea of the proposed approach is to use all of the available processing power in the time interval between the arrivals of two successive tasks or when an existing task dep.rts. The advantages of this mechanism are: 1) it reduces the execution time required for each task and hence increases its reliability. 2) At the arrival of a new task;the processing power requirements for the executing tasks to meet their deadlines are smaller, which gives the new arriving tasks higher chances to be accommodated with the existing ones. 3) Efficient processing power utilization may reduce the power consumption in processors with dynamic voltage scaling. An illustration example and simulation experiments showed that our approach provides a more reliable scheduling scheme with higher acceptance rate compared to the traditional approach based on Rialto operating system. © 2012 International Journal of computer science Issues.

Video loops of B-mode ultrasound images of 35 carotid bifurcation plaques were obtained (4 symptomatic and 31 asymptomatic) from patients with carotid bifurcation atherosclerosis. Video loops were classified visually as showing concordant (n=22) or discordant motion (n=13). Concordant plaques were characterized by uniform orientation of motion throughout the cardiac cycle. Discordant plaques exhibited significant spread in motion orientation at different parts of the cardiac cycle, especially at systole. We developed a real-time motion analysis system that applies Farneback's method to estimate velocities between consecutive video frames. For our purposes, we allow a 100msec time interval between the video frames used in the analysis. This approach allows us to analyze significant motions associated with a larger time interval. Over each video frame, we measure the spread of the motion orientation around the dominant orientation. For each video, we look at the spreads of the motion orientations for different motion magnitudes. Using these motion-spread measurements, we can quantify discordant movement. The sum of maximum fan widths for the median pixel motions 5 to 3 (SMFW5to3) had a median value of 100 degrees and interquartile range (IQR) of (80, 110) degrees for the concordant plaques and 270, (230, 430) for the discordant plaques (P

In this paper, we propose a method of eye detection based on skin color analysis under varying illumination. The proposed method consists of several phases, including color conversion, skin color segmentation and face mask calculation, facial feature extraction and eye candidate determination, and detection of human eyes. To eliminate the effect of lighting change on the performance of eye detection, color conversion is first performed. Face mask calculation based on skin color segmentation is then carried out to reduce the possible searching region of human eyes. Eye candidates detected using facial features are used to define the possible human eyes. Human eyes are thus detected by the geometric features of gravity and spatial centers for these eye candidates. Results show that the proposed method works well for faces with different poses and multiple faces under varying illumination. The eye detection time of 21.8 ms is achieved for an image of size 213×320 pixels, indicating computational efficiency of the proposed system. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a new method for non-blind image watermarking presented that is robust against affine transformation and ordinary image manipulation. The proposed method presents a watermarking scheme based on redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT) and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). After applying RDWT to cover image, we apply SVD to each subband. Then we modify singular values of the cover image using singular values of the visual watermark. The advantage of the proposed technique is its robustness against most common attacks. Analysis and experimental results show higher performance of the proposed method in comparison to the DWT-SVD method. © 2011 IEEE.

The mobile devices have grown rapidly with the progresses of information technology those years. The mobile devices, such as i-Phone, i-Pad, Tablet PC and smart-phone, have become personal and business tools. Those devices are specially developed for mobile users on the basis of the conceptual design of personal digital assistant (PDA) long time ago, but the scopes of the usages extend much more extensive through integrated multimedia needs. This paper proposes a model called integrated usability model (IUM), derived from the technology acceptance model (TAM), to transfer the design criteria into the design guidelines. By using IUM, the developers for multimedia mobile device can use the conceptual indicators like mobile, integration and convenience to reduce the large-scale design factors and evaluate the capability and acceptance for the users. It turns out that the developers can speed up the design processes and avoid the repeated and time-consuming reworks. A mobile multimedia device development for the integrated graphic hand-sketch tablet is presented in this paper. This development uses IUM to reduce the design criteria and then transfer the result criteria into design guidelines. This paper demonstrates the practices of the multi-demand product design as the case validation of IUM. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a new stemmer algorithm for the Persian language is implemented. It is based on Kazem Taghva algorithm. The evaluation results of the proposed method on the small Farsi document collections are acceptable. But some problems in the morphological based stemmers in Farsi language are found.
