This paper focuses on state estimation of DC-DC converters in the presences of a biased duty-cycle which is very common in practice. It is shown that the commonly used Proportional (P-) observer fails to estimate the state of the converter when an unknown biased duty-cycle is present. To address this issue, a Proportional-Integral (PI-) observer is proposed, and its design is formulated as a H ∞ /L 2 problem. A sufficient condition is derived by using the Lyapunov stability theorem and linear-matrix-inequality (LMI) design tool, guaranteeing the convergence of the observer's estimation error. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed technique is verified and is compared with the P-observer observer through an experimental test on a step-down buck converter.

Modeling the dep.ndencies among multiple temporal attributes derived from integrated healthcare databases represents an unprecedented opportunity to support medical and administrative decisions. However, existing predictive models are not yet able to successfully anticipate health conditions based on multiple (sparse) time sequences derived from repositories of health-records. To tackle this problem, we propose new predictive models able to learn from an expressive temporal structure, a time-enriched itemset sequence, which captures both temporal and cross-attribute dep.ndencies. Revised pattern-based models and hidden Markov models are proposed to address the properties of the target integrative temporal structures. The conducted experiments hold evidence for the utility and accuracy of the proposed predictive models to anticipate health conditions, such as the need for surgeries.

The subject of the present work is the design, the testing and the implementation of a biodegradable and biocompatible pressure sensor that can be swallowed or implanted in the human body. It has to be biodegradable, at least in part, biocompatible and small in the size. The biodegradable polymer used (Polycaprolactone, PCL) and the technique of printing gold (200-400 nm thick) on it have played a key role throughout the project. PCL was used both as substrate, on which all connections for discrete surface mount devices were printed, and for fabricating the pressure sensitive devices. A possible implementation for gastroenterology is presented. The final implementation fully satisfies the design specifications of biodegradability and biocompatibility, high operating frequency, high frequency sensitivity to changes in capacitance and size minimization.

In this paper we present a combined Time-of-Flight (ToF) and Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) localization approach suitable for shallow underwater monitoring applications such as harbor monitoring. Our localization approach combines one-way ranging and DoA estimation to calculate both position and time-synchronization of the blind-node. We will show that using this localization approach, we are able to reduce the number of reference nodes required to perform localization. By combining ToF and DoA, our approach is also capable of tracking and positioning of sound sources under water. We evaluate our approach through both simulation and underwater experiments in a ten meter deep dive-center (which has many similarities with our target application in terms of dep.h and reflection). Measurements taken at the dive-center show that this environment is highly reflective and resembles a shallow water harbor environment. Positioning results using the measured Time-of-Arrival (ToA) and DoA indicate that the DoA approach outperforms the ToF approach in our setup. Investigation of the DoA and ToF measurement error distributions, however, indicate the ToF-based localization approach has a higher precision. Shown is that both ToF and DoA and the combined approach achieve sub-meter positional accuracy in the test environment. Using the error distributions derived from the measurement in the dive-center, we run simulations of the same setup. Results from the simulation indicate ToF is more accurate than DoA positioning. Also in simulation all approaches achieve sub-meter accuracy.

In mountain areas, soil moisture is a key parameter for both agricultural management and natural hazard support. This paper presents an approach for retrieval of soil moisture content (SMC) from different satellite sensors with a specific focus on mountain areas. The experimental analysis was carried out on images acquired over the Sudtirol/Alto Adige Province (Italy) during 2010-2011 from the RADARSAT2 in quad-pol mode and Envisat ASAR in Wide Swath mode in VV polarization. The methodology for soil moisture retrieval is based on the Support Vector Regression (SVR) method specifically trained to be able to consider topographic effects of the mountain areas. The comparison with ground measurements collected during field campaigns indicates an RMSE value of around 5% of SMC% while the comparison with fixed ground stations reports an error of around 9% of SMC%. Comparing RADARSAT2 and ASAR SMC, both datasets reveal very similar distributions of SMC values. The cumulative histogram curve for the two datasets shows a slight underestimation of SMC in the ASAR product. This could be ascribed to the reduced resolution of ASAR WS and the use of VV polarization.

Through this work we had created a platform that will support the emergency health care procedures starting from an emergency call until a patient is transferred to a central hospital. The platform consists of a) a system that supports emergency dispatch protocols, b) data recording and workflow management of ambulance dep.rtment and c) an emergency telemedicine system which can support patient handling from expert personnel. Technically the system is finished and is currently under technical verification process before moving to a clinical pilot phase.

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the major existing problems in Intensive Care Units (ICU). CRBSI has a high prevalence and its treatment is quite costly in time and medication. One of the essential efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of CRBSI is the use of existing Clinical Guidelines (CG). Nevertheless, its adoption and integration into daily practice is quite complex due to the lack of software tools that cover all the needs. Considering this problem, in this work we identify some of the needs detected in daily work, and we present two tools for ICUs that makes the introduction of CGs and patient's data visualization simple. As a first goal we propose to obtain a computerized model of the clinical guideline. Gewel is an application that allows the mapping of a textual CG into a workflow model. In this tool we propose a process that (1) organizes the parts of the textual document according to GEM, (2) maps concepts to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, called CH4, so that it can automatically retrieve data and send HL7 messages, (3) supports the design of a workflow model that assists the following up of the steps and the measure of adherence to the CG, and (4) according to Evidence Based Medicine principles, allows the doctors to trace from the task or decision point of the workflow to the exact part of the document where it was originated. Once the CG is computerized and integrated in the EHR, the next goal is to identify key clinical problems, such as CRBSI, and retrieve the relevant information from the EHR. Due to the big amount of the EHR data registered in an ICU, physician's attention should be drawn to the clinical information related to the problem to be solved. We propose a mobile application, called mProblem View, that permits to establish and visualize relations between the elements of the EHR in a Problem-Oriented EHR approach.

The alternative electromagnetic (EM) fields radiating from a ship are widely recognized as new contributors to the application of underwater target detection. This paper focuses on the estimation of this extremely low frequency (ELF) signature from a fuzzy fusion enhancement aspect. Firstly, the ELF signature estimation problem is expanded to a fuzzy credibility solution issue, and a generalized multi-attribute fuzzy vector which represents each frequency points' line spectrum characteristic is obtained by a statistical procedure on sensor's instantaneous spectral analysis. Then, the fuzzy fusion method is applied to obtain the credible degree of each frequency point to be an ELF. Finally, threshold is set to extract ship's truly ELF signature with largest likelihood and shield interference of the noise ELF signature. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has particular advantage in remote target detection.

Multihoming is among the features of SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol), which makes it more robust and efficient than TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)but more vulnerable under attack. Nevertheless, a strong security can degrade the QoS(Quality of Service) by adding additional delay. Therefore, we propose in this paper, a secure authentication protocol that supports the establishment of multiple connections to protect multihoming networks with the least number of messages, number of parameters in each message and number of communicating nodes. The proposed scheme provides lower delay of authentication and protects against several attacks. Our devised protocol is analyzed using SPAN (Security Protocol Animator) for AVISPA (Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications) tool. The obtained validation results show that the scheme is safe.

Increasing of Java Scripts of malware requires automatic malware detection systems in these days. Our research takes note of the appearence probability and the state transition probability of first order Markov source for both of malware Java Script and other Java Script. The preexperiments found statistical significance. We propose the malware detection method using Mahalanobis-distance with the probability variable of the appearance probability of characters and the probability variable of state transition probability of first order Markov source. As the results of experiments, the method of combining two probability variables proved the effectiveness compared to the method using single probability variable.
