In this paper we propose the use of a time-varying multivariate estimator based on the Partial Directed Coherence (PDC), a frequency-domain estimator able to describe interactions between cortical areas in terms of the concept of Granger causality. Time-varying PDC was obtained by the adaptive recursive fit of an MVAR model with time-dep.ndent parameters, by means of a generalized recursive least-square (RLS) algorithm, taking into consideration a set of EEG epochs. Such estimator is able to follow rapid changes in the connectivity between cortical areas during an experimental task. We provide an application to the cortical estimations obtained from high resolution EEG data, recorded from a group of healthy subject during a combined foot-lips movement, and from a patient with Spinal Cord Injury during the attempt to move the paralysed limb. Normal subjects and the SCI patient exhibit similar cortical networks, although certain differences between the time evolution of connectivity strengths between the primary foot and lips areas arose. © 2007 IEEE.

It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

Recent improvements in high-throughput genotyping technology make possible genome-wide association studies and status prediction (classification) for common complex diseases. This paper addresses three challenges commonly facing such studies: (i) searching an enormous amount of possible gene interactions, (ii) validating reproducibility of associations and (iii) reliably predicting disease status. These challenges have been traditionally addressed in statistics while here we apply computational approaches -optimization and cross-validation. A complex risk factor is modeled as a subset of SNP's with specified alleles and the optimization formulation asks for the one with the maximum odds ratio. When searching for disease associated risk factor, we show that greedy heuristics are much faster and lead to significantly better solutions than exhaustive heuristics in a reasonable amount of time. We propose a novel randomized complimentary greedy search method that is advantageous to the previously best search method. To measure and compare ability of search methods to find reproducible risk factors, we propose to apply a cross-validation scheme usually used for prediction validation. The proposed heuristic association search methods promise better reproducibility than exhaustive searches. We then show that k-fold cross-validation is more reliable than leave-one-out cross-validation for disease status prediction methods since it captures overtraining effect. We have applied known search methods with proposed enhancements as well as status prediction methods (based on these search methods) to real case-control studies for several diseases (Chron's disease, autoimmune disorder, tick-born encephalitis, lung cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis). 2-and 3-fold cross-validations show that the new methods find strongly associated risk factors and reliably predict disease status for considered case-control studies.

Advances in wireless communications and networking technologies as well as computer and medical technologies, enable the development of small size, power efficient and more reliable medical multi-parameter recording systems, which can be used for continuous monitoring of patients. Through this paper we present the basic architecture and initial development steps of an m-Health monitoring system that will be used in order to monitor children with suspected cardiac arrhythmias. The proposed system will be based on sensor networks, in order to monitor a subject while being in a predefined area like his/her house; while a module based on PDAs and wearable ECG recorders will be used in order to extent the coverage outside the patient's house. The system will be based on a variable sampling rate to conserve power for the possible arrhythmia episode. The system design has been completed, the hardware specifications have been decided and currently the system is going through the development phase.

Cluster computing systems are currently used to execute high performance applications that exhibit real time characteristics. A high-speed communication networks are used to interconnect the nodes of a cluster. Also, special software is used to allocate and manage the execution of the parallel tasks of the applications on cluster's processors to satisfy real-time requirements and achieve high throughput. In this paper, we present a new algorithm to allocate tasks ' workloads in a way that improves the utilization of each cluster's processor. Consequently, a cluster's processor can accept more tasks and results in higher throughput. The idea of the algorithm dep.nds on assigning a variable processing power to the task under consideration to satisfy its deadline instead of rejecting it if a constant processing power cannot be guaranteed. Simulation results reveal that the acceptance rate of submitted tasks to a cluster's processor using the new approach is superior to previous approaches. © 2006 IEEE.

This RFID technology has brought a revolution in data collection, thus putting forward real time constraints in middleware architectural design. This paper introduces Complex Event Processing, an emerging technology for building and managing information systems, to discover, understand and report the meaningful events within processing streams. It discusses core principles for middleware to apply for the real time actions and the implementation of these principles through technologies such as Event Processing Language (EPL), caching strategy and active database. Moreover, the CEP-oriented middleware architecture is based on the latest Application Level Event (ALE) Specification from EPCglobal. © 2006 IEEE.

There is nowadays a wide recognition that low coupling is a main tenet in the measurement of high-quality modular software. In fact, coupling is one of the few internal software attributes that has been both theoretically and empirically shown to have a large impact on a variety of external software qualities, such as reusability, maintainability, evolvability and testability. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is an emerging technique that advocates enhanced modularization of certain widely-scoped system properties, the so-called crosscutting concerns. However, there is a poor common understanding of coupling in the context of AOP. Most of the existing metrics and assessment frameworks concentrate on the coupling evaluation of the AspectJ programming language. In addition, they took their own particular view of what coupling means in this particular language. This paper presents the definition of a generic coupling framework that takes into account both AspectJ and CaesarJ, two representatives of the most well-known families of available AOP languages. The current version of the proposed framework allows for the definition of different coupling metrics, which in turn permits the analysis and comparison of Java, AspectJ and CaesarJ implementations. We also illustrate how the framework can be applied to the characterization of existing coupling metrics. Copyright 2006 ACM.

It has become a trend to integrate automatic industries via Internet and wireless applications over network. Along with the advancement of technology development, research on wireless applications and remote control has become significant and popular today. Thus, we have designed and implemented a teaching platform with wireless applications and remote control using GSM system in the Mobile-PLC (M-PLC) control lab. The integration of the mobile control and measurement using the GSM Short Message Service (SMS) provides a teaching platform where students can learn anytime and anywhere. We can monitor machine operations using GSM system. The usability and economy of teaching media is apt, since cell phones are cheap, easy to operate and portable. © 2006 IEEE.
