In this paper, we propose an economic model predictive control algorithm which ensures satisfaction of transient average constraints, i.e., constraints on input and state variables averaged over some finite time period. Compared to asymptotic average constraints, this stricter form might be of independent interest in various applications such as the operation of a chemical reactor, where e.g. the amount of inflow during each one hour period must not exceed a certain value. We show that compared to asymptotic average constraints, a different constraint formulation within the optimization problem solved at each time instant is needed, but that certain results such as closed-loop average performance and convergence established for the former setting can be transferred to the case of transient average constraints.

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we discuss necessity of a dissipativity condition which was recently used to prove optimal operation of a system at steady-state in an economic MPC framework. We illustrate with several examples that this dissipativity condition is not necessary, but comes close to being so in a certain sense. Second, we provide a Lyapunov-like stability analysis for averagely constrained economic model predictive control. This closes a gap which was left open in a recent paper on economic MPC.

In this paper, a new interpolation based control is developed for constrained control of switched linear discrete-time systems. The interpolation is done between a global gain-scheduled vertex controller and a local gain-scheduled stabilizing controller in order to achieve both the large domain of attraction and performance. At each time instant a linear programming problem is solved on-line. Proofs of recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability are given.

In this paper we consider the problem of searching for an arbitrarily smart and fast evader in a large environment with a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) while providing guarantees of detection. Our emphasis is on the fast execution of efficient search strategies that minimize the number of UAVs and the search time. We present the first approach for computing fast guaranteed search strategies utilizing additional searchers to speed up the execution time and thereby enabling large scale UAV search. In order to scale to very large environments when using UAVs one would either have to overcome the energy limitations of UAVs or pay the cost of utilizing additional UAVs to speed up the search. Our approach is based on coordinating UAVs on sweep lines, covered by the UAV sensors, that move simultaneously through an environment. We present some simulation results that show a significant reduction in execution time when using multiple UAVs and a demonstration of a real system with three *** 2.0.

The current research represents a first step towards developing a flexible, decentralized network of small and inexpensive, battery powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which could be used for a variety of scientific missions where measurements from a distributed network of nodes could significantly improve the assessment (e.g. chemical or dust clouds, mapping particulates, chemical content and physical boundaries of a dispersed volcanic plume or vog). Individual UAVs are equipped with on board sensing equipment as well as autopilot and networking nodes for communication between each UAV and the ground station and between UAVs to relaying the data between individual UAVs when lack of direct line of sight prevents communication. The UAVs are built using off the shelf components, which allows rapid replacement of damaged items and lowers significantly the overall price (less than $500 for each instrumented UAV), resulting in a practically disposable fleet of UAVs. In the current paper we use a pair of UAVs and a hardware in the loop computer simulation to test the feasibility of the proposed concept. Each UAV is instrumented with GPS, humidity, temperature and particle sensors as well as XBee network communication links.

The paper deals with the coordination of dynamical systems by distributed model predictive *** consider a set-up in which the subsystems dynamics are decoupled, while the subsystems outputs are coupled by some constraint. Starting from a well established non-iterative and non-cooperative architecture, we provide a novel interpretation for this non-cooperative scheme as a simplicial approximation of a convex program. Thanks to this novel interpretation, we are able to show why the existing algorithm, while guaranteeing feasibility, fails to compute an optimal solution to the centralized problem. Furthermore, by exploiting the simplicial approximation structure, we are able to propose a novel algorithm. The proposed algorithm inherits all the properties of the existing one, namely little communication, and feasibility. Furthermore, increasing the communication among the subsystems between two control updates improves the performance of the algorithm, regaining in the limit optimality in a cooperative sense.

This paper proposes a novel receding horizon based controller for LPV discrete-time systems. The main idea exploited in the proposed algorithm is to use a parameter-dependent Lyapunov function together with an interpolation based control approach. At each time instant, the solution is obtained by means of a quadratic programming algorithm. Proofs of recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability are given.
