Due to technology scaling, the number of processor cores on a chip constantly increases. Already today, we reach the domain of so called many-core systems-on-chip. However, this advance comes at the cost of reliability, which especially affects the communication performance of the underlying network-on-chip. Today's resiliency concepts for network-on-chip like automatic repeat request with retransmission are not feasible anymore and lead to long latencies and high network load. In this paper, we propose an on-chip transmission concept based on random linear network coding to provide high resiliency and an efficient communication in many-core processors at the same time. The concept offers a flexible and efficient computable coding scheme, which is well suited for on-chip communication and allows to exploit the path diversity of large networks. First, we use a flit-level cycle-accurate simulation model to investigate the performance potential of the proposed transmission scheme on a network-on-chip with 64 cores. Second, we propose an analytic model for random linear network coding in network-on-chip with retransmission, which is able to provide a very accurate performance estimation close to the cycle-accurate simulation. Finally, we apply the analytic model to investigate the performance potential on the large-scale, assuming a processor with 1024 cores.

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the major existing problems in Intensive Care Units (ICU). CRBSI has a high prevalence and its treatment is quite costly in time and medication. One of the essential efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of CRBSI is the use of existing Clinical Guidelines (CG). Nevertheless, its adoption and integration into daily practice is quite complex due to the lack of software tools that cover all the needs. Considering this problem, in this work we identify some of the needs detected in daily work, and we present two tools for ICUs that makes the introduction of CGs and patient's data visualization simple. As a first goal we propose to obtain a computerized model of the clinical guideline. Gewel is an application that allows the mapping of a textual CG into a workflow model. In this tool we propose a process that (1) organizes the parts of the textual document according to GEM, (2) maps concepts to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, called CH4, so that it can automatically retrieve data and send HL7 messages, (3) supports the design of a workflow model that assists the following up of the steps and the measure of adherence to the CG, and (4) according to Evidence Based Medicine principles, allows the doctors to trace from the task or decision point of the workflow to the exact part of the document where it was originated. Once the CG is computerized and integrated in the EHR, the next goal is to identify key clinical problems, such as CRBSI, and retrieve the relevant information from the EHR. Due to the big amount of the EHR data registered in an ICU, physician's attention should be drawn to the clinical information related to the problem to be solved. We propose a mobile application, called mProblem View, that permits to establish and visualize relations between the elements of the EHR in a Problem-Oriented EHR approach.

We investigate the high peak power resulting from the transmission of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals through optical fiber. High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which is a major drawback of OFDM can make worse the nonlinearities experienced in optical fibers. Phase modulation instead of intensity modulation is adopted to keep the amplitude of optical power within the fiber uniform. To effectively combat the high peak power that results from the addition of number of subcarriers of OFDM in time domain, we apply Reduced Complexity Max Norm (RCMN) technique which is a distortion less PAPR reduction scheme. The proposed technique offers 3.7dB reduction in PAPR.

Correct annotation and identification of salient regions in Kidney biopsy images can provide an estimation of pathogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. This paper presents a tool for the automatic or manual segmentation of such regions along with methodology for their characterization in terms of the exhibited pathology. The proposed implementation is based on custom code written in Java and the utilization of open source tools (i.e. RapidMiner, ImageJ). The corresponding implementation details along with the initial evaluation of the proposed integrated system are also presented in the paper.

With the development of Cloud computing, more and more Cloud systems are designed and dep.oyed to solve large-scale problem in the area of business and science engineering. However, few efforts are taken to address the issue of performance evaluation in Cloud environments. In this paper, we present an integrated performance evaluation middleware, which is aiming to provide users and researchers an easy-to-use toolkit to evaluate their Cloud system's runtime performance, or compare the performance when different resource management policy and task scheduling algorithms are taken into account. Massive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results indicate that its configurable feature is very useful when users are conducting performance comparing under different conditions. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. -All rights reserved.

The mobile devices have grown rapidly with the progresses of information technology those years. The mobile devices, such as i-Phone, i-Pad, Tablet PC and smart-phone, have become personal and business tools. Those devices are specially developed for mobile users on the basis of the conceptual design of personal digital assistant (PDA) long time ago, but the scopes of the usages extend much more extensive through integrated multimedia needs. This paper proposes a model called integrated usability model (IUM), derived from the technology acceptance model (TAM), to transfer the design criteria into the design guidelines. By using IUM, the developers for multimedia mobile device can use the conceptual indicators like mobile, integration and convenience to reduce the large-scale design factors and evaluate the capability and acceptance for the users. It turns out that the developers can speed up the design processes and avoid the repeated and time-consuming reworks. A mobile multimedia device development for the integrated graphic hand-sketch tablet is presented in this paper. This development uses IUM to reduce the design criteria and then transfer the result criteria into design guidelines. This paper demonstrates the practices of the multi-demand product design as the case validation of IUM. © 2011 IEEE.

Operating multiple mobile robots while having finite amount of energy is one of limitation on doing a task in long term. In this work, a decentralized controller system based on inspired of swarm honeybees in foraging food's behavior has been developed and applied on the mobile robot. This system is simulated in Player/Stage. The algorithm is divided by working robot and foraging robot. The change of behaviors are based on remaining energy, which is defined as energy for worker and energy for forager. Mobile robots will be working while energy is enough and then, autonomously looking for energy source when battery in state of energy for forager. The information of position for power source energy that is getting from a forager robot will be shared with other mobile robots by local communication. In the player stage simulator, the communication process is done through UDP port. This experimental result shows that mobile robot is able to continuously work, forage, recharge and back to work by themselves without having intervention by human. © 2011 IEEE.

The requirement of high quality electric power supply from utility is a common practice today. Thus, no matter in planning, designing, or system dispatching, it is desired to give un-interrupted electric power to customers. However, when the loading of a distribution system power feeder is too high or the feeder needs to be maintained, the feeder load should be transferred to other feeder. There are two types of feeder load transferring, interrupted and un-interrupted. The un-interrupted type means that the electric power supplied to customers will not be interrupted during feeder load transferring. However, there are several factors to affect the feeder current magnitude during load transferring, such as transformer impedances, primary side power level, and original loading of the feeder. If the current is too high, the feeder protection system will trip the feeder breakers to shut down the power supply system. A novel approach is presented to reduce the feeder current magnitude during load transferring. The phasor measurement units (PMU) will be used to obtain the synchronous voltage magnitude and phase angle of the transformers, of which feeders are transferred. A power conditioner is installed in the secondary side of the transformer. Then the phase angle values from the PMUs will be sent to the power conditioner and the suitable phase shifting will be used to reduce the phase angle difference between the two transformers. The simulation results show the feeder current magnitude will be greatly reduced during load transferring. The power supply reliability is raised.

The IEEE 802.16 standard which has emerged as a broadband wireless access technology, promises to deliver high data rates over large areas to a large number of users in the near future. We present a simple analytical method for VoIP capacity estimation in IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX networks. Various overheads that impact the capacity are explained and methods to reduce these overheads are also presented. The analysis process helps explain various features of mobile WiMAX. It is shown that proper use of overhead reducing mechanisms and proper scheduling can make an order of magnitude difference in performance. The paper gives the maximum number of voice sessions using multiple VoIP codecs. Via simulation using ns2, the results of the analytical calculations will be validated using simple scheduler.
