When identifying a dynamic system the model order has to be determined unless it is a priori known. For an errors-in-variables situation where both input and output measurements are noise corrupted, this is a nontrivial task, seldom treated in the literature. For a freeway traffic system with strict repeatable pattern, iterative learning control (ILC) has been successfully applied to local ramp metering for a macroscopic freeway environment by formulating the original ramp metering problem as an output tracking, disturbance rejection, and error compensation problem. In this paper, we address the freeway traffic ramp-metering system under a nonstrict repeatable pattern. ILC-based ramp metering and ILC add-on to ALINEA strategies are modified to deal with the presence of iteration-dependent parameters, iteration-dependent desired trajectory, and input constraints. Theoretical analysis and extensive simulations are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

In this article the problem of characterizing sets, described by vector nonlinear inequalities of the form v(x) ≤ w, as robustly positively invariant and targets of uniformly ultimate bounded nonlinear systems is investigated. The class of general parameter uncertain continuous-time dynamical systems affected by exogenous disturbances is considered. The approach is based on establishing an associated monotone nonlinear comparison system. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the approach.

This paper describes the processing of photographs in the newly created module for 2D modeling, which will be integrated into the system FOTOM NG . This is a usable application in medicine to analyze images of probes and non-invasive examination developed at the department of computer science of the technical university of Ostrava. The module will be his purpose and functionality to build on a previous version of module Fotom2 of system FOTOM, but will be expanded to meet the requirements of a modern system. The module will be implemented on the NetBeans Platform. In the paper we describe the 2D modeling, analyzing the existing software requirements specifications for the new module, selecting software tools, and the subsequent design and implementation.

This paper describes an approach for modeling smart grids for wide area control applications. More specifically, it is proposed to model smart grids as a set of interdependent composite networks. A composite network is one whose evolution in time and/or space is described as a composition of more than one category of networks. This work proposes an interconnection of a communication network, information network, and a power system network to model smart grids. More specifically this work proposes a quantitative model focusing on bulk generation and transmission. The resulting model will be used for studying and simulating wide area measurement and control techniques and contingencies of components. The modeling methodology is based on the initial partitioning by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the smart grid domains. A basic example with control of load (demand response) and generator set points over a communication link is presented.

Measurement of Internet Protocol Packet Delay Variation (IPDV) is a relevant issue in application involving real time video streaming. Generally, this quantity is compared with predefined thresholds (whose value depends upon the application requirements) to verify the quality of service to the end user. However, the exceeding of this threshold only for short time intervals and with relatively low repetition rates, generally does not imply a significant decrease of the user perceived quality. Vice-versa, IPDV values not exceeding the admitted threshold but very close to this value for long time intervals and characterized by relatively high repetition rates can significantly affect the user perceived quality. Consequently, a study of the correlation among the measured IPDV values and some performance metrics directly related to the quality perceived by the user has to be accurately investigated. On the other hand, literature concerning with IPDV evaluation does not provide some important information about the measurement procedure, such as measurement rate, how to collect the obtained result in a single estimator, the time interval on which the estimator is evaluated, and so on. Consequently, the absence of these important aspects about the measurement procedure makes very critical the comparison between the evaluated IPDV and the above-mentioned thresholds, thus making even more ambiguous the evaluation of the quality of service to the end user. In this framework, the aim of the paper is to design and fine tune an IPDV estimator able to reliably estimate and detect the objective service degradation from the user perspective.
