Network optimization especially in power industry is one of the main goals of system engineering. It not only reduces the cost of the system but also improves its stability. Among various methods of optimal control of power networks, like Linear Optimal Control (LOC), a model-based adaptive optimal method has been presented here which can also be used in multi machines systems with multimode high and low-frequency oscillations; although this paper only addresses linear and reduced machine-order equations which are derived from an equivalent system with an infinite-bus and a line. In this paper a model for the machine and the network is first presented and then by definitions of reference model and errors, these errors will be tend to zero in an optimal way, so that the system actually tracks the reference model. This method will be seen to be a general one and is applicable both in high and low frequencies.

The growing design complexity of today's embedded real-time systems requires new techniques aiming the raising of the abstraction level since earlier stages of design in order to deal with such complexity in a suitable way. This paper reports a case study, which provides an assessment of two well-know high-level paradigms, namely Aspect- (AO) and Object-Oriented (OO) Paradigms. Concepts of both paradigms were applied at modeling phase of a Distributed Embedded Real-Time System (DERTS). The handling of DERTS’ functional and non-functional requirements (at modeling level) using AO and OO concepts is discussed. Both paradigms are compared using of a set of software engineering metrics, which were adapted to be applied at modeling level. The presented results show the suitability of each paradigm for DERTS specification in terms of reusability quality of model elements.

Noise signals are often encountered in several science and engineering fields. They can be originated by a lot of different mechanisms, some of which are still not sufficiently understood. Since reliability and performance of many systems dep.nd on their noise sensitivity and noise rejection capability, suitable noise sources are required to lead appropriate tests to investigate the behavior of the same systems in the presence of noise. At present, only white noise sources are available on the market. Technicians that need to generate colored noise could use arbitrary waveform generators as noise sources;but, they will barely find application notes that support them in this challenging task. This work presents tutorial notes related to the simulation of colored noise, in particular of composite-power-law noise, and proposes an analog generator that exploits an arbitrary waveform generator as noise source.

Biophotonic imaging can be used to characterize tumor growth in animal models. Estimation of the numbers and location of target cells is dep.ndent on accurate segmentation of a target region from the background luminescence of the animal body. Existing software systems extract general regions of interest in complex images but can fail to detect details or faint regions of interest in the presence of higher luminescent activity. Limited work has been published in the analysis of these images. We explore the use of popular medical image segmentation techniques in segmentation of bioluminescence images. The ability of each algorithm in detecting regions of interest is tested using established performance measures. Based on the characteristics of bioluminescence images of animal tumor models, and the performance of the algorithms, we formulate a framework for segmentation techniques best suited for this application.

This paper discusses different formal models to represent educational processes and their use by computer systems. Currently most of these models are tied to specific application scenarios and tools, which reduces the transferability and re-usability of these models in different contexts. To achieve the interoperable use and transfer between different educational systems we propose the meta-modeling approach GOLEM (Graphically Organized Learning and Educational Metamodel) using an intermediary visual language the different models are mapped to. We describe the different mappings and discuss potential and limitations of the transformations.

In this paper, we present a large-scale interactive book browsing installation for children's libraries called StorySurfer. The StorySurfer prototype is developed within the Interactive Children's Library project, which includes interests from within design, research, industry, and libraries. The objective of the project is to give room for and encourage the physical activities of children, while pursuing to connect these with the basic digital and analogue services of the library e.g. borrowing and handing in books, searching for information, and providing access to a rich variety of media.
