Traffic sign detection and recognition (TSDR) is a pivotal component of contemporary transportation systems, designed to enhance road safety and operational efficiency. In an era where automation is indispensable, TSDR stands out as a critical tool for optimizing driving experiences. This study presents the development of a TSDR model employing advanced deep learning techniques, with a particular emphasis on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Utilizing the German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark (GTSRB) dataset, which comprises annotated images of various traffic signs captured under diverse environmental conditions, we achieved remarkable results. Our CNN models demonstrated a 99% detection rate, underscoring their efficacy in traffic sign recognition tasks. Furthermore, transfer learning models yielded impressive accuracies, with VGG19 achieving 99.64%, EfficientNetB7 reaching 99%, and ASNet attaining 99.72%. Despite these promising results, we identified several limitations, including dataset-specific dep.ndencies and the need for further enhancements in model design and training methodologies. Addressing these challenges is necessary for ensuring the robustness and reliability of intelligent transportation systems, thereby significantly improving road traffic management, safety, and efficiency. This study provides an innovative architectural model for e-Health systems that aims to improve cyber resilience while maintaining high availability under fluctuating traffic loads. We examined typical cybersecurity incidents in the field of e-Health, their correlations with architectural defects, and frequent design patterns in currently operational systems. A testing approach based on our research finds those weaknesses and proposes viable fixes. In this paper, a comprehensive support strategy for transitioning from conventional monolithic architectures to microservices is presented. This change makes use of cloud computing's vertical and horizontal scalability to maximize resource utilization while ensuring system reliability. We also discuss dep.oyment ideas for the new microservices, focusing on operational resilience and cybersecurity in e-Health environments. © 2025, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Grid-connected inverters play a pivotal role in integrating renewable energy sources into modern power systems. However, the presence of unbalanced grid conditions poses significant challenges to the stable operation of these inverters. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of grid-connected inverters and control methods tailored to address unbalanced grid conditions. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamentals of grid-connected inverters, the paper elucidates the impact of unbalanced grid voltages on their performance. Various control strategies, including voltage and current control methods, are examined in detail, highlighting their strengths and limitations in mitigating the effects of grid imbalance. Lastly, the review identifies emerging trends and future research directions in the field, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to address the evolving challenges posed by unbalanced grid conditions in the context of renewable energy integration. © 2025 IEEE.

In recent years, the wood product industry has been facing a skilled labor shortage. The result is more frequent sudden failures, resulting in additional costs for these companies already operating in a very competitive market. Moreover, sawmills are challenging environments for machinery and sensors. Given that experienced machine operators may be able to diagnose defects or malfunctions, one possible way of assisting novice operators is through acoustic monitoring. As a step towards the automation of wood-processing equipment and decision support systems for machine operators, in this paper, we explore using a deep convolutional autoencoder for acoustic anomaly detection of wood planers on a new real-life dataset. Specifically, our convolutional autoencoder with skip connections (Skip-CAE) and our Skip-CAE transformer outperform the DCASE autoencoder baseline, one-class SVM, isolation forest and a published convolutional autoencoder architecture, respectively obtaining an area under the ROC curve of 0.846 and 0.875 on a dataset of real-factory planer sounds. Moreover, we show that adding skip connections and attention mechanism under the form of a transformer encoder-decoder helps to further improve the anomaly detection capabilities. © 2025 IEEE.

Outlier removal is an important step in 3D point cloud data processing. Various methodologies for outlier removal will be analyzed shortly in this paper by describing a range of statistical and machine-learning techniques. Thus, the intent is to analyze different techniques and evaluate their performance in order to justify unique advantages and limitations of each technique. These limitations and advantages advance the discussion by introducing a new approach combining statistical and machine learning techniques on a real-world dataset. It not only identifies the spatial position of outliers but also enhances the measurement precision at those specific points. This work has a lot of significance from many aspects for researchers, engineers, and practitioners. Especially in robotics, industrial processes, augmented reality, and autonomous driving, the nature of 3D point cloud data requires sophisticated outlier handling. We believe our work will serve as a reference to optimize data quality in these dynamic applications under development.

A Latent Causal Inference Framework for Ordinal Variables

Ordinal variables, such as on the Likert scale, are common in applied research. Yet, existing methods for causal inference tend to target nominal or continuous data. When applied to ordinal data, this fails to account for the inherent ordering or imposes well-defined relative magnitudes. Hence, there is a need for specialised methods to compute interventional effects between ordinal variables while accounting for their ordinality. One potential framework is to presume a latent Gaussian Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) model: that the ordinal variables originate from marginally discretizing a set of Gaussian variables whose latent covariance matrix is constrained to satisfy the conditional indep.ndencies inherent in a DAG. Conditioned on a given latent covariance matrix and discretisation thresholds, we derive a closed-form function for ordinal causal effects in terms of interventional distributions in the latent space. Our causal estimation combines naturally with algorithms to learn the latent DAG and its parameters, like the Ordinal Structural EM algorithm. Simulations demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach in estimating ordinal causal effects both for known and unknown structures of the latent graph. As an illustration of a real-world use case, the method is applied to survey data of 408 patients from a study on the functional relationships between symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and dep.ession. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

This study aims to track and categorize milk quality grades using the Logistic Model Tree (LMT) algorithm, based on the analysis of 1,059 milk samples. The focus of the research is to evaluate key factors such as pH value, taste, smell, fat content, concentration, and color, which play a crucial role in determining the overall quality of milk. The goal is to create an efficient and standardized process for sorting cow's milk, which can save significant time and resources in the dairy industry. To identify the most suitable algorithm for this task, the research team initially tested 12 different algorithms, assessing their performance in predicting milk quality. Among these, the Logistic Model Tree (LMT) emerged as the most effective model, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 99.76%. The LMT algorithm, known for combining the advantages of decision trees and logistic regression, demonstrated its ability to classify milk quality grades with high precision. The results of this study indicate that the LMT algorithm can be a valuable tool for automating the milk quality grading process. By leveraging key attributes such as pH, fat content, and color, it is possible to efficiently sort and grade milk, reducing the need for manual inspection and improving overall productivity in the dairy industry. This method offers a significant improvement over traditional quality assessment techniques and has the potential to be widely adopted for milk sorting and quality control applications.

This research aims to study, design, and develop a brain tumor classification system using artificial intelligence, specifically decision tree algorithms. The system's primary objective is to assist medical personnel in making decisions, as distinguishing between two types of brain tumors-benign and malignant (cancerous)-can be challenging, especially for less experienced medical staff. Due to the similarities between these two types of tumors, it may be difficult for medical practitioners with limited expertise to differentiate between them in a timely manner. The proposed brain tumor classification system is designed to address this challenge. The research team conducted the study over approximately seven months, starting from the second semester of the 2023 academic year through the first semester of the 2024 academic year. Experimental results revealed that among the tree-based algorithms, Random Forest achieved the highest accuracy, followed by M5P. The best average accuracy from the experiments was obtained using a 70% training and 30% testing split, yielding an accuracy of 96.83%. Therefore, the research team selected the 70% training and 30% testing split for model development, as it provided the highest accuracy compared to the 60% training and 40% testing split, and the 80% training and 20% testing split, which showed lower accuracy. The results demonstrate that the 70% training and 30% testing approach is optimal for the brain tumor classification system, ensuring high accuracy in classifying brain tumors.
