The gender gap in STEM is an issue that affects regions and countries worldwide. Furthermore, the percentage of women in these areas depends on a range of different factors. In particular, the gender gap is critical in technology in general and, more specifically, in informatics. This problem affects not only the business sector but also society. Informatics is part of our lives;however, 50% of the world population is not represented in the teams that are developing solutions for solving society's problems. In Spain, the number of women with informatics degrees is around 15%. This work describes a case study developed by the committee of Women in Informatics at the Scientific Society of Spanish Informatics (SCIE) to analyse the perception of informatics scientists on the gender gap in informatics. © 2022 IEEE.

Data collection is the most important task in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Each sensor node has to send the sensed data to a special node called sink, which is the user interface. The sensor nodes far from the sink send data to intermediate nodes that forward it by multi-hop data paths. This characteristic leads to higher energy consumption in the sensor nodes close to the sink since they have to relay data from all other sensor nodes. The literature presents several studies that use mobile sinks for data collection to reduce the number of hops in the data paths and distributes the energy consumption, considering that the nodes close to the mobile sink change. However, the majority of these studies consider only the network limitation, such as energy. Furthermore, they also consider sensor nodes sending only one data packet to the mobile sink. This work assumes a quad-copter drone as a mobile sink and sensor nodes having several data packets to send to the sink. We propose two GRASP-based heuristics to define drone tours for data collection. Since this vehicle has limited flight time, the primary metric analyzed here is the overall data collection time. Furthermore, they guarantee that the mobile sink will stay a minimal time inside the radio range of each sensor node to ensure that all of them will have enough time to send all data. Simulated experiments showed that the proposed GRASP-based heuristics outperformed the greed algorithm found as state of the art for this type of scenario, mainly when the volume of data stored in each sensor node is high. © 2022, The Authors. This paper presents an improved variation of Probabilistic Foam Method (PFM) for robot path planning. In PFM, a structure named probabilistic foam, formed by bubbles propagate through the free space from initial configuration to goal as a breadth-first search, obtaining a collision-free path. Although the method is able to obtain a navigable path, it is computationally expensive. We propose a new foam propagation approach inspired on random tree growth from RRT. Results from simulation experiments using 2D and 3D map show benefits with the new method.

In active orthoses for paraplegic users, it is essential that the devices replicate the user's leg movements. This is usually performed through joint position control, where each orthosis joint follows a specific angle trajectory as a reference. The most commonly used approach for generating this required references is to create a set of average joint trajectories from a gait database, and use them as a set of default references. Although recent approaches shown improvement, the influence of a user oriented gait trajectory to the orthosis general performance is still unknown. Nevertheless, due to the complexity of human gait system and individual body reaction when wearing an active lower limb orthosis, the efficacy and performance of such devices are still in current analysis. Taking the metabolic effort realized during gait and the electric power used by the motors in consideration, this work presents a performance comparison between different types of trajectories followed by the orthosis. The metabolic effort realized by the user will be obtained through the measurement of the heart beat rate. The experiments were realized in Ortholeg orthosis with a healthy subject. The main contribution of this work is to provide information regarding the influence of different gait types an active lower limb orthosis performance, allowing a better gait trajectory planning that can be used for daily walk or for rehabilitations programs. © 2015 IEEE.

Concerning the human factor and ergonomics in an active orthosis for lower limbs application, it is important to generate an anthropomorphic gait. The objective of this work is to find an anthropomorphic gait model using Principal Component Analysis able to be used in a real orthosis application. The gait was modeled from the perspective of the joint leg angles. In order to find a model close to the human gait behavior, gait experiments from humans were collected. The straight line slow walk was selected to be modeled because it fits the basic walk for an orthosis. The validity of the proposed model was verified through extrapolation and comparison with real human gait cycles, different from the ones used to build the model. © 2013 IEEE.

Energy plants represent large energy consumers with a wide array of energy needs, assets (e.g. boilers, chillers, storage, on-site generation), and constraints on operations. An innovative energy management system for energy plants is presented in this paper. Through predictive optimization of plant assets, energy analytics, pricing signals, and historical and realtime data, the online energy management system supplies energy plants with salient hourly, real-time recommendations and enables “what-if” analysis to achieve improved economic efficiency. Within a systems context, the paper draws upon ideas from power systems and highlights technical issues related to plant optimization. The paper also describes actual implementations of the energy management solution at two energy plants in the US, providing economic details and an analysis of the savings achieved.

Improving the use of energy resources has been a great challenge in the last years. A new complex scenario involving a decentralized bidirectional communication between energy suppliers, distribution system and consumption is nowadays becoming reality. Sometimes cited as the largest and most complex machine ever built, Electric Grids (EG) are been transformed into Smart Grids (SG). Hence, the load forecasting problem has become more difficulty and more autonomous load predictors are needed in this new conjecture. In this paper a novel method, so-called MSES, bio-inspired by Evolution Strategies (ES) combined with Multi-Start (MS) procedure is described. This procedure is mainly based on a self-adaptive algorithm to calibrate the parameters of the fuzzy rules. MSES was implemented in C++ via OptFrame framework. Our main goal is to evaluate the performance of this algorithm in a grid environment. Real data from an electric utility have been used in order to test the proposed methodology. The obtained results are fully described and analyzed.
