The introduction of product quality self-regulation to food-cooking extrusion is an important aspect of process control within food manufacturing industries. In order to design an automatic control system for product quality, a mathematical model of the food extruder is required. As first-principles models are difficult to obtain in this context, a food extruder is a good candidate for applying system identification tools. This paper presents the application of continuous time system identification to such a food cooking extruder. More specifically, the reported application features an automated identification experiment apparatus designed using relay feedback control mechanisms and instrumented through existing real time supervisory system for the extruder. Experimental data from the food extruder are obtained and analysed using our identification approach.

This paper deals with parameter fault diagnosis in heat exchange networks (HENs) with joining and splitting connections where the change in the heat transfer coefficient is considered as fault. The fault diagnosis oriented model of the HEN elements was developed based on the equivalent LTI realization of distributed delay models. The Signed Directed Graph (SDG) method is used to derive the fault observability conditions. The presence of faults induces bilinear fault-input terms into the system model. Thus, a nonlinear adaptive observer was proposed for fault diagnosis. To verify and validate the proposed method, a case study is presented. The simulation results show that the observers are successfully detecting and estimating the faults and unknown system states.

Melanoma is a very dangerous skin cancer. In this paper we present results of experiments on three melanoma data sets. Two data mining tools were used, a new system called IRIM (Interesting Rule Induction Module) and well established LEM2 (Learning from Examples Module, version 2), both are components of the same data mining system LERS (Learning from Examples based on Rough Sets). Typically IRIM induces the strongest rules that are possible for a data set. IRIM does not need any preliminary discretization or preprocessing of missing attribute values. Though performance of IRIM and LEM2 is fully comparable, IRIM provides an additional opportunity to induce unexpected and strong rules supplying an important insight helpful for diagnosis of melanoma.

It is recognized that the semantic space of knowledge is a hierarchical concept network. This paper presents theories and algorithms of hierarchical concept classification by quantitative semantic relations via machine learning based on concept algebra. The equivalence between formal concepts are analyzed by an Algorithm of Concept Equivalence Analysis (ACEA), which quantitatively determines the semantic similarity of an arbitrary pair of formal concepts. This leads to the development of the Algorithm of Relational Semantic Classification (ARSC) for hierarchically classify any given concept in the semantic space of knowledge. Experiments applying Algorithms ACEA and ARSC on 20 formal concepts are successfully conducted, which encouragingly demonstrate the deep machine understanding of semantic relations and their quantitative weights beyond human perspectives on knowledge learning and natural language processing.

A sparse representation is an essential part of compressed sensing (CS). The discrete wavelet transform has been widely used to sparsely represent magnetic resonance images for CS applications. Artifacts usually exist in CS reconstruction when the wavelet transform is used alone. In this work, we investigate improving the image reconstruction quality through redundant translational-invariant sparsifying transforms. Cycle spinning is used with the wavelet transform and overlapping patches are used with the discrete cosine transform to achieve translational invariance. Experimental results show significant improvement in artifact reduction when contrasted with non-translational invariant transforms.

Unlike for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems, for nonlinear systems, there exists no general framework for systematic convex controller design which incorporates performance shaping. The Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) framework sought to bridge this gap by extending convex LTI synthesis results such that they could be applied to nonlinear systems. However, recent literature has shown that naive application of the LPV framework can fail to guarantee the desired asymptotic stability guarantees for nonlinear systems. Incremental dissipativity theory has been successfully used in the literature to overcome these issues for Continuous-Time (CT) systems. However, so far no solution has been proposed for output-feedback based incremental control for the Discrete-Time (DT) case. Using recent results on convex analysis of incremental dissipativity for DT nonlinear systems, in this paper, we propose a convex output-feedback controller synthesis method to ensure closed-loop incremental dissipativity of DT nonlinear systems via the LPV framework. The proposed method is applied on a simulation example, demonstrating improved stability and performance properties compared to a standard LPV controller design.

We present a framework for opacity in cyberphysical systems modeled as discrete time linear time invariant systems. A set of secret states is k-ISO with respect to a set of nonsecret states if, starting from these sets at time 0, the outputs at time k are indistinguishable to a passive adversarial observer. Necessary and sufficient conditions for k-ISO are given in terms of reachable sets of the system. Properties of k-ISO under unions and intersections are verified. It is seen that while unions of opaque sets preserve opacity, this is not necessarily true for intersections. We show that under certain conditions, k-ISO is equivalent to output controllability. Finally, we present an algorithm to compute a k-ISO set of states, given candidate secret and nonsecret sets of initial states.
