There is a worldwide interest in the use of renewable resources for the generation of electrical power. Between all renewable energy sources, ocean energy is the one that still has the furthest to go to achieve commercial maturity. As the most promising ocean energy that can be harnessed in the Basque Country is wave energy, the NEREIDA MOWC project, promoted and led by Basque Energy Board, aims to prove the viability of this technology for future commercial plants. In this paper, an Oscillating Water Column-based wave power generation plant is modeled and controlled by means of a new control scheme that takes into account the influence of turbine damping and the main requirements imposed by new Grid Codes when a grid fault occurs on the transmission system.

A novel design of two-wheeled double inverted pendulum-like vehicle with a movable payload is presented in this paper. The developed design extends the abilities of the vehicle with five degrees of freedom. The increase of degrees of freedom provides the vehicle with more flexibility in maneuvering in narrow spaces and limited travel distances. The dynamic model of the system is derived using Euler-Lagrange approach and simulated in Matlab Simulink environment. A hybrid fuzzy logic control approach is adopted to control and stabilise the vehicle. Various external disturbances are applied to the system to test the robustness of the control approach. It is demonstrated that the proposed controller successfully stabilises the vehicle in the upright position.

FIR (finite impulse response) model is widely used in tackling the problem of the impulse response estimation with quantized measurements. Its use is, however, limited, in the case when a high order FIR model is required to capture a slowly decaying impulse response. This is because the high variance for high order FIR models would override the low bias and thus lead to large MSE (mean square error). In this contribution, we apply the recently introduced regularized FIR model approach to the problem of the impulse response estimation with binary measurements. We show by Monte Carlo simulations that the proposed approach can yield both better accuracy and better robustness than a recently introduced FIR model based approach.

A significant difficulty associated with achieving high scan speeds in scanning probe microscopes is that the probe is required to scan the sample in a zig-zag (raster) pattern. The fast axis of the scanner is required to track a non-smooth signal that contains frequency components beyond its mechanical bandwidth. Therefore, fast raster scans lead to distortions in the obtained image. This paper proposes analysis and design methods for a nonlinear but smooth scan pattern, known as Lissajous pattern, which enables us to achieve high-quality images at very high scan speeds where raster scanning typically leads to significant image distortions. Criteria are also proposed and formulated for constructing Lissajous trajectory and calculating the parameters and resolution. Together with the implementation of an internal model controller for high precision tracking, the proposed method is successfully employed to scan images in high speeds using a low resonance frequency SPM platform of only 825 Hz.

An approach for a leak detection and localization scheme is presented. With respect to developing methods for diagnosis in commercial vehicles, applicability of existing approaches for leak diagnosis in pipelines has been evaluated. A leakage localization strategy using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in combination with the Method of Characteristics (MOC) is adapted to pneumatic systems and implemented in Matlab/Simulink. To deal with boundary limitations due to possible sections for leak localization along the pipe, a methodical extension based on the idea of virtual pipes is proposed and integrated into the overall method. Verifications, resulting from a simulation model as well as from measurements at a real test bench, are presented. The promising results are discussed and suggestions for possible steps of further development are given.

We propose a framework that allows to study hybrid systems with delays through generalized concepts of solutions. Such generalized solutions have proved to be suitable for the analysis and design of hybrid controlsystems. Extending these concepts to systems with delays is motivated by control applications where hybrid feedback control laws play an important role but delays are often inevitable. Our first step characterizes a suitable phase space that is equipped with a suitable notion of convergence. The space of hybrid memory arcs under graphical convergence is considered. Regularity conditions on the hybrid data are then formulated in terms of the graphical topology. The new formulation enables two basic results regarding existence and well-posedness of solutions being established.

This paper focuses on a novel type of two wheeled robotic system. The system poses a challenging control problem in terms of combining upright balance, stability and maneuverability. The system is designed with the ability to move on irregular terrains such as frictional and inclined surfaces. The work investigates the dynamic modeling and control of the two-wheeled robotic machine moving on an inclined surface. This paper presents the dynamic modeling of the proposed system using the Lagrange approach. The model is built in Matlab Simulink environment and its controllability tested with a Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control mechanism.

This short paper presents a preliminary analysis of the impact of model parameter uncertainty on the accuracy of solution algorithms for the scheduling problems with the learning effect. We consider the maximum completion time minimization flowshop problem with job processing times described by the power functions dependent on the number of processed jobs. To solve the considered scheduling problem we propose heuristic (NEH based) and metaheuristic (simulated annealing) algorithms. The numerical experiments show that NEH and simulated annealing are robust for this problem with respect to model parameter uncertainty.

This paper deals with a ball and plate experiment and the objective is twofold. In the first part, a solution to the identification problem for this multi-input multi-output system is provided. In the second part an improved vertex control technique, recently proposed in literature (Nguyen et al. [2011b], Nguyen et al. [2011a]), is applied for stabilizing the ball and plate system. Based on an interpolation technique, feasibility and an asymptotically stable closed loop behavior are guaranteed.
