Dual-arm manipulation is a key enabler for significantly enhancing the interaction between humans and robots, and their capabilities to purposefully shape the surrounding environment. However, the spatiotemporal coordination between the motion of the hands required for this type of actions makes their planning not trivial. A proper definition of these coordination patterns moving from the human example could simplify their translation on the robot side, fostering the generation of effective bimanual tasks. In this work, we propose Multivariate functional Principal Component Analysis (MfPCA) as a mathematical tool to encode inter-hands temporal kinematic covariations in terms of principal spatiotemporal coordination patterns in the Cartesian domain. We compared these patterns extracted from a dataset of human bimanual tasks with those resulting from the usage of classical fPCA, applied indep.ndently to each hand (univariate fPCA). We found that MfPCA allows for a better classification of the tasks, with respect to a state of the art taxonomy. For what concerns motion planning, MfPCA and fPCA yield similar accuracy in the reconstruction of the motion, but with a smaller number of principal components needed in the MfPCA case. These results, although preliminary, can open interesting perspectives for the usage of MfPCA for human-like bimanual motion planning and control of robotic manipulators, as well as for action recognition, to enable a more effective human-robot interaction.

There is a necessity to schedule the system and user processes by the operating system to getting maximum utilization of the CPU and obtaining high throughput. This paper presents a dynamic scheduling algorithm that make use of genetic algorithm operations for scheduling multi non-preemptive task on uniprocessor system to get minimum average waiting time and average turnaround time. The algorithm dep.nd on construct fitness function that take in its consideration the dead time of process to avoid the starvation problem, in addition to obtaining maximum throughput. The results from proposed algorithm simulation by matlab (8.3) illustrates the successful of this method to obtain optimal result by giving the minimum average turnaround time for executing the given processes. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper we present a fully automated morphology-based technique for segmentation of nuclei in cancer tissue images and we compare it with a common technique for biomedical image processing, namely active contours. We discuss the limitations of active contours in the processing of immunohistochemical images characterized by heterogeneously stained nuclear region and noise caused by the presence of multiple tissue layers in the sample. We describe the integration of the proposed approach in a fully automated protein activity quantification tool. Finally, we demonstrate and motivate through extensive experiments that our fully automated morphology-based approach provides better accuracy compared to various active contours implementations.

In this paper, a robust technique based on discrete wavelet transform, edge detection, and morphology operation for scene text detection is proposed. There are several stages in the proposed method. In the first stage, a single wavelet decomposition LH, HL and HH subbands are applied for detecting edges in original scene text image. The projection technique is applied in the second stage to preliminary detect text and non-text pixels. In third stage, 4-connected components are applied, and then area geometric feature is used as threshold to remove non-text region. At last stage, morphological operations are applied to connect isolated text components and to remove non-text regions. The proposed method is applied on a various images such as images of low contrast, complex background images and images of different fonts and size of text. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect regions of the text perfectly. © 2016 The Authors

Recently, cloud computers are widely used due to the development of computing environment and network speed. Unikernel is considered to be an attractive operating system in the manycore environment that effectively provides cloud computers. HalVM is a unikernel coded in Haskell. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Haskell running in a unikernel, which has shown good parallel programming performance in a manycore environment. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Haskell running in a unikernel, while Haskell has shown good performance in a manycore environment. To do this, we select HaLVM as the target operating system and analyze the performance by testing various Haskell parallel programming models. Test result shows that HaLVM is scalable only on IVC. We also implement a library to make programming with IVC more convenient, and use this library to compare extensibility experiments. Our test shows HaLVM's scalability is 112.42% higher than Linux environment. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

As computers with manycore architecture are being widely spread, parallel programming becomes a pending issue. While parallel programming has been a challenging issue, Haskell is known to be of the best available one. The immutability and declarative nature of Haskell suit well the need for parallelism. In our previous work, we implemented the SAM, a parallel programming model based on Haskell. In this paper, we propose the SSAM, an updated version of SAM, by solving the performance overhead of SAM socket. We discuss the architecture of SSAM and its major functions and show the 14% scalability upgrade in a performance test. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In addition to its use in building and agriculture, global solar irradiance is one of the most critical aspects in designing and considering any solar station's volume. Because the Iraqi metrological organization and seismology lack exact information regarding irradiance, this project aims to use historical global data, develop numerical analysis using artificial neural networks, and forecast hourly irradiance. The test is run over Basra to determine references to their nearest places. The learning technique in this study is a forward neural network (FNN) and time series neural network. Their comparison dep.nds on seven input variables: temperature, wind speed, wind direction, sunshine duration, and date. One of the most essential integrated and impactful events for managing the system of new and renewable energy sources in the power grid is accurate solar energy forecasting. The study offers a valuable method for forecasting solar energy generation using neural networks. It is difficult to apply neural networks to anticipate PV power generation because of the unpredictability of variations in the weather;unlike traditional mathematical models, which struggle to handle complicated nonlinear interactions and provide poor predictions, neural network approaches achieve superior prediction performance. The suggested forecasting model based on neural networks provides a practical means of raising the accuracy of PV generation estimation. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we present a fully-automated method for the detection of tumor areas in immunohistochemical confocal images. The image segmentation provided by the proposed technique allows quantitative protein activity evaluation on the target tumoral tissue disregarding tissue areas that are not affected by the pathology, such as connective tissue. The automated method, that is based on an innovative unsupervised clustering approach, enables more accurate tissue segmentation compared to traditional supervised methods that can be found in literature, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM). Experimental results conducted on a large set of heterogeneous immunohistochemical lung cancer tissue images demonstrate that the proposed approach overcomes the performance of SVM by 8%, achieving on average an accuracy of 90%.

The increasing pace of biotechnological advances produced an unprecedented amount of both experimental data and biological information mostly diffused on the web. However, the heterogeneity of the data organization and the different knowledge representations open the ways to new challenges in the integration and the extraction of biological information fundamental for correctly interpreter experimental results. In the present work we introduce a new methodology for quantitatively scoring the degree of biological correlation among biological terms occurring in biomedical abstracts. The proposed flow is based on the latent semantic analysis of biomedical literature coupled with the UMLS Metathesarurs and PubMed literature information. The results demonstrate that the structured and consolidated knowledge in the UMLS and pathway database efficiently improves the accuracy of the latent semantic analysis of biomedical literature. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This paper presents a generalized direct power control (DPC) scheme for grid connected multilevel converters. The proposed method extends the original DPC operating principle by considering only for selection the closest vectors to the present switching state. This approach requires the power derivatives for feedback, which can present numerical implementation problems in real time. Therefore a grid virtual flux based observer is proposed to overcome this issue. The proposed method is applicable to any multilevel converter topology of any number of levels. In this paper simulations results are presented for a 9 level cascaded H-bridge converter. The proposed solution enables DPC for multilevel converters used in medium voltage applications while improving overall power quality and efficiency of the system. ©2010 IEEE.
