In model predictive control (MPC), an optimal control problem (OCP) is solved for the current state and the first input of the solution, the optimal feedback law, is applied to the system. This procedure requires to solve the OCP in every time step. Recently, a new approach was suggested for linear MPC. The parametric solution of a linear quadratic OCP is a piecewise-affine feedback law. The solution at a point in state space provides an optimal feedback law and a domain on which this law is the optimal solution. As long as the system remains in the domain, the law can be reused and the calculation of an OCP is avoided. In some domains the optimal feedback laws are identical. By uniting the corresponding domains, bigger domains are achieved and the optimal feedback law can be reused more often. In the present paper, we investigate in how far this approach can be extended from linear to nonlinear MPC, we propose an algorithm and we illustrate the achieved savings with an example. Integrated task assignment and path planning for capacitated multi-agent pickup and delivery

Multi-agent Pickup and Delivery (MAPD) is a challenging industrial problem where a team of robots is tasked with transporting a set of tasks, each from an initial location and each to a specified target location. Appearing in the context of automated warehouse logistics and automated mail sortation, MAPD requires first deciding which robot is assigned what task (i.e., Task Assignment or TA) followed by a subsequent coordination problem where each robot must be assigned collision-free paths so as to successfully complete its assignment (i.e., Multi-Agent Path Finding or MAPF). Leading methods in this area solve MAPD sequentially: first assigning tasks, then assigning paths. In this work we propose a new coupled method where task assignment choices are informed by actual delivery costs instead of by lower-bound estimates. The main ingredients of our approach are a marginal-cost assignment heuristic and a meta-heuristic improvement strategy based on Large Neighbourhood Search. As a further contribution, we also consider a variant of the MAPD problem where each robot can carry multiple tasks instead of just one. Numerical simulations show that our approach yields efficient and timely solutions and we report significant improvement compared with other recent methods from the literature. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The Portland International Centre for Management of engineering and Technology (PICMET) was established in 1989. It has since become one of the leading organizations in the field of management of engineering and technology in the world. PICMET provides a strong platform for academicians, industry professionals and government representatives to exchange new knowledge derived from both research and implementation of technology management. To celebrate its 30-year journey, and to show the trends in technology management research and implementation over the past ten years (2009-2018), this paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the more than 3000 papers accepted for inclusion in PICMET conferences. The study highlights the topics, authors, journals and countries where significant research on technology management is conducted. © 2019 PICMET.

Managing a large share of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources requires new approaches, which have to be integrated with existing and well-established control systems currently used to guarantee power system operation. In this context, the number of energy communities is expected to increase, and hence their effective integration is fundamental. This paper aims at assessing the role and impact of energy communities on the operation of a transition power system, still having a share of active traditional power plants. Simulation models and real hardware have been included in the experiment, based on a live real-time co-simulation. The results highlight both the significant contribution that the methodology (i.e., geographically-distributed real-time co-simulation) can give in informing and driving energy transition policies and the important role that energy communities may have in supporting the transition towards completely de-carbonized power systems.

This technical report describes two methods that were developed for Task 2 of the DCASE 2020 challenge. The challenge involves an unsupervised learning to detect anomalous sounds, thus only normal machine working condition samples are available during the training process. The two methods involve deep autoencoders, based on dense and convolutional architectures that use melspectogram processed sound features. Experiments were held, using the six machine type datasets of the challenge. Overall, competitive results were achieved by the proposed dense and convolutional AE, outperforming the baseline challenge method. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A superconducting planar motor is being investigated to provide higher acceleration potential compared to existing planar motors. Currently used permanent magnets are replaced by superconducting electromagnets, at a temperature below 20 K, providing a higher magnetic field density. Fixation of superconductors is a challenge due to the requirements on stiffness and thermal conductivity, which are conflicting in existing fixation designs. In contrast, an electromagnetic position actuator in closed loop control provides stiffness without a path for thermal conduction. The radiative heat flow through such an actuator is analyzed. Furthermore, a thin thermal insulation is required to achieve a high magnetic field density at the location of the warm motor coils. Two insulation concepts are analyzed and compared based on the remaining heat flow. First order heat transfer equations are solved and the results show the potential of the solutions proposed. A dynamic programming approach to solving constrained linear-quadratic optimal control problems

The solution of a constrained linear-quadratic regulator problem is determined by the set of its optimal active sets. We propose an algorithm that constructs this set of active sets for a desired horizon N from that for horizon N − 1. While it is not obvious how to extend the optimal feedback law itself for horizon N − 1 to horizon N, a simple relation between the optimal active sets for two successive horizon lengths exists. Specifically, every optimal active set for horizon N is a superset of an optimal active set for horizon N − 1 if the constraints are ordered stage by stage. The stagewise treatment results in a favorable computational effort. In addition, it is easy to detect the solution of the current horizon is equal to the infinite-horizon solution, if such a finite horizon exists, with the proposed algorithm. Several approaches to forecasting agricultural production have been used across the country, but they have focused on information widely detected with technology that was not very successful. Unfortunately, because of many difficulties such as climate variables (50% global fog cover) with limited temporal accuracy, the remotely detected information necessary to predict crop production was often insufficient. As a result of these problems, existing methods of estimating agricultural production are ineffective or out of date. Several efforts have been made to overcome these challenges by combining images with high temporal accuracy but poor geographic detail. On the other hand, it is this kind of situation that is most suitable for extremely large and homogeneous agricultural areas. An innovative theoretical framework has developed that explains this absence of high-quality satellite images. This intelligent method was built around this new theoretical framework, which incorporates its use of something like the energy equation to improve the predictions of multiple cultures. Many producers were contacted and data regarding agricultural production were obtained to validate the results of the smart technology. The excellent reliability of this intelligent method has been shown by a comparative contrast between projected crop yields and actual output in various areas.

COBIT 5 is a widely-used framework for implementing sound governance of enterprise IT (GEIT). Despite the existence of official guidance, there are still several challenges that we can encounter. Currently, the ISACA's official implementation solution follows a sequentially ordered process corresponding to a traditional approach, however, organizations are increasingly embracing more agile ones for managing projects where the solution is not clear from the beginning. Using the Design Science Research Methodology, the authors analyse the current state of art and provide a Scrum based methodology for managing at team level a COBIT 5 programme. With a hybrid agile-traditional approach, the authors aim to eliminate some known challenges of COBIT 5, such as lack of support from top management and misaligned scopes and solutions. Additionally, in this paper, the authors present the results obtained from applying the designed methodology in a COBIT 5 programme in the Portuguese Finance Ministry, as well as inspect two series of interviews: 10 performed with experts from both Scrum and COBIT 5 areas to evaluate the solution, and 6 others with the team involved in the demonstration programme, to understand if the objectives where achieved. The article ends with lessons learned, limitations and future work.

For several economical, financial and operational reasons, forecasting energy demand becomes a key instrument in energy system management. This paper develops a natural gas forecasting approach, which consists of two major phases: 1) it classifies the natural gas consumption daily pattern sequences into different groups with similar attributes. 2) the design and training of multiple autoregressive Gaussian Process models phase is carried out using the Algerian natural gas market data together with exogenous inputs consisting in weather (temperature) and calendar (day of the week, hour indicator) factors. The main novelty in this work consists of the investigation of multiple different clustering techniques for better analysis and clustering of natural gas consumption data. The impact of the obtained clusters, by each technique, is then summarized and evaluated with respect to the prediction accuracy.
