Interference Estimation via Model-Based Deep Learning in Grant-Free Networks

This paper presents a novel approach for estimating interference distribution parameters in grant-free access networks using a model-based deep learning (DL) framework. Our method integrates the precision of analytical models with the adaptability of deep learning algorithms. Specifically, we employ an analytical model to generate labeled data, which enhances the deep learning model’s ability to estimate interference levels. Through extensive validation, we demonstrate that our approach accurately estimates interference across a broad range of scenarios, including operating regions not covered during the model’s training. Moreover, our method also estimates the spatial density of interfering nodes, making it a valuable tool for interference management in grant-free access networks. This methodology offers a robust solution for improving interference estimation accuracy, aiding decision-making at the Medium Access Control (MAC) and physical layers in grant-free access schemes. © 2025 IEEE. The task of estimating, tracking and controlling the speed of user equipment (UE), particularly with speed above allowed limits, is a challenge which has a significant impact on radio resource and mobility management in Long Term Evolution (LTE). This is very essential to control the speed and avoid traffic accidents with the help of the LTE networks application. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that relies on transmitting Channel Quality Indicator CQI bits through LTE network's to remote IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) application server to analyze and to map the UE speed and to determine if the UE is above the speed limit. The paper presents a new approach to estimate, track, and control users moving above speed limits in LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks using mapping of the uplink CQI index of the UE since the CQI range can provide an indication to the system regarding the movement and the speed of the UE. The approach can be achieved by sending an emergency warning message to the evolved base station (eNB) that sends a downlink (DL) signal to the control channel to activate a radio frequency identification (RFID) unit mounted on the car. The mapping system via the RFID sends a control signal to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), traction control (TC), electronic stability program (ESP) and automatic brake system (ABS) mounted in the car to reduce the speed if the alarm is activated to the inattentive driver. The proposed system has been simulated and evaluated using the Vienna system level simulator. The results show that the estimation of the CQI is dropped significantly to (2-3) as the UEs speed is increased to 150 km/h. Thus, with the availability of estimation of CQI at LTE-A networks, action can be made to warn or reduce the UE speed. Finally, the proposed system can be utilized in recent and future trends of controlling smart cars for long range as the 5G-Internet of Things (IoT) tries deeply to accomplish this system but for short range. © 2018 IEEE.

The demand on distribution network reconfiguration abilities is increasing. This paper proposes a Finite State Automaton model of a distribution network that deals with topologically safe reconfiguration. Autonomous operation of distribution networks can be designed, analysed and implemented in day-to-day operation with the aid of these automata: through supervisory control. Two approaches to supervisor design are proposed. One for the normal operating mode and the other for the contingency mode. Simple and comprehensive examples illustrate the approaches. © 2017 IEEE.

The upcoming migration of satellite services to higher bands, namely, the Ka- and Q/V-bands, offers many advantages in terms of bandwidth and system capacity. However, it poses challenges as propagation effects introduced by the various atmospheric phenomena are particularly pronounced in these bands and can become a serious constraint in terms of system reliability and performance. This paper presents the goals, organisation, and preliminary results of an ongoing large-scale European coordinated propagation campaign using the Alphasat Aldo Paraboni Ka/Q band signal payload on satellite, performed by a wide scientific consortium in the framework of a European Space Agency (ESA) project. The main objective of this activity is the experimental characterisation of the spatial and temporal correlation over Europe of the radio channel at Ka and Q band for future modelling activities and to collect data for development and testing of fading mitigation techniques. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

However, it poses challenges as propagation effects introduced by the various atmospheric phenomena are particularly pronounced in these bands and can become a serious constraint in terms of system reliability and performance. This paper outlines the goals, organization and some first results of an ongoing large propagation campaign consortium formed across Europe under the supervision of the European Space Agency;the campaign, shall ultimately assist in the validation and development of channel models targeting these-bands. Finally, the consideration of diverse climatic conditions and elevation angles along with the evaluation of the frequency and spatio-temporal effects, shall support the development of Fading and Mitigation Techniques and their assessment using real data.

The validation of wireless communications research, whether it is focused on PHY, MAC or higher layers, can be done in several ways, each with its limitations. Simulations tend to be simplified. Equipping wireless labs requires funding and time. Remotely accessible testbeds present a good option to validate research. The existing testbeds have gone a long way in building the infrastructure for managing and operating themselves. Yet, there is still space to improve the administration of resources whether it is nodes, frequency spectrum or storage space. In this work, we present the Collaborative Radio Cloud (CRC), a wireless testbed that enables web/remote access to facilitate research experiments in the field of wireless communications and networks. CRC is built upon the contributions made by current testbeds and incorporates new features to improve the user experience and ameliorate the management of resources. It enables multiple simultaneous users to coexist in the testbed by enforcing an elaborate node isolation policy. Software dedicated to the enforcement of spectrum assignment was developed to further ensure the isolation between concurrent users. A tool that is capable of realizing a desired topology using gain control was developed. CRC also operates a scheduler that optimizes node assignment to maximize testbed utilization. Enhancements to disk image saving are being developed to reduce the required storage. Other than research, CRC targets contributing to the education of wireless communications and networks by providing experiments and a web interface dedicated to students and instructors. © 2016 ACM.

Due to technology scaling, the number of processor cores on a chip constantly increases. Already today, we reach the domain of so called many-core systems-on-chip. However, this advance comes at the cost of reliability, which especially affects the communication performance of the underlying network-on-chip. Today's resiliency concepts for network-on-chip like automatic repeat request with retransmission are not feasible anymore and lead to long latencies and high network load. In this paper, we propose an on-chip transmission concept based on random linear network coding to provide high resiliency and an efficient communication in many-core processors at the same time. The concept offers a flexible and efficient computable coding scheme, which is well suited for on-chip communication and allows to exploit the path diversity of large networks. First, we use a flit-level cycle-accurate simulation model to investigate the performance potential of the proposed transmission scheme on a network-on-chip with 64 cores. Second, we propose an analytic model for random linear network coding in network-on-chip with retransmission, which is able to provide a very accurate performance estimation close to the cycle-accurate simulation. Finally, we apply the analytic model to investigate the performance potential on the large-scale, assuming a processor with 1024 cores.

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the major existing problems in Intensive Care Units (ICU). CRBSI has a high prevalence and its treatment is quite costly in time and medication. One of the essential efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of CRBSI is the use of existing Clinical Guidelines (CG). Nevertheless, its adoption and integration into daily practice is quite complex due to the lack of software tools that cover all the needs. Considering this problem, in this work we identify some of the needs detected in daily work, and we present two tools for ICUs that makes the introduction of CGs and patient's data visualization simple. As a first goal we propose to obtain a computerized model of the clinical guideline. Gewel is an application that allows the mapping of a textual CG into a workflow model. In this tool we propose a process that (1) organizes the parts of the textual document according to GEM, (2) maps concepts to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, called CH4, so that it can automatically retrieve data and send HL7 messages, (3) supports the design of a workflow model that assists the following up of the steps and the measure of adherence to the CG, and (4) according to Evidence Based Medicine principles, allows the doctors to trace from the task or decision point of the workflow to the exact part of the document where it was originated. Once the CG is computerized and integrated in the EHR, the next goal is to identify key clinical problems, such as CRBSI, and retrieve the relevant information from the EHR. Due to the big amount of the EHR data registered in an ICU, physician's attention should be drawn to the clinical information related to the problem to be solved. We propose a mobile application, called mProblem View, that permits to establish and visualize relations between the elements of the EHR in a Problem-Oriented EHR approach.

E-Government is becoming more attentive towards providing intelligent personalized services to citizens so that they can receive better services with less time and effort. This work presents an approach for inferring user segments that could be properly exploited to offer personalized services that better satisfy user needs and their expectations. User segments are derived starting from data that essentially describe demographic characteristics of users and that are gathered by questionnaires. A clustering process is performed on gathered data in order to derive user segments, i.e. groups of users sharing similar characteristics. Finally, for each derived segment, we define a user profile that summarizes characteristics shared by users belonging to the same segment. The suitability of the proposed approach is shown by providing results obtained on a case study.
