In recent years, the wood product industry has been facing a skilled labor shortage. The result is more frequent sudden failures, resulting in additional costs for these companies already operating in a very competitive market. Moreover, sawmills are challenging environments for machinery and sensors. Given that experienced machine operators may be able to diagnose defects or malfunctions, one possible way of assisting novice operators is through acoustic monitoring. As a step towards the automation of wood-processing equipment and decision support systems for machine operators, in this paper, we explore using a deep convolutional autoencoder for acoustic anomaly detection of wood planers on a new real-life dataset. Specifically, our convolutional autoencoder with skip connections (Skip-CAE) and our Skip-CAE transformer outperform the DCASE autoencoder baseline, one-class SVM, isolation forest and a published convolutional autoencoder architecture, respectively obtaining an area under the ROC curve of 0.846 and 0.875 on a dataset of real-factory planer sounds. Moreover, we show that adding skip connections and attention mechanism under the form of a transformer encoder-decoder helps to further improve the anomaly detection capabilities. © 2025 IEEE.

Designing and implementing cryptographic protocols is known to be difficult. A lot of research has been devoted to develop formal techniques to analyze abstract designs of cryptographic protocols. Less attention has been paid to the verification of implementation-relevant aspects of cryptographic protocols. This is an important challenge since it is non-trivial to securely implement secure designs, because a specification by its nature is more abstract than the corresponding implementation, and the additional information may introduce attacks not present on the design level. We propose an approach to determine security goals provided by a protocol implementation based on control flow graphs and automated theorem provers for first-order logic. More specifically, here we explain how to make use of assertions in the source code for a practical and efficient security analysis. Copyright 2005 ACM.

UMLsec: Extending UML for secure systems development

Developing secure-critical systems is difficult and there are many well-known examples of security weaknesses exploitedin practice. Thus a sound methodology supporting secure systems development is urgently needed. Our aim is to aid the difficult task of developing security-critical systems in an approach basedon the notation of the UnifiedModeling Language. We present the extension UMLsec of UML that allows to express security-relevant information within the diagrams in a system specification. UMLsec is defined in form of a UML profile using the standard UML extension mechanisms. In particular, the associatedconstraints give criteria to evaluate the security aspects of a system design, by referring to a formal semantics of a simplifiedfragment of UML. We demonstrate the concepts with examples. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

We give a formal semantics for one of the main UML diagram types for dynamical system behavior: statechart diagrams. This is the first semantics which explicitly models message-passing between different diagrams. It therefore lays a first foundation for executable UML modeling, allowing whole systems of UML specifications (rather than single diagrams) to be simulated.

In this invited presentation, we give an overview on a soundly based approach to Secure software engineering based on the UML extension UMLsec. More specifically, one main current focus is the automated, formally based analysis of software artefacts against security requirements. This is motivated by the observation that the current state of security engineering in practice is far from satisfactory. The goal is thus to start with the actual industrial engineering methods of security-critical software-based systems, to identify problems which are practically amenable to tool-supported, formally sound analysis methods, and to try to solve these problems using these methods. An important objective is to ensure that these analysis methods can actually be used in practice by keeping the additional overhead in using them bounded: First, they take as input artefacts which are already available in current industrial software development (such as UML models and program source code) and do not have to be constructed just to perform the analysis. Second, the tools should be reasonably easy to use and have a strong emphasis on automation. We also present results from some recent work on applying model-based security analysis to the analysis of economic aspects of securing critical infrastructures. Human resource is one of the most valuable assets in an organization. They are bounded to develop the unique and dynamic aspects that strengthen their competitive advantage to persist in an always changing market environment. In order to recruit a quality candidate for an organization, reducing human involvement and verifying details of the candidate is important in recruitment process. Furthermore, having an idea about how well or poor the employees perform, and how likely the employee attrition can occur is vital in human resource management process. This paper is an attempt to introduce smart human resource management system that can maximize the productivity of an organizational environment using machine learning and blockchain technologies. The end goal of this research is a smart human resource management system that reduces human judgment, time in the candidate selection process and predicts employee performance and attrition to motivate current employers to maximize productivity with minimal financial loss in the workplace environment. Skill assessment and resume classification have been done using unsupervised learning algorithms and natural language processing after extracting raw data from employee resumes using Object Character Recognition. Candidate details verification is done by comparing the hashes of the records which are stored in the blockchain. Employee performance and attrition are predicted using supervised machine learning classification techniques with high accuracy and the result of the final performance is generated as a score for each employee considering the multiple attributes that has been standardized and regulated by some specifically considered e-competence frameworks. © 2020 IEEE.

Security engineering deals with modeling, analysis, and implementation of complex security mechanisms. The dynamic nature of such mechanisms makes it difficult to anticipate undesirable emergent behavior. In this work, we propose an approach to develop and analyze security-critical specifications and implementations using aspect-oriented modeling. Since we focus on the dynamic views of a system, our work is complementary to existing approaches to security aspects mostly concerned with static views. Our approach includes a link to implementations in so far as the code which is constructed from the models can be analyzed automatically for satisfaction of the security requirements stated in the UML diagrams.
