The complexity of current mixed software/hardware custom digital systems, has led to the requirement for automated high-level synthesis of the system from abstract, executable specifications, in order to drastically reduce the long development cycles. This paper introduces an approach to validate the hardware compilation process of a formal, high-level synthesizer, using provably-correct logic programming and XML schema techniques via an intelligent inference engine. The XML schema definition model is automatically generated from a formal intermediate format which forms the basis of connection and data exchange between the front-end and the back-end phases of the hardware compiler. The proposed methodology and the prototype tools are evaluated with results from real life applications such as graphics applications and an MPEG video compression engine. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, a statistical learning approach to spatial context exploitation for semantic image analysis is presented. The proposed method constitutes an extension of the key parts of the authors' previous work on spatial context utilization, where a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was introduced for exploiting fuzzy directional relations after performing an initial classification of image regions to semantic concepts using solely visual information. In the extensions reported in this work, a more elaborate approach is followed during the spatial knowledge acquisition and modeling process. Additionally, the impact of every resulting spatial constraint on the final outcome is adaptively adjusted. Experimental results as well as comparative evaluation on three datasets of varying complexity in terms of the total number of supported semantic concepts demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

Various approaches to control aeroelastic wing section with structural nonlinearity emerged in the last years. One of the approaches is based on the Tensor Product (TP) model transformation and the feasibility test of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) under the Parallel Distributed Compensation framework. The main contribution of this paper is that it extends the previously established qLPV model of the aeroelastic wing section with nonlinear friction. It is proven that the extended model can be exactly described after TP type polytopic decomposition. The qLPV model of the aeroelastic wing section with Coulomb friction was transformed to TP type polytopic model form for which LMI based controller was designed. The designed controller is compared to controllers of other authors dealing with the same problem.

In this paper, a motion-based approach for detecting highlevel semantic events in video sequences is presented. Its main characteristic is its generic nature, i.e. it can be directly applied to any possible domain of concern without the need for domain-specific algorithmic modifications or adaptations. For realizing event detection, the video is initially segmented into shots and for every resulting shot appropriate motion features are extracted at fixed time intervals, thus forming a motion observation sequence. Then, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are employed for associating each shot with a semantic event based on its formed observation sequence. Regarding the motion feature extraction procedure, a new representation for providing local-level motion information to HMMs is presented, while motion characteristics from previous frames are also exploited. The latter is based on the observation that motion information from previous frames can provide valuable cues for interpreting the semantics present in a particular frame. Experimental results as well as comparative evaluation from the application of the proposed approach in the domains of tennis and news broadcast video are presented. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Quantum computing algorithms are considered for several problems in graph theory. Classical algorithms involve searching over some space for finding the minimal spanning tree problem in a graph. We modify classical Prim's algorithm and replace quantum search instead of classical search, of which it will lead to more efficient algorithm. Also we we proposed the structure for non-classical algorithms and design the various phases of the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm for classical and quantum parts. Finally, we represent the result of implementing and simulating Prim's algorithm in the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm.

In this paper, four individual approaches to region classification for knowledge-assisted semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. All of the examined approaches realize knowledge-assisted analysis via implicit knowledge acquisition, i.e. are based on machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Self Organizing Maps (SOMs), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Under all examined approaches, each image is initially segmented and suitable low-level descriptors are extracted for every resulting segment. Then, each of the aforementioned classifiers is applied to associate every region with a predefined high-level semantic concept. An appropriate evaluation framework has been employed for the comparative evaluation of the above algorithms under varying experimental conditions. ©2008 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks are comprised of a vast number of ultra-small autonomous computing, communication and sensing devices, with restricted energy and computing capabilities, that co-operate to accomplish a large sensing task. Such networks can be very useful in practice, e.g. in the local monitoring of ambient conditions and reporting them to a control center. In this paper we propose a distributed group key establishment protocol that uses mobile agents (software) and is particularly suitable for energy constrained, dynamically evolving ad-hoc networks. Our approach totally avoids the construction and the maintenance of a distributed structure that reflects the topology of the network. Moreover, it trades-off complex message exchanges by performing some amount of additional local computations in order to be applicable at dense and dynamic sensor networks. The extra computations are simple for the devices to implement and are evenly distributed across the participants of the network leading to good energy balance. We evaluate the performance of our protocol in a simulated environment and compare our results with existing group key establishment protocols. The security of the protocol is based on the Diffie-Hellman problem and we used in our experiments its elliptic curve analog. Our findings basically indicate the feasibility of implementing our protocol in real sensor network devices and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each approach given the available technology and the corresponding efficiency (energy, time) criteria. ©2007 IEEE.

In reconfigurable systems, reconfiguration latency is a very important factor impact the system performance. In this paper, a framework is proposed that integrates the temporal partitioning and physical design phases to perform a static compilation process for reconfigurable computing systems. A temporal partitioning algorithm is proposed which attempts to decrease the time of reconfiguration on a partially reconfigurable hardware, This algorithm attempts to find similar single or pair of operations between subsequent partitions. Considering similar pairs instead of single nodes brings about less complexity for routing process. By using this technique, smaller reconfiguration bit-stream is obtained, which directly decreases the reconfiguration overhead time at the run-time. A complementary algorithm attempts to increase the similarity of subsequent partitions by searching for similar pairs and using a technique called dummy node insertion, An incremental physical design process based on similar configurations produced in the partitioning stage improves the metrics over iterations. © 2006 IEEE.

Security engineering deals with modeling, analysis, and implementation of complex security mechanisms. The dynamic nature of such mechanisms makes it difficult to anticipate undesirable emergent behavior. In this work, we propose an approach to develop and analyze security-critical specifications and implementations using aspect-oriented modeling. Since we focus on the dynamic views of a system, our work is complementary to existing approaches to security aspects mostly concerned with static views. Our approach includes a link to implementations in so far as the code which is constructed from the models can be analyzed automatically for satisfaction of the security requirements stated in the UML diagrams.
