This paper studies the design and dynamic modelling of a novel thermal energy storage (TES) system combined with a refrigeration system based on phase change materials (PCM). Cold-energy production supported by TES systems is a very appealing field of research, since it allows flexible cold-energy management, combining demand fulfilment with cost reduction strategies. The paper proposes and compares two different simulation models for a cold-energy storage system based on PCM. First, a continuous model is developed, the application of which is limited to decoupled charging/discharging operations. Given such conditions, it is a relatively precise model, useful for the tuning of the TES parameters. The second proposed model is a discrete one, which, despite implementing a discrete approximation of the system behaviour, allows to study more general conditions, such as series of partial charging/discharging operations. Simulation results of both models are compared regarding decoupled charging/discharging operations, and the ability of the discrete model to represent more realistic partial operations is analysed. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Pneumonia is one of the top causes of death in Romania and early detection of this disease improves the recovery chances and shortens the length of hospitalization. In this work, we develop a solution for automatic pneumonia detection based on convolutional neural networks. Four network models are investigated. They are trained on 4.163 images from a public dataset and tested on 530 images. The best results are obtained by one of the proposed models conducting to a sensitivity of 98.72%, an accuracy of 89.81%, and ROC 93.46%. Thus, this research proposes a lightweight screening tool that can help triaging the patients with pneumonia.

Two new modifications of second-order low-frequency discrete-analog filters (DAFs) based on switched capacitors with two electronic keys have been developed and investigated. The first modification contains a resistive signal adder based on a buffer amplifier, in the second modification the signal adder is implemented on a differential difference operational amplifier. The basic formulas for the transmission coefficient at zero frequency and pole frequency, and also a frequency and attenuation of the pole are given. The transmission coefficient of new circuits in the passband does not depend on the capacitances of the frequency-setting capacitors. computer modeling was performed in the Micro-Cap environment, which confirms the coincidence of the calculated main parameters of the DAF and their time characteristics. The developed DAFs were studied at various input signal frequencies, which differ by several orders of magnitude, including the low, medium and high frequency ranges. It is shown that the graph of the DAF output signal has a 'step' character, which corresponds to the physical processes of signal conversion in filters of the class under consideration. The low parametric sensitivity of presented DAF circuits is achieved by the fact that the pole attenuation and transmission coefficient of such DAFs cease to depend on the parameters of the tuning elements. © 2024 IEEE.

SightAid: empowering the visually impaired in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with deep learning-based intelligent wearable vision system

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visual impairment poses significant challenges for approximately 17.5% of school-aged children, mainly due to refractive errors. These challenges extend to everyday navigation, environmental interaction, and overall life quality. Motivated by the desire to empower visually impaired individuals, who face navigational limitations, difficulties in object recognition, and inadequate assistance from traditional technologies, we propose SightAid. This innovative wearable vision system utilizes a deep learning-based framework, addressing the gaps left by current assistive solutions. Traditional methods, such as canes and GPS devices, often fail to meet the nuanced and dynamic needs of the visually impaired, especially in accurately identifying objects, understanding complex environments, and providing essential real-time feedback for independent navigation. SightAid comprises a seven-phase framework involving data collection, preprocessing, and training of a sophisticated deep neural network with multiple convolutional and fully connected layers. This system is integrated into smart glasses with augmented reality displays, enabling real-time object detection and recognition. Interaction with users is facilitated through audio or haptic feedback, informing them about the location and type of objects detected. A continuous learning mechanism, incorporating user feedback and new data, ensures the system's ongoing refinement and adaptability. For performance assessment, we utilized the MNIST dataset, and an Indoor Objects Detection dataset tailored for the visually impaired, featuring images of everyday objects crucial for safe indoor navigation. SightAid demonstrates remarkable performance with accuracy up to 0.9874, recall values between 0.98 and 0.99, F1-scores ranging from 0.98 to 0.99, and AUC-ROC values reaching as high as 0.9999. Real-Time Intrusion Detection Based on Decision Fusion in Industrial control systems

Industrial control systems (ICSs) are becoming increasingly interconnected as the rapid convergence of information technology (IT) and operation technology (OT) networks, and meanwhile massive attack surfaces have been exposed. However, traditional intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are difficult to be directly deployed in ICSs due to the hard real-time requirement and rare patching chance. Besides, the design of effective and practical IDSs is hampered by the lack of benchmarking ICS cybersecurity datasets. To bridge the gaps, this paper makes the first attempt by open-sourcing the developed ICS cybersecurity datasets and proposing a decision fusion based real-time IDS. Firstly, we design a customized cybersecurity dataset in a full-hardware and high-fidelity platform, including 7 types of cyber threats tailored for ICSs. The collected dataset includes network traffic, sensor readings, actuator status, and system parameters, providing the state-of-the-art benchmark dataset for ICSs consisting of cross-layer characteristics. Furthermore, we design an online decision fusion-based IDS by strategically integrating 4 widely-used machine learning models. The proposed IDS is deployed on a real-time running ethanol distillation, surpassing the performance of single detection models in terms of precision and F1-score, which substantially enhances intrusion detection accuracy and cybersecurity of ICS. © 2023 IEEE.

Continuous-time (CT) modeling has proven to provide improved sample efficiency and interpretability in learning the dynamical behavior of physical systems compared to discrete-time (DT) models. However, even with numerous recent developments, the CT nonlinear state-space (NL-SS) model identification problem remains to be solved in full, considering common experimental aspects such as the presence of external inputs, measurement noise, latent states, and general robustness. This paper presents a novel estimation method that addresses all these aspects and that can obtain state-of-the-art results on multiple benchmarks with compact fully connected neural networks capturing the CT dynamics. The proposed estimation method called the subspace encoder approach (SUBNET) ascertains these results by efficiently approximating the complete simulation loss by evaluating short simulations on subsections of the data, by using an encoder function to estimate the initial state for each subsection and a novel state-derivative normalization to ensure stability and good numerical conditioning of the training process. We prove that the use of subsections increases cost function smoothness together with the necessary requirements for the existence of the encoder function and we show that the proposed state-derivative normalization is essential for reliable estimation of CT NL-SS models. © 2023 11th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2023. Laplacian dynamics on signed digraphs have a richer behavior than those on nonnegative digraphs. In particular, for the so-called 'repelling' signed Laplacians, the marginal stability property (needed to achieve consensus) is not guaranteed a priori and, even when it holds, it does not automatically lead to consensus, as these signed Laplacians may lose rank even in strongly connected digraphs. Furthermore, in the time-varying case, instability can occur even when switching in a family of systems each of which corresponds to a marginally stable signed Laplacian with the correct corank. In this article, we present novel conditions for achieving consensus on signed digraphs based on the property of eventual positivity, a Perron-Frobenius (PF) type of property for signed matrices. The conditions we develop cover both time-invariant and time-varying cases. A particularly simple sufficient condition, valid in both cases, is that the Laplacians are normal matrices. Such condition can be relaxed in several ways. For instance, in the time-invariant case it is enough that the Laplacian has this PF property on the right side, but not on the left side (i.e., on the transpose). For the time-varying case, convergence to consensus can be guaranteed by the existence of a common Lyapunov function for all the signed Laplacians. All conditions can be easily extended to bipartite consensus. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we develop an uncertainty-aware decision-making and motion-planning method for an autonomous ego vehicle in forced merging scenarios, considering the motion uncertainty of surrounding vehicles. The method dynamically captures the uncertainty of surrounding vehicles by online estimation of their acceleration bounds, enabling a reactive but rapid understanding of the uncertainty characteristics of the surrounding vehicles. By leveraging these estimated bounds, a non-conservative forward occupancy of surrounding vehicles is predicted over a horizon, which is incorporated in both the decision-making process and the motion-planning strategy, to enhance the resilience and safety of the planned reference trajectory. The method successfully fulfills the tasks in challenging forced merging scenarios, and the properties are illustrated by comparison with several alternative approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

Point Cloud Classification Using Content-Based Transformer via Clustering in Feature Space

Recently, there have been some attempts of Transformer in 3D point cloud classification. In order to reduce computations, most existing methods focus on local spatial attention,but ignore their content and fail to establish relationships between distant but relevant points. To overcome the limitation of local spatial attention, we propose a point content-based Transformer architecture, called PointConT for short. It exploits the locality of points in the feature space(content-based), which clusters the sampled points with similar features into the same class and computes the self-attention within each class, thus enabling an effective trade-off between capturing long-range dependencies and computational complexity. We further introduce an inception feature aggregator for point cloud classification, which uses parallel structures to aggregate high-frequency and low-frequency information in each branch separately. Extensive experiments show that our PointConT model achieves a remarkable performance on point cloud shape classification. Especially, our method exhibits 90.3% Top-1 accuracy on the hardest setting of ScanObjectN N. Source code of this paper is available at https://***/yahuiliu99/PointC onT.
