The RISC-V architecture has become increasingly popular due to its open-source nature and flexibility, making it susceptible to various security attacks, such as Stack Buffer Overflow (SBO) attacks. It is crucial to effectively detect these attacks to ensure the security of RISC-V systems. This study explores Hardware-Supported Malware Detection (HMD) techniques for identifying these security threats. Using the CV32e40p RISC-V platform, we conducted simulations to assess the effectiveness of anomaly-based HMD methods in detecting SBO attacks by analyzing hardware microarchitectural events. The findings demonstrate the potential of these approaches but also reveal significant challenges in detection performance. These elements are essential for advancing the security capabilities of HMD systems in RISC-V environments.

Dual-arm manipulation is a key enabler for significantly enhancing the interaction between humans and robots, and their capabilities to purposefully shape the surrounding environment. However, the spatiotemporal coordination between the motion of the hands required for this type of actions makes their planning not trivial. A proper definition of these coordination patterns moving from the human example could simplify their translation on the robot side, fostering the generation of effective bimanual tasks. In this work, we propose Multivariate functional Principal Component Analysis (MfPCA) as a mathematical tool to encode inter-hands temporal kinematic covariations in terms of principal spatiotemporal coordination patterns in the Cartesian domain. We compared these patterns extracted from a dataset of human bimanual tasks with those resulting from the usage of classical fPCA, applied indep.ndently to each hand (univariate fPCA). We found that MfPCA allows for a better classification of the tasks, with respect to a state of the art taxonomy. For what concerns motion planning, MfPCA and fPCA yield similar accuracy in the reconstruction of the motion, but with a smaller number of principal components needed in the MfPCA case. These results, although preliminary, can open interesting perspectives for the usage of MfPCA for human-like bimanual motion planning and control of robotic manipulators, as well as for action recognition, to enable a more effective human-robot interaction.

In this paper we present a fully automated morphology-based technique for segmentation of nuclei in cancer tissue images and we compare it with a common technique for biomedical image processing, namely active contours. We discuss the limitations of active contours in the processing of immunohistochemical images characterized by heterogeneously stained nuclear region and noise caused by the presence of multiple tissue layers in the sample. We describe the integration of the proposed approach in a fully automated protein activity quantification tool. Finally, we demonstrate and motivate through extensive experiments that our fully automated morphology-based approach provides better accuracy compared to various active contours implementations.

The increasing pace of biotechnological advances produced an unprecedented amount of both experimental data and biological information mostly diffused on the web. However, the heterogeneity of the data organization and the different knowledge representations open the ways to new challenges in the integration and the extraction of biological information fundamental for correctly interpreter experimental results. In the present work we introduce a new methodology for quantitatively scoring the degree of biological correlation among biological terms occurring in biomedical abstracts. The proposed flow is based on the latent semantic analysis of biomedical literature coupled with the UMLS Metathesarurs and PubMed literature information. The results demonstrate that the structured and consolidated knowledge in the UMLS and pathway database efficiently improves the accuracy of the latent semantic analysis of biomedical literature. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

In this paper we present a fully-automated method for the detection of tumor areas in immunohistochemical confocal images. The image segmentation provided by the proposed technique allows quantitative protein activity evaluation on the target tumoral tissue disregarding tissue areas that are not affected by the pathology, such as connective tissue. The automated method, that is based on an innovative unsupervised clustering approach, enables more accurate tissue segmentation compared to traditional supervised methods that can be found in literature, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM). Experimental results conducted on a large set of heterogeneous immunohistochemical lung cancer tissue images demonstrate that the proposed approach overcomes the performance of SVM by 8%, achieving on average an accuracy of 90%.

T Clouds was an EU project (2010-2013) targeted at improving the security and the dep.ndability of cloud infrastructures and services, especially for supporting critical applications. During the project, the participants of the consortium developed a platform containing a portfolio of solutions for improving the state of the art in cloud security and dep.ndability. Here we present an overview of these solutions and two examples of how they can be integrated to provide security for critical cloud-based applications. Copyright ACM, 2013.

The Nets-within-Nets formalism (NWN) allows to model complex biological systems expressing hierarchy, encapsulation, selective communication, spatiality, quantitative mechanisms, and stochasticity. To make NWN usable by life science researchers as well as systems biologists, we introduce a new human-readable description language able to express these same NWN model properties, at different levels of abstraction. BiSDL (Biology Systems Description Language) is derived from the VHDL specification, a standard description language for hardware systems. In this paper we chose a simple signaling pathway example to show how BiSDL enables modeling complex biological systems by separating the behavioral model from the architectural details. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper we present a methodology to evaluate the binding free energy of a miRNA-mRNA complex through Molecular Dynamics-Thermodynamic Integration simulations. We applied our method on the C-elegans let-7 miRNA:lin-41 mRNA complex, known to be a validate miRNA:mRNA interaction, in order to evaluate the energetic stability of the structure. The methodology has been designed to face the various challenges of nucleic acid simulations and binding free energy computations and to allow an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational cost.

Design Space Exploration of Approximate Computing Techniques with a Reinforcement Learning Approach

Approximate Computing (AxC) techniques have become increasingly popular in trading off accuracy for performance gains in various applications. Selecting the best AxC techniques for a given application is challenging. Among proposed approaches for exploring the design space, Machine Learning approaches such as Reinforcement Learning (RL) show promising results. In this paper, we proposed an RL-based multi-objective Design Space Exploration strategy to find the approximate versions of the application that balance accuracy degradation and power and computation time reduction. Our experimental results show a good trade-off between accuracy degradation and decreased power and computation time for some benchmarks. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
