A Gossip Based Heuristic Algorithm for Heterogeneous Multi-Vehicle Routing Problems *

In this paper we propose a novel algorithm based on gossip communication for the Heterogeneous Multi-Vehicle Routing (HMVR) problem. A collection of tasks is arbitrarily placed in a plane and a set of robots cooperates to minimize the maximum time required to visit and execute all tasks. Each task (resp. each robot) has different cost (resp. speed). The proposed algorithm relies only upon pairwise asynchronous communications between robots and attempts to balance the routing and execution cost of the task assignment through a heuristic. The proposed heuristic exploits polynomial-time approximation algorithms to solve the Euclidean Traveling Salesman Problem (ETSP). Some characterization of the convergence properties of the algorithm are provided together with extensive simulations to corroborate the results.

Knowledge-based approach and knowledge-based systems were the object of research in MENTAL project in 2008-2011. Team, in addition to meeting the project objectives, focused on the broader context and further application of the knowledge system (KS), which is presented in the article. KS is listed in Data mining, KS support for Linux distributions and KS, created by students in the classroom. The theoretical basis of the KS is Topic Maps and the technology is software ATOM2. A key activity in developing KS is the creation of ontology.

In this paper a new system is developed for autonomous robots to detect and track multi-objects in uncontrolled environments and in real time for the purpose of decreasing the processing time needed and obtaining better error rates than current systems. To achieve this, a novel multi object tracking algorithm is introduced, implemented and enhanced using multithreading where every thread corresponds to a detected motion area. The implementation considered not only objects tracking but also the object motion estimation to speed up the overall tracking process. In addition, a modified color tracking algorithm is also introduced and integrated in the built system. It is based on the HSV color space. This avoids the problems of overlapping detected motion areas. Experimental results on the built system demonstrate that the proposed system reduced the computational time to approximately 54% compared to published results and reduced the position error to less than 1%.

Modeling business process allows an organization to think about its way of conducting business while helping discover weakness in its processes. Although it is common for participants to collaborate within an organization, it is essential to define how different participants from different organizations collaborate as a community, to reach a common business goal. In this context, the realization of business processes by means of services becomes more important, providing support for separating their definition from the technologies implementing them, allowing a better response to changes. A model-driven approach for the direct generation of services from business processes provides several advantages such as reuse of the knowledge imbibed in the correspondences defined between the involved metamodels and traceability between elements in both metamodels, allowing for a better Business-IT alignment. In this article we present an approach for the automatic generation of SoaML service-oriented models from collaborative business process models in BPMN2. © 2012 Authors.

Correct annotation and identification of salient regions in Kidney biopsy images can provide an estimation of pathogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. This paper presents a tool for the automatic or manual segmentation of such regions along with methodology for their characterization in terms of the exhibited pathology. The proposed implementation is based on custom code written in Java and the utilization of open source tools (i.e. RapidMiner, ImageJ). The corresponding implementation details along with the initial evaluation of the proposed integrated system are also presented in the paper.

A closed-loop controller for rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade using the first twitch of a train-of-four electromyographic stimulation as the measured signal is presented. Central to this development is the use of a two-parameters Wiener model, previously proposed to atracurium. The controller includes recursive parameters identification by an EKF, inversion of the nonlinearity using the current nonlinear parameter estimate and a pole placement controller for the exactly linearized system. Numerical tests on the performance of this adaptive structure were carried out on a bank of 500 simulated standard PK/PD models. The developed controller steers the neuromuscular blockade to a desired reference, tracking a constant or varying profile. It is also able to deal with parameter-varying systems and works well in noisy scenarios. These capabilities are crucial when testing this structure in a real clinical environment.

dep.h of anesthesia is usually quantified by the Bispectral Index (BIS) and refers to both loss of consciousness, resulting from the administration of a hypnotic like propofol, and inhibition of pain, resulting from the administration of an analgesic like remifentanil. This paper addresses the mathematical modeling of the joint effect of propofol and remifentanil in the dep.h of anesthesia, using BIS measurements. Two models and identification strategies are considered. The first model is based on standard pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models and the associated identification strategy corresponds to the application of a hybrid method. The second model has a minimal number of parameters and the associated identification strategy corresponds to the application of a prediction error method. These two approaches are tested and compared on real data. © 2012 IFAC.

Efficient utilization of the computational resources is an urgent demand especially if real time constraints should be guaranteed. Moreover, an acceptable level of reliability should be provided due to the critical nature of some real time applications. This paper proposes a new approach for processing power reservations that efficiently utilizes all the available processing power to improve reliability and schedulability of indep.ndent real time tasks on a uniprocessor. The basic idea of the proposed approach is to use all of the available processing power in the time interval between the arrivals of two successive tasks or when an existing task dep.rts. The advantages of this mechanism are: 1) it reduces the execution time required for each task and hence increases its reliability. 2) At the arrival of a new task;the processing power requirements for the executing tasks to meet their deadlines are smaller, which gives the new arriving tasks higher chances to be accommodated with the existing ones. 3) Efficient processing power utilization may reduce the power consumption in processors with dynamic voltage scaling. An illustration example and simulation experiments showed that our approach provides a more reliable scheduling scheme with higher acceptance rate compared to the traditional approach based on Rialto operating system. © 2012 International Journal of Computer Science Issues.

The detection of changes in the signals used to evaluate the dep.h of anesthesia of patients undergoing surgery is of foremost importance. This detection allows to decide how to adapt the doses of hypnotics and analgesics to be administered to patients for minimally invasive diagnostics and therapeutic procedures. This paper presents an algorithm based on the Page-Hinkley test to automatically detect changes in the referred dep.h of anesthesia signals of patients undergoing general anesthesia. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated online using data from patients subject to surgery. The results show that most of the detected changes are in accordance with the actions of the clinicians in terms of times where a change in the hypnotic or analgesic rates had occurred. This detection was performed under the presence of noise and sensor faults. The results encourage the inclusion of the proposed algorithm in a decision support system based on dep.h of anesthesia signals. © 2012 IFAC.

The aim of refactoring is to reduce software complexity and hence simplify the maintenance process. In this paper, we explore the impact of refactorings on "FanIn" and "FanOut" coupling metrics through extraction of refactoring data from multiple releases of five Java open-source systems, We first considered how a single refactoring modified these metric values, what happened when refactorings had been applied to a single class in unison and finally, what influence a set of refactorings had on the shape of Fan In and Fan Out distributions. Results indicated that, on average, refactored classes tended to have larger FanIn and Fan Out values when compared with non-refactored classes. Where evidence of multiple (different) refactorings applied to the same class was found, the net effect (in terms of FanIn and Fan Out coupling values) was negligible. © 2011 IEEE.
