In this article, the analysis of electromagnetic performances and loss according to the operating ranges are conducted through the comparative study with surfaced mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine(SPMSM) and vernier PM machine(VPMM), which is classified into flux modulation pole and no flux modulation pole types. We investigated SPMSM and VPMM show different flux weakening capability at high speed, VPMM can maintain high torque due to the flux modulation effect but SPMSM was not. We revealed that high torque and power factor are related with the gear ratio closely for VPMM and SPMSM. Furthermore, VPMM with high gear ratio model is subjected to the influence of eddy current which causes degradation of the output torque and the loss of rotor core tends to be increased dep.nding on levels of flux modulation. This work details the mathematical modeling of a nonlinear multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) quadruple tank system (QTS) using the linearization principle and forming a Jacobean matrix to represent the system in a state space model. Using simulation tools in MATLAB software (Matlab /Simulink), a quadruple tank system is designed as well as a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller design to control the required liquid (water) level in the quadruple tank system (QTS).Initially, the parameters of the two PID controllers were tuned using a trial and error method, which involved setting the controller parameters manually, and the Automatically Tune the two PID controller method was then employed to tune the gain parameters of each PID controller. Finally, the genetic algorithm was used, which is a research and improvement method used to obtain the optimal values for the PID parameters. In addition, the effect of PID controllers on the steady-state response and transient response of a quadruple tank system was analysed. The results showed that using genetic algorithm-based optimization (GA) is easy to implement for both linear and nonlinear systems and that a response of a system with the presence of the PID controller, which was adjusted using a genetic algorithm (GA) with the size of population 50 and the ISE fitness function, shows the best response compared to other the classical PID controllers’ responses. © 2024 IEEE.

Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems have garnered significant attention as a cost-effective solution for reducing energy consumption in buildings due to their ability to provide higher thermal efficiency compared to single power generation systems. This study focuses on modeling and evaluating the energy consumption of an administrative building within the University of Kashan, alongside the output values of a nearby CCHP power plant. The consumption values of the university's central administrative building have been obtained using available measuring devices. Also, the validity of the modeling results has been assessed using Design-Builder software. Additionally, the study investigates the role of the CCHP system in the building in terms of energy production and consumption by comparing the building's consumption with the production of CCHP electricity and heat. The simulation results indicate that the total annual energy consumption of the office building is 182.67 kWh/m2, while the values recorded by the engine room measuring devices show 199.75 kWh/m{2}. This suggests a potential discrepancy between the simulated and measured values, with the simulated value being approximately ten percent lower than the measured value. Possible factors contributing to this variance include discrepancies in people's activity models used in the simulation software and the actual consumption behavior patterns. Furthermore, the study highlights that the 1 MW CCHP system can meet the thermal and electrical needs of a 3-story administrative building, such as the central administrative building of the University of Kashan, while also being able to supply excess electrical energy to the grid. This underscores the potential of CCHP systems in effectively addressing energy demands in buildings. © 2024 IEEE.

The field of risk-constrained reinforcement learning (RCRL) has been developed to effectively reduce the likelihood of worst-case scenarios by explicitly handling risk-measure-based constraints. However, the nonlinearity of risk measures makes it challenging to achieve convergence and optimality. To overcome the difficulties posed by the nonlinearity, we propose a spectral risk measure-constrained RL algorithm, spectral-risk-constrained policy optimization (SRCPO), a bilevel optimization approach that utilizes the duality of spectral risk measures. In the bilevel optimization structure, the outer problem involves optimizing dual variables derived from the risk measures, while the inner problem involves finding an optimal policy given these dual variables. The proposed method, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to guarantee convergence to an optimum in the tabular setting. Furthermore, the proposed method has been evaluated on continuous control tasks and showed the best performance among other RCRL algorithms satisfying the constraints. In this paper, there will be presented the design and implementation of the Remote Laboratory (RL) of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU). It will be also presented the hardware which is used and the software running on the RL. Additionally, the paper will present the technologies of the RL used for interconnection with learning platforms and learning analytics, according to the IEEE 1876-2019 standard. The IEEE 1876-2019 standard provides the framework for the design and implementation of RL with learning systems, but not how they can be used in a pedagogical way. So, in this presentation we will address the research question of how the RL can be used in a course of an LMS, which to the best of our knowledge is not presented in other relevant works. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Grid-connected inverters play a pivotal role in integrating renewable energy sources into modern power systems. However, the presence of unbalanced grid conditions poses significant challenges to the stable operation of these inverters. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of grid-connected inverters and control methods tailored to address unbalanced grid conditions. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamentals of grid-connected inverters, the paper elucidates the impact of unbalanced grid voltages on their performance. Various control strategies, including voltage and current control methods, are examined in detail, highlighting their strengths and limitations in mitigating the effects of grid imbalance. Lastly, the review identifies emerging trends and future research directions in the field, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to address the evolving challenges posed by unbalanced grid conditions in the context of renewable energy integration. © 2025 IEEE.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a research area that involves wearable devices integrating inertial and/or physiological sensors to classify human actions and status across various application domains, such as healthcare, sports, industry, and entertainment. However, executing HAR algorithms on remote devices or the cloud can lead to issues such as latency, bandwidth requirements, and energy consumption. Transitioning towards Edge HAR can be a more effective and versatile solution, overcoming the challenges of traditional HAR techniques. We present a novel HAR model for computation on edge devices: we design a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) Deep Learning approach and compare its performance with cloud-computing HAR models. The paper is accompanied by a self-collected dataset. The experiments on this dataset demonstrate that the proposed edge computing model achieves promising results (\geq 92 %) in terms of Precision, Recall, and Fl-score. Furthermore, the model exhibits significantly reduced latency, with only 117 ms, and utilizes minimal memory, with a peak of 18.8 Kb RAM and 956 Kb Flash memory. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we explore the problem of automatic detection of dangerous or distracted driving using multi-modal cameras. A deep convolutional model with Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) layers for classification on the Driver Anomaly Detection (DAD) dataset is proposed. The key features are the limited use of 3D convolutions and the replacement of 2D convolutions with dep.h-wise separable convolutions, which reduce the computational complexity of the model to a small fraction of previous architectures with a small decrease in AUC performance. In addition, the threshold for binary classification between safe and distracted driving is adaptively estimated through the training data. Finally, an ensemble of all multi-modal inputs yields the final classification with favourable performance. © 2023 IEEE.

Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) is one important vital sign to be monitored in individuals, whose health is fragile, such as the elderly. Contactless SpO2 monitoring using RGB cameras has been already developed with satisfactory results. This work explores the case of achieving an acceptable level of performance, when the lightning conditions are not optimal, particularly during night time, by processing solely infrared low-cost camera recordings. The Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) technique was used to enhance the subtle differences in skin pixel intensity in the facial area. Two approaches were explored for performing regression: one using 12 novel features extracted from the amplified photoplethysmography (PPG) signal and Generalized Additive Models and a second using a 3D Convolution Neural Network (CNN) architecture on the raw amplified forehead video. The root mean square error in the estimated SpO2 levels using both methods is minimal and in the accepted range for these applications. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes using star-delta and star-series connection modes in three-phase dual-winding squirrelcage induction motors to have available 100% and 55% of the original rated power for a given supply line-to-line voltage. The connection mode can be changed on a nine-terminal block. The experimental results obtained with a commercial 4-kW, 400-V, 50-Hz, 4-pole induction motor whose stator windings were redesigned to provide 4-kW and 2.2-kW output powers are presented and validate the proposed solution. Two-rated-power motors with the proposed output power ratio could be used as spare motors to replace faulty/damaged motors with the same frame size. The proposed solution allows fine-tuning the motor power to the actual maximum power required by the driven application/load and can be considered cost-effective as it may lead to significant gains in the motor efficiency and power factor when the low-power mode is adopted. In many cases, it may avoid the underloaded operation of induction motors, while keeping their original rated power available. © 2024 IEEE.
