An expansion procedure to design partially decentralized controllers via model predictive control is proposed in this paper. Partially decentralized control is a control structure that lies between a fully decentralized structure and a fully centralized one, and has the advantage of achieving comparable performance as a fully centralized controller but with simpler structure. The proposed method follows the expansion method proposed in a previous paper where internal model control (IMC) was used to design controllers for non-square subsystems. The method requires computing the pseudo-inverse of a non-square matrix via pseudo-inverse factors. Instead, the proposed method uses dynamic matrix control (DMC) to design PID controllers for non-square subsystems without using additional factors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on several chemical examples. Simulation results show that the proposed method is simple and can achieve better performance.

The use of remote laboratories has become a common technique in universities to provide educational services related to engineering. However, the development efforts of these laboratories have not been contemplated in a structured way, with no specific methodologies that allow the reuse of such laboratories or parts thereof. This problem of structured and methodological development is associated with a number of disadvantages which imply that the development of new labs or their integration with other services is a complex task. This paper shows how this goal can be achieved using RELATED (REmote LAboratories exTendED). It is shown the development model proposed by this methodology, as well as the services provided by this development framework. The article shows an example of application of this methodology, using a magnetic levitation system, which is prepared for “on-site” experiences. From this laboratory, and following specific methodological steps, is shown as is possible to reuse developed code and provide a set of remote experiments for the magnetic levitation system.

To accommodate increasing product specialization, modern factories are increasingly becoming more flexible. Much of this flexibility is achieved by integrating the components of the manufacturing system (e.g., design, production, purchasing, etc). To be successful in this new manufacturing environment, an engineering college graduate must understand the total business process from design to production to delivery in order to develop a holistic view of manufacturing systems. Yet, traditional pedagogical tools are ill-equipped to develop this holistic view in students. In this paper, we describe a Virtual Factory Teaching System, VFTS, now under development to provide a tool to illustrate the concepts of factory management and design in a realistic setting. The focus of this paper is to present our pedagogical approach of the VFTS, the development of the prototype, and its use in a senior-level industrial engineering class.

This paper evaluates the possibility of applying a geno-fuzzy control strategy to a magnetorheological semi-active damper for seismic vibration control. The proposed control strategy is designed and then tested and validated in a simulated environment. The control strategy is validated by considering a more destructive seismic disturbance as input for the damper-structure system. The proposed geno-fuzzy hybrid controller offers improved performance and implementability for real-time applications.

Solutions of the output regulation problem in a nonlinear setting invariably target systems presented under some “normal form”. This paper reviews a recently introduced such form for MIMO nonlinear systems and discusses consequent necessary conditions for solving the MIMO nonlinear output regulation problem. As opposed to the (by now classic) form based on the notion of vector relative degree that is only specific to some square invertible MIMO nonlinear systems, the recent form applies to general (not necessarily invertible, nor square) systems. It turns out that, as far as output regulation goes, the recent form fits better some assumptions that have already been used in the context of square invertible systems and, more important, that can still be used (thanks to this particular normal form) in the context of not square ones.
