Adaptive nonlinear filtering methods are preferred in situations when it is necessary to adapt a filter behavior for varying signal and noise statistics. In the case of impulsive noise corruption, the problem is stated often as searching for the switching function that allows the filtering effect only to noisy samples. Thus, the undesired smoothing of non-corrupted image areas, which results in blurring, especially of small image structures and details, is reduced. We provide a new adaptive framework between a basic vector directional filter and an identity operation based on the angular multichannel definition of J.S. Lee's sigma filter (see Comp Vision, Graphics, Image Proc., vol.24, no.2, p.255-69, 1983).

In this paper a new method of impulsive noise reduction in microarray images is presented. The new technique is capable of attenuating impulsive noise, while preserving the sharpness of the image edges. Extensive simulations reveal that the new method outperforms significantly the standard techniques widely used in multivariate signal processing. In this work we apply the new noise reduction method for the enhancement of the images of the microarray chips. We demonstrate that the new technique is capable of reducing impulsive noise, which is very often present in the microarray images and that it enables efficient spot localization and estimation of the gene expression level, due to the smoothing effect and preservation of the spot edges. This paper contains the comparison of the efficiency of the new technique of noise reduction with the standard procedures used for the processing of vector valued images, as well as examples of the efficiency of the new algorithm when applied to typical microarray images.

Bit errors and impulses introduced into cardiographic image sequences prohibit to process and evaluate the heart dynamics correctly. Thus, biomedical imaging such as vascular imaging and quantification of heart dynamics is closely related to digital filtering. We provide three-dimensional impulse detection based adaptive median filters designed to perform the optimal filtering situation, where the robust median filter affects only noisy samples, whereas the desired image features remains unchanged. The proposed method holds excellent preserving characteristics and takes the advantage of the superposition property despite the nonlinearity of the median filtering.

The paper presents a method for the determination of the capacitance matrix needed in modelling and simulation of signal transmission in multiple coupled interconnecting lines. The method utilises capacitance measurements and thus one of its useful application areas is in the validation of numerous previously published algorithms based on various approximations to field equations, originally developed for the computation of capacitance matrices. The technique described is based on the active separation of the capacitance network, achieved through the use of a unity-gain amplifier. Thanks to the circuit configurations introduced with a unity-gain amplifier it is possible to make direct capacitance measurements in the multiconductor interconnecting structures. Measurement procedures are described and analysis of errors in measured quantities caused by the imperfections of measuring equipment is discussed. A sample of results obtained in measuring manufactured test structures is included for illustration of the method and measuring procedures.

In this paper we discuss the suitability of standard discrete-time control models for the analysis and design of control loops implemented over networked control systems. In fact, depending on the specific control loop topology, different control approaches may apply. We distinguish between control approaches that offer synchronous and asynchronous actuation. Through simulation results we show that the performance of control loops closed over communication networks can be improved using approaches that support asynchronous actuation. This leads us to conclude that there is a need for more control approaches relying on the asynchronous actuation paradigm.

The use of virtual industrial devices, i.e., software components in the form of objects, for representing real industrial devices is a widely accepted approach when modelling industrial plants. Object-oriented middleware integration technologies are usually used as communication backbones to support the communication services that virtual industrial devices require. However, such middleware technologies restrict the communication capabilities of these virtual industrial devices (restricting its accessibility) because they rely on specific communication protocols. In this paper we present a peer-to-peer communication protocol that enabling the simple object access protocol with a new routing service allows communication between virtual industrial devices regardless the communication technology that supports the actual messaging.
