Big Data from Space for Precision Agriculture Applications

This paper presents an approach for precision agriculture large scale applications based on the analysis of big data consisting in Satellite Image Time Series (SITS) acquired by ESA Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite constellation. The approach has been developed in the framework of the ESA SEOM - Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions - S2-4Sci Land and Water project [1]. To focus only on agricultural areas, images are first filtered based on a land cover (LC) map that is generated by updating available old maps by means of recent images. Then S2 SITS are used to analyse agricultural areas. Two macro challenges are therefore considered: (i) automatic update of LC maps and generation of agricultural areas mask; and (ii) unsupervised multi-temporal (MT) fine characterization of land plots.

We propose a framework for teaching complex industrial automation concepts with the help of Virtual/Augmented reality. Initially we construct the needed 3D models like conveyors belts, and liquid tanks to be used as testbed examples for the proposed approach and afterwards with the use of the appropriate engine and the Virtual Reality headset we create the enriched virtual and augmented reality use cases to support higher education students better understand complex industrial automation concepts. As this is an initial framework proposal, an extended literature review providing the needed background information on the status and progress of the Virtual and Augmented reality for educational and not only purposes is provided. The proposed system's architecture is in detail explained and use cases where the proposed approach can be used are presented. An overview of the IEC 61499 framework is also presented since it is the underlying framework for supporting the industrial automation concepts. © 2018 IEEE.

Quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) increases the chances of survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. CPR measurement devices with real-time feedback could assist in the provision of this. Others have proposed accelerometer-based feedback systems by using specialized cards, smartwatches or hand-held smartphones. Our group have previous proposed a system that measure chest compression (CC) rate and hands-off-time utilizing a smartphone camera with a phone-on-the-floor solution. In this paper we have investigated the possibilities of also measuring the important CPR metric CC dep.h. Solutions using smartwatches or smartphones estimate CC parameters based on the bystanders movement. However, there are no reported work on analyzing different bystanders movement during CCs. In this work, a CC modelling experiment using Microsoft Kinect is performed to measure the degree of variations in CC techniques, providing knowledge on limitations when considering digital strategies for CC dep.h measurements. Although variations between the CC techniques were discovered, the results indicate that smartphone dep.h-cameras and accelerometer-sensors could in most cases be used for CC dep.h measurement with acceptable accuracy.

An Abstract Argumentation Framework (AAF) is an abstract structure consisting of a set arguments, whose origin, nature, and possible internal organisation is not specified, and by a binary relation of attack on the set of arguments, whose meaning is not specified either. Subjective logic provides a standard set of logical operators, intended for use in domains containing uncertainty. In this paper, we define an extension of AAFs in which each argument and attacks is evaluated with an opinion, by revisiting the constellations approach developed for probabilistic AAFs. In this way, different agents can merge their opinions on how much arguments and attacks are "trustworthy", e.g., they do not represent fallacies or enthymemes. Finally, subjective logic operators can be used to fuse the belief of different possible worlds (i.e., a constellation of sub-graphs in the original AAF) containing different arguments and attacks.

A virtual reality dance self-learning framework using Laban movement analysis

The capabilities of general motion evaluation algorithms are significantly limited in analyzing the stylistic qualities and expressions of dance movement. This study proposes a novel dance self-learning framework on the basis of the principles of Laban movement analysis (LMA) to facilitate trainees in automatically analyzing dance movements and correcting dance techniques without an expert. First, a "shape-effort" feature description model was presented in this framework to reflect the subtleties of dance movement. The evaluation of body-shape performance was obtained via open-end dynamic time warping algorithm. Next, rhythm was qualitatively assessed by curve fitting, whereas effort was measured by using standard deviation. Finally, constructive instructions were generated in this framework on basis of the assessment scores of the movement of the trainees. The framework was implemented in cave automatic virtual environment, and its effectiveness and feasibility were verified through experiments. Results demonstrate that the feature description model with 23 LMA parameters can be used in describing dance movements. Multi-mode feedback with direct instructions for the problems in question satisfies the learning habits of the trainee. The quality of the trainees' movements achieves an average of 10% overall improvement by using the framework. Body-shape performance acquires the most improvement of 18%, followed by effort. This study provides a new research method for evaluation and training of dance movements. © 2017 Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology.

When predictive models are used to support complex and important decisions, the ability to explain a model's reasoning can increase trust, expose hidden biases, and reduce vulnerability to adversarial attacks. However, attempts at interpreting models are often ad hoc and application-specific, and the concept of interpretability itself is not well-defined. We propose a general optimization framework to create explanations for linear models. Our methodology decomposes a linear model into a sequence of models of increasing complexity using coordinate updates on the coefficients. Computing this decomposition optimally is a difficult optimization problem for which we propose exact algorithms and scalable heuristics. By solving this problem, we can derive a parametrized family of interpretability metrics for linear models that generalizes typical proxies, and study the tradeoff between interpretability and predictive accuracy. Ultra-low-power wireless anchor load monitoring system based on internet of things technology

Ground anchoring is a popular method to stabilize the slope. It is essential for stability evaluation to measure the tension value of anchor from installed load cell. In this paper, a wireless anchor load measuring system is proposed for continuously on-site slope stability monitoring. Each anchor load cell is connected to a MCU-based acquisition unit and become a wireless IoT end-device. This system is scalable so the sensor dep.oyment will be much more flexible than that in conventional data acquisition system. The excitation circuit, signal amplification and analog-to-digital conversion are completed by a small-size device next to the anchor so that very low-noise result can be obtained. Each measurement consumes less than 10mAs so this device can be drive only by a 55mm*70mm*40mm solar power module. Verified by almost 3-year's on-site test, it is confirmed the proposed monitoring system can continuously capture and send one measurement per minute to the cloud server without any other electric power. The experimental and on-site test results show the practicability of proposed system and its reliability of long-term measurement. It has very high application potential on real-time slope stability monitoring by collecting and analyzing the load values of all installed anchors.

In this paper, we propose a secure mutual trust scheme based on the concept of chameleon hash function, for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In the proposed scheme, the base station (BS), holding two common secrets, issues an identity to every dep.oyed sensor node. An identity contains a public data and a private key. The public data is used to present a node, and the private key is used to make mutual trust keys with other node's public data. A public data can be used in verifying the legitimacy of the node. The mutual trust key is the evidence that a node owns the related public data. At any time, or after finding malicious nodes or dep.oying new nodes, BS will broadcast new group key to all sensor nodes by multiple hopping. Following the group key broadcasting and rebroadcasting, the still-legal nodes can set new information in their public data, private key, hop counters, public parameters, and neighbor nodes set, which contains the public data and hop counter of its neighboring nodes. Based on the new information, a sensor node can make the mutual trust keys with its neighboring nodes to do message authentication and secure communicating, or to set up a secure path to forward the sensed information to BS by multiple relaying. The security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can revoke the right of malicious sensor nodes, dep.oy new sensor nodes, and work well under malicious attacking. As the result of performance comparison, the proposed secure scheme is superior to the related works. © 2017 IEEE.

Core Ideas: We comprehensively validated the use of UAS in sorghum and maize breeding programs. Temporal estimates of plant growth will allow researchers to elucidate new phenotypes. The stage of the breeding pipeline dictates the applicability of UAS platforms. The implementation of UAS is demonstrated in different crop species. Monetary and time costs should be considered before implementation of UAS. To meet future world food and fiber demands, plant breeders must increase the rate of genetic improvement of important agricultural crops. One of the biggest obstacles now facing crop scientists is a phenotyping bottleneck. To ease this burden, the emerging technology of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) presents an exciting opportunity. To assess the utility of UAS, it is important to investigate their application across multiple crop species. Terminal plant height is of great importance to maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] breeders and has been hypothesized to be useful but has been logistically impractical to measure in the field. In this study, we statistically analyzed in dep.h the ability of UAS to estimate height in sorghum (advanced and early generation material) and maize (optimal and late material) and the application of these estimates in breeding programs. We found that UAS explain genotypic variation similarly to ground-truth methods and that the repeatability of the methodology is high (R = 0.61–0.99), indicating effective differentiation of genotypes. Additionally, correlations between ground truth and UAS measurements were moderate to high for all materials (r = 0.4–0.9). Finally, we present a novel application for the technology in the form of high-resolution temporal growth curves. Using these UAS-generated growth curves, new physiological insights can be obtained and new avenues of scientific investigation are possible. COBIT 5 is a widely-used framework for implementing sound governance of enterprise IT (GEIT). Despite the existence of official guidance, there are still several challenges that we can encounter. Currently, the ISACA's official implementation solution follows a sequentially ordered process corresponding to a traditional approach, however, organizations are increasingly embracing more agile ones for managing projects where the solution is not clear from the beginning. Using the Design science Research Methodology, the authors analyse the current state of art and provide a Scrum based methodology for managing at team level a COBIT 5 programme. With a hybrid agile-traditional approach, the authors aim to eliminate some known challenges of COBIT 5, such as lack of support from top management and misaligned scopes and solutions. Additionally, in this paper, the authors present the results obtained from applying the designed methodology in a COBIT 5 programme in the Portuguese Finance Ministry, as well as inspect two series of interviews: 10 performed with experts from both Scrum and COBIT 5 areas to evaluate the solution, and 6 others with the team involved in the demonstration programme, to understand if the objectives where achieved. The article ends with lessons learned, limitations and future work.
