As the usage of smart devices is increasing, malware affecting such devices is rapidly evolving as well. Security risks affecting the confidentiality, integrity, and privacy of smart devices are rapidly emerging. Mobile security suites exist to defend the device against malware and other intrusions. However, they require extensive resources which is a constraint of the device itself. In this paper, we address the problem of intrusion detection for smart devices taking into account the devices' limited resources such as energy, CPU usage, and internet connectivity. We provide an ad-hoc mobile cloud based intrusion detection framework that takes advantage of Wi-Fi Direct as means of achieving connectivity and sharing resources and services for providing security. The proposed framework allows exchange of data with or without the availability of internet connection. The paper also provides experiments, carried out using real devices, showing various improvements of using our approach. Up to 61% and 40% enhancement in energy consumption and response time respectively is reached compared to local execution. © 2016 IEEE.

Mixed basis quantum key distribution with linear optics

Two-qubit quantum codes have been suggested to obtain better efficiency and higher loss tolerance in quantum key distribution. Here, we propose a two-qubit quantum key distribution protocol based on a mixed basis consisting of two Bell states and two states from the computational basis. All states can be generated from a single entangled photon pair resource by using local operations on only one auxiliary photon. Compared to other schemes it is also possible to deterministically discriminate all states using linear optics. Additionally, our protocol can be implemented with today's technology. When discussing the security of our protocol we find a much improved resistance against certain attacks as compared to the standard BB84 *** Codes 81P94 Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Fredholm conditions on non-compact manifolds: Theory and examples

We give explicit Fredholm conditions for classes of pseudodifferential operators on suitable singular and non-compact spaces. In particular, we include a "user’s guide" to Fredholm conditions on particular classes of manifolds including asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, asymptotically Euclidean (or conic) manifolds, and manifolds with poly-cylindrical ends. The reader interested in applications should be able read right away the results related to those examples, beginning with Section 5. Our general, theoretical results are that an operator adapted to the geometry is Fredholm if, and only if, it is elliptic and all its limit operators, in a sense to be made precise, are invertible. Central to our theoretical results is the concept of a Fredholm groupoid, which is the class of groupoids for which this characterization of the Fredholm condition is valid. We use the notions of exhaustive and strictly spectral families of representations to obtain a general characterization of Fredholm groupoids. In particular, we introduce the class of the so-called groupoids with Exel’s property as the groupoids for which the regular representations are exhaustive. We show that the class of "stratified submersion groupoids" has Exel’s property, where stratified submersion groupoids are defined by glueing fibered pull-backs of bundles of Lie groups. We prove that a stratified submersion groupoid is Fredholm whenever its isotropy groups are amenable. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. The validation of wireless communications research, whether it is focused on PHY, MAC or higher layers, can be done in several ways, each with its limitations. Simulations tend to be simplified. Equipping wireless labs requires funding and time. Remotely accessible testbeds present a good option to validate research. The existing testbeds have gone a long way in building the infrastructure for managing and operating themselves. Yet, there is still space to improve the administration of resources whether it is nodes, frequency spectrum or storage space. In this work, we present the Collaborative Radio Cloud (CRC), a wireless testbed that enables web/remote access to facilitate research experiments in the field of wireless communications and networks. CRC is built upon the contributions made by current testbeds and incorporates new features to improve the user experience and ameliorate the management of resources. It enables multiple simultaneous users to coexist in the testbed by enforcing an elaborate node isolation policy. Software dedicated to the enforcement of spectrum assignment was developed to further ensure the isolation between concurrent users. A tool that is capable of realizing a desired topology using gain control was developed. CRC also operates a scheduler that optimizes node assignment to maximize testbed utilization. Enhancements to disk image saving are being developed to reduce the required storage. Other than research, CRC targets contributing to the education of wireless communications and networks by providing experiments and a web interface dedicated to students and instructors. © 2016 ACM.

Two-way relaying (TWR) has recently received a great deal of attention since it can recover the loss in spectral efficiency that characterizes conventional half-duplex transmission systems operating within cooperative networks. Additionally, when relay selection is considered in multiple relay network, outdated channel state information (CSI) due to feedback delays can create important challenges from a practical point of view. In this paper, we study the outage performance of an amplify-and-forward (AF)-based TWR system with multiple relays where a single relay selection is performed based on outdated CSI. Specifically, we consider a single relay selection scheme in AF-based TWR system under outdated CSI conditions and offer a statistical analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio per hop with the given policy. For the analysis of the outage probability with asymmetric outage thresholds, we offer an accurate closed-form approximation based on the provided statistical/joint statistical analyses of a dual-hop AF transmission. Finally, we verify our analytical results with some selected computer-based simulation results.

In life testing, the progressive Type-II censoring methodology allows for the possibility of censoring a number of survival units each time a failure is observed. This leads to a large number of possible censoring schemes. By specifying an optimality criterion, one may improve the outcome of the experiment by choosing the respective optimal scheme. In this paper an efficient computational method for computing the joint entropy in progressive Type-II censored data is derived. Employing maximum entropy as an optimality criterion, exact optimal schemes for some important lifetime distributions are determined.

This paper presents a system for controlling the sound spatialization of a live performance by means of the acoustic localization of the performer. Our proposal is to allow a performer to directly control the position of a sound played back through a spatialization system, by moving the sound produced by its own musical instrument. The proposed system is able to locate and track the position of a sounding object (e.g., voice, instrument, sounding mobile device) in a two-dimensional space with accuracy, by means of a microphone array. We consider an approach based on Generalized Cross-Correlation (GCC) and Phase Transform (PHAT) weighting for the Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA) estimation between the microphones. Besides, a Kalman filter is applied to smooth the time series of observed TDOAs, in order to obtain a more robust and accurate estimate of the position. To test the system control in real-world and to validate its usability, we developed a hardware/software prototype, composed by an array of three microphones and a Max/MSP external object for the sound localization task. We have got some preliminary successfully results with a human voice in real moderately reverberant and noisy environment and a binaural spatialization system for headphone listening. © 2011 Daniele Salvati et al.

We present a data integration and datamining platform, called BioGraph, for knowledge discovery in the biomedical domain. BioGraph allows for the automated formulation of comprehensible functional hypotheses relating a concepts to targets. A typical setting in which BioGraph can assist, is gene prioritization. That is, given the researcher's interest in a certain disease, predict those genes that are most likely of being involved in this disease. Our system is based on cutting-edge graph and network mining techniques, adapted to specific demands and properties of data and researchers in the Biomedical domain. The basis is constructed by the integration of heterogeneous biomedical knowledge bases. On this unified network BioGraph provides literature supported indirect functional relations. By assessing the plausibility and specificity of these hypothetical functional paths, the unsupervised methodology is capable of appraising and ranking of research targets, without requiring prior domain knowledge from the user. In this paper we show that the set of right K-Lipschitz mappings from an asymmetric normed linear space (X,p) to another asymmetric normed linear space (Y,q), which vanish at a fixed point x0 ∈ X can be endowed with the structure of an asymmetric normed cone. This provides an appropriate setting to characterize both the points of best approximation in asymmetric normed linear spaces. We also show that this space is bicomplete quasi-metric space. © 2011 IEEE.
