There is growing interest in plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). Charging EVs from smart microgrids fueled by renewable energy resources is becoming a popular green approach. Although some works have been done about renewable energy sources and EVs in smart microgrids, the stochastic characteristics and the dynamic interplay between these two important green solutions should be carefully considered. In this paper, we study the charging policies in smart microgrids with EVs and renewable energy sources. Based on the renewable energy sources states, battery states, and the number of charging EVs, an optimal charging policy is obtained to maximize the energy utilization with service availability constraints. We formulate the optimal charging problem as a stochastic decision process. Simulation results are presented to show that the proposed scheme can improve the service availability for EVs in microgrids fueled by renewable energy sources.

The implementation of automated regulatory control has been around since the middle of the last century through analog means. It has allowed engineers to operate the plant more consistently by focusing on overall operations and settings instead of individual monitoring of local instruments (inside and outside of a control room). A similar approach is proposed for cyber security, where current border-protection designs have been inherited from information technology developments that lack consideration of the high-reliability, high consequence nature of industrial controlsystems. Instead of an independent development, however, an integrated approach is taken to develop a holistic understanding of performance. This performance takes shape inside a multi-agent design, which provides a notional context to model highly decentralized and complex industrial process controlsystems, the nervous system of critical infrastructure. The resulting strategy will provide a framework for researching solutions to security and unrecognized interdependency concerns with industrial controlsystems.

TopHat is a fast splice junction mapper for Next Generation Sequencing analysis, a technology for functional genomic research. Next Generation Sequencing technology allows more accurate analysis increasing data to elaborate, this opens to new challenges in terms of development of tools and computational infrastructures. We present a solution that cover aspects both software and hardware, the first one, after a reverse engineering phase, provides an improvement of algorithm of TopHat making it parallelizable, the second aspect is an implementation of an hybrid infrastructure: grid and virtual grid computing. Moreover the system allows to have a multi sample environment and is able to process automatically totally transparent to user.

We propose a new game theoretic approach to estimate a binary random variable based on a vector of sensor measurements that may be corrupted by an adversary. The problem is formulated as a zero-sum partial information game in which a detector attempts to minimize the probability of error and an attacker attempts to maximize this probability. Explicit mixed policies are computed using the matrix form of the game and exploiting sensor symmetry to reduce complexity and find closed-form solutions.

The output-feedback design problem for a bilateral teleoperator scheme is considered. The recently proposed Immersion and Invariance (I&I) observer is used to obtain an exponentially convergent estimate of the unmeasured velocities. Moreover, it is proven that when this observer is interconnected to the nonlinear teleoperator together with a Proportional plus damping (P+d) controller, the overall system is globally stable. Finally, in the case when the human operator and the environment do not exert forces on the local and remote manipulator, respectively, global asymptotic convergence to zero of the velocities and of the position tracking error is achieved. These results are obtained by introducing two important design modifications ensuring the explicit derivation of the observer dynamics and that the interconnected system inherits the same stability properties as in the full-measurement case. The theoretical results are illustrated with simulations using local and remote two degree-of-freedom nonlinear manipulators.

For several decades Proportional-Integral-Derivative control (PID) has been successfully used for a wide variety of industrial processes and remains the most used method. Recent work concerning the tuning of PID control coefficients has been proven to provide both robust and near-optimal performance using a Frequency Loop Shaping (FLS) procedure. The FLS tuning method minimizes the difference between the actual and the desired target loop transfer function. Such a control design procedure is ideal for problems in which the desired closed loop frequency response is predetermined over a specific frequency band. This paper explores the possibilities and trade-offs of applying the FLS control strategy in Active Noise control (ANC) problems. The use of the FLS design is ideal for the problem of noise suppression in ducts, because the required acoustic impedance for the elimination of reflecting sound waves in the one-dimensional case is well defined. Hence, by controlling locally the reflecting boundary structure, a global cancelation of the undesired noise can be accomplished.

This paper presents a dual layer approach for robust fault tolerant estimation of nonlinear processes using a combined adaptive extended Kalman filter and fault detection and filter reconfiguration. From the one hand, the filter is made robust in face of environment uncertainty using adaptive filtering. To this end, the filter identifies the measurement covariance by means of recursive estimation, upon which the adaptation relies, to suppress the effect of sporadic variations in the quality of measurements as well as compensates for incipient sensor faults. From the other hand, fault monitoring is continuously applied to the filter's innovation in an attempt to initiate filter reconfiguration when the adaptation mechanism alone is not able to overcome the failure situation. The discussion of the results is embedded in the application framework of state estimation of a batch distillation process.

The problem of maintaining connectivity in a mobile communication network is considered. The agents consist of two classes: one class of agents, which is termed primary mission agents, performs surveillance operations that may or may not be coordinated efforts. The second class of agents, which is termed relay agents, is controlled to maintain the connectivity. Two control algorithms are proposed to retain the connectivity of the network. Sliding mode observers are employed to predict the trajectories of the primary mission agents, when only their positions are known from blue force messages, and this information is used to construct state dependent graphs encapsulating the measure of connectivity. An optimal model predictive control is employed to develop the control policies for the relay agents to maximize connectivity. Also, the hybrid system approach is used to retain the connectivity of the communication network. The efficacy of the proposed control algorithms is confirmed on a case study of Riverine detection and interdiction operation.
